The most recent Rocket Companies layoff we've found
Rocket's newest move came in March 2026, when it began offering buyouts to some employees, saying the integration of Mr. Cooper and Redfin had turned up overlapping responsibilities, according to The Detroit News. It wouldn't say how many people got an offer or which teams.
What Rocket Companies layoffs have meant for employees
A buyout and a layoff ask different things of you. In 2022, the year of two buyout rounds, Rocket's staff fell by about 30% by HousingWire's account, and Rocket Central, which provides human resources services for all of Rocket's companies, described the 2023 round as a voluntary career transition opportunity for several teams. If an offer reaches your team, saying yes or no is your call in a way a layoff doesn't allow, and the pieces worth comparing are the pay formula and the benefits that continue, which Rocket's 2023 offer spelled out, along with how long those benefits would last.
After buying Redfin and Mr. Cooper, Rocket described its cuts as a matter of overlap, roles and responsibilities it had found doubled up in the combined company, in an October 2025 statement National Mortgage News quoted and a March 2026 one reported by The Detroit News. It also made those reductions in stages, voluntary ones included, rather than in one announced round. Finance chief Brian Brown had forecast $30 million in severance and transaction costs for the quarter ending in September 2025, and he put the cuts Rocket made in July 2025, together with its exits from Rocket Mortgage Canada and its credit card business, at about $80 million in annualized savings. Chief executive Varun Krishna said on the fourth-quarter 2025 call, as the same Detroit News report noted, that Redfin had generated $140 million in cost savings in less than six months and that savings from Mr. Cooper were expected sooner than a previous 2027 timeline. If your team's work overlaps with work done elsewhere in the combined company, that overlap is the reason Rocket has given for these cuts.
Long service has counted for a lot in Rocket's recent packages. The 2023 offer scaled pay to tenure, as HousingWire reported that year, and under the 2025 layoff terms Rocket described to HousingWire, a ten-year employee would have received 22 weeks of severance pay, almost twice the 12-week base. Posts from people cut after the Redfin deal named recruiting, product management and software engineering roles, and some came from employees with more than a decade at the company. Each year of service moved the 2025 number by a week, so if you're weighing an offer, it's worth having your exact start date at hand.
Two parts of these packages run on clocks of their own. Rocket said the people cut after its two 2025 deals would keep benefits for up to a year, alongside career coaching and job search help, and the 2023 buyout sped up vesting on certain stock awards. If a package continues your coverage for a fixed stretch, putting its end month on a calendar early is worth the minute it takes, and continuation coverage in general is explained in how COBRA works. If an offer arrives close to when a bonus or a stock award comes due, how the offer handles it belongs in the comparison too.
Rocket calls itself Detroit-based in its quarterly report, while the four WARN filings by its companies since 2025, as our tracker records them, were all in California. For a job that ended in California, California unemployment benefits is where that state's rules are laid out, and Michigan unemployment benefits sets out Michigan's for anyone whose job was based in Detroit. Redfin came to Rocket as a Seattle-based brokerage and Mr. Cooper as a servicer headquartered in Coppell, Texas, as the same 10-Q's acquisitions note puts it, so for a job at either base, Washington unemployment benefits or Texas unemployment benefits has that state's version.

What to do if you're laid off from Rocket Companies
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Rocket Companies's biggest hubs: Michigan, California, Texas, Washington. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Rocket Companies's hub states run: Michigan, California, Texas, Washington, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

What severance has Rocket Companies given laid-off employees?
Rocket said the people it laid off after each 2025 deal were given 12 weeks of severance pay and one more week per year of service, according to HousingWire and National Mortgage News. Its 2026 buyout plan put the full 2025 bonus on top of tenure-based severance, The Detroit News reported. If a buyout reaches you, the 2025 formula at your own years of service is a concrete figure to set beside it, and negotiating severance goes into how people compare and counter a package.
Why has Rocket Companies been cutting jobs?
The August 2022 buyouts came as the mortgage market deteriorated, by HousingWire's account, and Rocket described its 2023 offer as a way to align resources with the needs of its business and the mortgage market. Redfin had already laid off 46 employees of its own earlier in 2025, as HousingWire noted, before the deal closed.
