Post-R2-launch cuts in the drive to profitability

In June 2026, a week after R2 deliveries began, Rivian cut hundreds of roles, under 2% of staff, concentrated in service and customer teams, following the October 2025 round of more than 600, about 4.5% that landed weeks after the $7,500 federal EV credit was eliminated.

Rivian layoff history

If you worked in marketing, sales, delivery, or service at Rivian, you worked in the part of the company that has absorbed nearly every round since 2022. The July 2022 cut of about 6%, roughly 840 people, and the second 6% in February 2023 both spared manufacturing at the Normal, Illinois plant by name, and February 2024 took 10% of salaried staff along with some non-manufacturing hourly roles. The one round that ran the other way was June 2025, when about 140 salaried manufacturing jobs went in what Rivian tied to operational efficiency for R2.

2025 held three rounds in five months. After June came September, when about 200 people went, which Rivian put at roughly 1.5% of a staff of nearly 15,000 and described as changes to its Commercial team. Then October took more than 600, about 4.5%, restructuring marketing, vehicle operations, and the sales, delivery and mobile operations teams, and the company said no manufacturing operations employees were affected by it. Our WARN filing tracker holds 34 filings for Rivian all time, and 33 of them are California notices from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 waves. Since the start of 2025 it holds 1 filing covering 19 jobs, at a Maryland showroom.

Severance is on record for two of the seven rounds, and neither set came from a company announcement. The 2022 terms were reported at the time of that round, 14 weeks of regular pay, continued health coverage with Rivian-paid COBRA, job placement help, and that quarter's equity vesting. For October 2025, Business Insider read internal documents and reported terms that scaled by grade, up to 10 weeks at grades 1 through 4, seven weeks plus four weeks per year of service at grades 8 and 9 for a reported total of 22, and up to 28 weeks for vice presidents. That round also carried 60 days of paid administrative leave through 23 December 2025, with the leave pay subtracted from the final severance and unvested stock forfeited after that date. For the other five rounds there are no terms on record.

The annual reports count something the round announcements don't. Rivian ended 2024 with 14,861 employees and ended 2025 with 15,232, both counts including its consolidated joint venture. That arithmetic leaves 371 more people at the end of a year that held three separate rounds of cuts. The filings don't explain the change and neither one breaks the joint venture out, so the net says nothing about any individual team. Alongside it sits Illinois, where the governor's office said in May 2026 that Rivian was "rapidly hiring employees to support production of the R2", against a 2024 commitment of more than 550 full-time jobs at Normal.

Rivian tells investors it has made several reductions in force as part of its cost work, which is the company describing the pattern in its own words. If you're on your way out of one of these rounds, the paperwork worth reading closely is what the October terms turned on. Check whether your notice period is being paid as administrative leave and whether that pay is subtracted from your severance total, because in that round it was. Check the date your unvested stock stops vesting. Then check what your own agreement says rather than what any round reportedly paid, because the agreement you actually signed is what controls. Rivian's cuts have run through California and Illinois, and the one filing since the start of 2025 sits in Maryland. The state pages here carry the filing records and the benefits rules for all three.

How Rivian's layoffs compare to other companies

Cutting the week after your most important product launch reads backwards until you see the logic, the launch spending is done, the sales machine is built, and profitability math starts the moment the vehicle ships.

What to do after being laid off from Rivian

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Rivian's biggest hubs: California, Illinois, Maryland. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Rivian's hub states run: California, Illinois, Maryland, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Rivian layoff and severance questions

What severance does Rivian pay?

There's no standing package on record, and terms have surfaced for only two of the seven rounds. In 2022, reporting listed 14 weeks of regular pay with Rivian-paid COBRA, job placement help, and that quarter's equity vesting. For the October 2025 round, Business Insider read internal documents describing severance that scaled by grade, from up to 10 weeks at the lowest grades to 28 weeks for vice presidents, with 60 days of paid administrative leave counted against the total. Your own agreement controls, so get the terms in writing and check how your state treats severance before you file.

Why did Rivian cut jobs right after the R2 launch?

Rivian said it had restructured a handful of teams as it works to profitably scale the business. The cut landed on service and customer teams including sales and marketing, a week after R2 deliveries began. It followed the October 2025 round, which came weeks after the federal EV credit ended. Beyond the company's own words, the record doesn't establish a more specific reason for the timing.

Did Rivian's layoffs hit the Normal, Illinois plant?

Mostly they haven't, and Rivian has said so by name. The 2022 and 2023 rounds both spared manufacturing operations at Normal, and the company said no manufacturing operations employees were affected by the October 2025 round. June 2025 ran the other way, when about 140 salaried manufacturing roles went as the plant was tightened before R2. Assembly work has been the most protected job at Rivian, and the go-to-market and service teams around it have taken the reductions.

How many Rivian layoffs show up in WARN filings?

Our tracker holds 34 filings for Rivian all time, and 33 of them are California notices from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 rounds. Since the start of 2025 it holds 1 filing covering 19 jobs, at a showroom in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The tracker counts what the state archives publish, so it's a record of filings rather than a count of everyone who lost a job.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Rivian?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Rivian's biggest U.S. hubs are California, Illinois, Maryland. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Rivian?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Rivian?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Rivian?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
