Laid off from PwC.
PwC went fifteen years without a formal layoff, then ran four US reductions between September 2024 and February 2026. The firm put the May 2025 round down to historically low attrition over consecutive years, and the two rounds that followed hit back-office and support work.

PwC cut about 600 support roles in February 2026
PwC's US arm let go of about 600 executive assistants, recruiters and other support staff in February 2026, with affected workers reported to have received four to six weeks of severance. Bloomberg tied the cuts in part to greater automation and AI adoption at the firm; PwC hasn't confirmed a count.

PwC layoff history
PwC's business model used to make layoffs unnecessary. Consulting and accounting run on churn, with enough people leaving voluntarily every year that a hiring slowdown shrinks the firm quietly. Then turnover fell and stayed down. The late 2024 cut of about 1,800 roles was the first formal U.S. layoff since 2009, apart from a 2017 restructuring that led to some departures, and when about 1,500 more roles went in May 2025 the firm said the quiet part directly, that historically low levels of attrition over consecutive years had made the step necessary.
Where you sat changed what the rounds felt like. The 2024 cut reached from associates to managing directors, with business services, audit and tax taking the brunt, and nearly half of it was expected to land on offshore roles rather than US ones. By May 2025 the cutting had moved into audit and tax, where many of the people let go had joined only months earlier, some of them up for promotion instead. Several learned through time-sensitive Microsoft Teams calendar invitations. PwC had spent months on internal analysis first and had already moved hundreds of people out of unneeded roles into higher-growth units, which is worth knowing if you were offered an internal move and turned it down.
After that the cutting moved away from client work and the firm changed its explanation. About 150 marketing, human resources and other US support roles went in early November 2025, which PwC put at 1.5% of its business services staff and called part of a longer-term effort modernizing and simplifying its back office, including through the use of new artificial intelligence tools. About 600 executive assistants, recruiters and other support staff followed in February 2026, a figure Bloomberg reported and PwC hasn't confirmed. The direction shows up in the firm's own numbers too. PwC's annual review for the year ended June 30, 2025 put the network at 364,782 people, down 5,600 across the year, against a 2021 pledge from then global chair Bob Moritz to hire 100,000 people by the middle of 2026.
Severance is where the record thins out. PwC published no terms for the 2024 or 2025 rounds, and there are no terms on record from the firm for either one. The one range reporting carried came with the February 2026 support-staff cut, where affected workers were described as receiving four to six weeks. Some of those same people were later contacted about returning, and one former employee wrote that severance received during the layoff period would have to be paid back if they accepted, an account posted by a worker rather than anything PwC has stated. Read your own separation agreement and whatever plan or policy documents it points to, and if a return offer reaches you, get the repayment question answered in writing before you say yes.
Our WARN tracker holds nothing for PwC, none in our tracker across every state archive we carry. That silence is about what got filed, not about how many people lost work, and it takes away the public paper trail most laid-off workers start with. So start with what you hold instead. Pull the separation agreement and the release, write down your last day and the date you were told, and check your state's own WARN list yourself. Your state unemployment agency sets the rules for how severance affects when you can file and what you receive, so take the timing question there rather than to a firm-wide answer that doesn't exist.

How PwC's layoffs compare to other companies
The Big 4 historically shrank by attrition, people leave fast in normal times. PwC attributed its May 2025 round to historically low levels of attrition over consecutive years, and its later cuts came with a different explanation from the firm, modernizing and simplifying back-office work.
What to do after being laid off from PwC
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. PwC's biggest hubs: New York, Florida, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what PwC's hub states run: New York, Florida, Texas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
PwC layoff and severance questions
Why did PwC start doing layoffs after fifteen years without them?
The Big 4 model assumes steady voluntary turnover, enough people leaving each year that a firm can shrink without cutting. Reporting called the late 2024 round PwC US's first formal layoffs since 2009, apart from a 2017 restructuring that led to some departures. PwC gave its own reason with the May 2025 round, saying historically low levels of attrition over consecutive years had made the step necessary. It gave a different reason for what came next, describing the November 2025 back-office cut as part of modernizing and simplifying that unit.
What severance does PwC pay?
PwC has published no terms, and there are no terms on record from the firm for its 2024 or 2025 rounds. Reporting on the February 2026 support-staff cut carried one range, four to six weeks. Treat that as one round's reported figure rather than a firm policy, and read your own separation agreement along with any plan or policy documents it points to before you sign.
Did PwC lay off anyone in 2026?
Yes. In February 2026 PwC's US arm let go of about 600 executive assistants, recruiters and other support staff, a number Bloomberg reported and the firm hasn't confirmed. Separately, PwC's UK audit business ran targeted voluntary exits in July 2026 for senior associates and managers, and a spokesperson said there had been a small number of targeted voluntary exits in areas where natural turnover had been low.
How many people has PwC laid off in the US?
Adding up what the record holds, about 1,800 roles in late 2024, about 1,500 in May 2025, about 150 in November 2025 and about 600 in February 2026. Those are announced or reported role counts rather than confirmed separations, and they describe PwC's US firm rather than US-based staff alone, since nearly half of the 2024 round was expected to fall on offshore roles.
Are there PwC WARN notices I can look up?
None in our tracker. We hold no PwC filings at all, in any state, for any year our archives cover. An empty tracker is a statement about what got filed and nothing more, so check your own state's WARN list directly and lean on your notice paperwork rather than on the absence.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from PwC?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. PwC's biggest U.S. hubs are New York, Florida, Texas. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at PwC?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at PwC?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from PwC?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
