Laid off from Sharp HealthCare.

Sharp HealthCare's 2026 cuts and realignment reached clinical jobs that its 2025 round mostly left alone. A TV report named nurses and social workers among the positions impacted, while the earlier round sat largely in nonclinical areas. Sharp said many of those affected in 2026 were offered other jobs.

What Sharp HealthCare layoffs have meant for employees

Sharp HealthCare's announcements use several words for what happened to people, and they aren't interchangeable. Sharp's June 2025 statement covered eliminated positions along with reductions in hours and role adjustments for some positions, so a person could be touched by that round without being part of its headline number. The August 2026 wording was reductions and realignment, with many of those impacted offered alternative employment, per FOX 5. If you're trying to place yourself in either round, a lost job, fewer hours, a changed role and an offer of other work are different outcomes, and a count of people affected can't tell you which one applied to whom. Sharp's chief operating officer called workforce reductions "always our last choice" in that first statement, and the system came back to them the next summer.

On the state's list, the 2026 round's heaviest concentration is at a psychiatric hospital. California's August notices put most of their jobs under Sharp Mesa Vista's name, and Sharp leadership said, per FOX 5, that it was adjusting staffing to address behavioral health and align with state requirements. Sharp Mesa Vista had told the state it took an average of 67 days the year before to hire a registered nurse, KPBS reported in February 2026, as California pushed new staffing rules for acute psychiatric hospitals to June 1.

Sharp's explanation barely moved between rounds. The 2025 statement named labor costs, state-mandated seismic work and inadequate reimbursement from Medicare, Medi-Cal and commercial payers. In 2026 the FOX 5 report had Sharp pointing to labor costs again, plus supplies, federal policy including the One Big Beautiful Bill and underfunded state mandates, while News 8 singled out cuts to federal reimbursement programs like Medicaid and Medicare. Sharp's fact sheet gives systemwide financial context in its own series, a $68.4 million loss from operations for the first 11 months of fiscal 2025 after $24.9 million in income in 2024, figures that leave out one-time stimulus and grants. It also says Sharp treats about 35% of the region's Medi-Cal population and that Medi-Cal covers less than 70% of the cost of care. Those figures are context, and they don't explain why particular departments or workers were selected.

The dates on California's reports are the firmest thing a worker can hold against these announcements. In both rounds the effective date fell about two months after the notice, going by California's 2025-26 report and the August notices, and in 2025 that date was also the line between regular pay and severance, by a Sharp spokesperson's account to 10News. One laid-off employee with more than 26 years there told the station it came without notice. That's one person's account, and it can sit beside the state's dates, which mark the effective date and not the day someone hears. If you got an August 2026 notice, it's worth checking whether your pay also runs to the listed date, since the spokesperson's line covered only the 2025 group.

Union coverage is the other thing a Sharp worker can pin down. As of September 30, 2024, 52.2% of employees were represented by unions, Sharp's audited statements say, with the Sharp Professional Nurses Network and SEIU-UHW the two large groups, and those statements gave November 2027 as the end of the SEIU contract. Neither the 2025 statement nor the August 2026 stories sort the cuts by bargaining unit, so if you're represented, a union rep can walk you through how a round applied to your unit.

Alternative employment is the part of the 2026 round that could change a next move. If you're weighing a role Sharp has offered, it's worth knowing whether saying no affects any severance, and whether the new role's pay and schedule match the old one, because the 2025 package language was written for a different round. If you're out of work either way, California unemployment benefits are the next stop, and any new Sharp filing lands on our WARN tracker.

Sharp HealthCare layoff and severance questions

What severance has Sharp HealthCare given laid-off employees?

For the June 2025 round, Sharp's release named career transition support, severance packages and extended health care coverage, and a spokesperson told 10News staff would be employed and paid as usual until Sept. 2, with severance after that. Neither gives an amount or a formula, and the August 2026 stories from FOX 5 and News 8 don't mention severance.

How many employees has Sharp HealthCare laid off?

Sharp's June 2025 release announced the elimination of 315 employees, and in August 2026 FOX 5 reported 260 affected, while News 8 said about one percent of 21,000 were being let go. California's reports show different counts, 394 jobs for 2025 and 168 jobs for 2026. Those are different counts, and they don't match in either year.

Did Sharp HealthCare lay off nurses in 2026?

Nurses were among the positions News 8 reported as impacted in August 2026, but the report doesn't separate layoffs from other changes or give a count for nurses. Sharp's own wording, per FOX 5, was "reductions and realignment," and the same report has the Sharp Professional Nurses Network noting ongoing staffing retention issues for nurses.

Were there layoffs at Sharp Mesa Vista?

Yes. California's WARN report lists 134 jobs under Sharp Mesa Vista on an August 11, 2026 notice, marked as a permanent layoff. A housekeeper there told News 8 her entire department was being let go, which is one employee's account.

Did Sharp HealthCare file WARN notices?

California's 2025-26 report lists notices dated June 30, 2025, effective Sept. 2, and EDD's current workbook lists more dated August 11, 2026, which together make up the 562 jobs on our WARN tracker since the start of 2025. An older 2023 closure notice carrying only the name Sharp sits outside that total, and only the address ties it to Sharp Home Care, which a 2016 state report lists at 8080 Dagget Street.
