Laid off from Riot Games.
Some Riot Games layoffs have followed a single game, shrinking or closing the team behind a title its makers said wasn't working. Others reached across the company, and in January 2024 the biggest impact fell on teams outside core development.

The most recent Riot Games layoff we've found
Riot said in an August 20, 2026 post that 2XKO's active development would end after a final bug fix patch in December, having weighed options that included a smaller team. It doesn't say what that means for the people on the game's team.
What Riot Games layoffs have meant for employees
Riot's own posts on its January 2024 cuts and the February 2026 2XKO cut pointed to bets that weren't working out. Dylan Jadeja's January 2024 letter said Riot had doubled in size after big bets made since 2019, that some investments weren't paying off and that costs had grown unsustainable. It said Legends of Runeterra hadn't performed as well as Riot needed and that Riot Forge wasn't core to its strategy, while calling Riot as committed as ever to League PC, VALORANT, TFT and Wild Rift. That commitment didn't keep every team whole. In October 2024, League of Legends developers were among those let go, though co-founder Marc Merrill said the cut wasn't "about reducing headcount to save money" and that the team would eventually grow, according to Game Developer. In February 2026, Tom Cannon's 2XKO post said that game's momentum couldn't support a team its size long term.
Two details in the 2024 terms change how far the money goes. The six months of salary included the notice period rather than sitting on top of it, while the 2XKO post in 2026 put its six-month minimum in different terms, as notice pay and severance. If a package you're offered is quoted in months, whether those months count your notice period is worth checking, as the 2024 ones did. Health coverage ran through each covered person's last day where Riot provides it, and the letter offered extra pay for medical, dental and vision equal to the severance period, rounded up to a full month. If a package includes money for health coverage and yours ends on your last day, earmarking it for whatever coverage comes next is worth considering. The 2024 cash bonus was set at 100% of each person's 2023 target, even for people who'd joined within the year.
In 2024 the package was offered to people whose roles were going away "and who aren't moving into new positions," in the letter's words, so that year a new job inside Riot and the package didn't come together. The 2026 post was worded differently, pairing help exploring other Riot roles where possible with notice pay and severance where that wasn't possible. If an internal role comes up while your job is ending, what accepting or declining it would mean for any severance is worth weighing, since the 2024 terms tied the package to not moving.
Leaving Riot in 2024 also came with practical help. Riot kept email open for a limited time after notification, varying by region, so people could untangle personal accounts tied to their work address, and anyone without a computer at home could request a laptop from IT. The package added $1,000, or the local equivalent, for costs the Play Fund and Wellness Fund would have covered, and job placement services ran for six months, the Rioter Assistance Program for three. If you're given a stretch of email access after notice, as people were in 2024, moving anything personal off your Riot address early is worth doing, and the same goes for any equity records you'd want after you go.
In 2024 the cut reached senior staff and offices around the world alike. California's notice, as SFGATE described it, covered recruiters, engineers and designers, esports workers and more than 20 senior managers, and the letter said that while US meetings would finish within the week, elsewhere they could take several weeks as Riot followed local laws. Riot also said it had dedicated support for people whose visas were tied to their Riot jobs, including help moving to non-employment visas where possible, with its Global Mobility team and outside immigration consultants reaching out to each person. If you work for Riot outside the US, planning for a longer process than the US one is reasonable, since that's how the 2024 round ran.

What to do if you're laid off from Riot Games
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Riot Games's biggest hubs: California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Riot Games's hub states run: California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Riot Games layoff and severance questions
What severance has Riot Games given laid-off employees?
Where a figure is on record, Riot's packages started at six months. Its January 2024 letter set a minimum of six months of salary, including notice, with more for longer tenure; Game Developer reported a six-month minimum in October 2024; and the 2XKO post committed to a minimum of six months of notice pay and severance for people Riot couldn't place in other roles.
What happens to my Riot Games stock if I'm laid off?
In January 2024, Riot said departing Rioters could keep shares they'd received from vesting single-vesting RSUs, "subject to their terms and conditions," and that it intended to let them join any future buyback, according to its letter to Rioters. Holders of dual-vesting equity who had met the "service-based vesting component" at exit could vest if a qualifying liquidity event, like a change-in-control transaction, came within 12 months.
How many WARN notices has Riot Games filed?
Four, all from California, are in our WARN tracker. Two dated January 22, 2024 list 330 and 6 jobs, which SFGATE reported as 336 California layoffs, and two dated February 9 and 24, 2026 list 56 and 26, effective April 10 and 27. The cuts the Jacob Wolf Report and Game Developer reported in January 2023 and October 2024 left no row there.
