Stryker layoff history

Working at Stryker's Lakeland, Florida plant has meant watching a closure arrive in installments. The site is a Stryker Sustainability Solutions operation where used devices are decontaminated and cleaned, disassembled, dried, reassembled, performance tested and packaged for return shipment. Stryker told Florida in October 2021 it would close by the end of 2023 and eliminate 523 jobs, and the newest supplemental letter, dated May 6, 2026, set two more roles to end July 10, 2026, with about 269 positions eliminated since December 2021.

The closure date keeps moving. The first letter said the end of 2023, the February 2025 letter said December 31, 2026, and the February 2026 letter moved it to mid-2027, where May left it. With the target already moved twice, weigh any separation date you're given against that history before deciding whether to stay for it or leave sooner.

That history also explains a number that looks bigger than the cut behind it. Our WARN tracker counts 24 all-time Stryker filings, with 3 filings covering 524 jobs since the start of 2025, and 500 of those jobs sit on one row, Florida's entry for the February 12, 2025 notice. That 500 is the program total the letter repeats in its opening paragraph. The letter's new cut was eight positions ending April 15, 2025, mostly production associates, alongside 11 already announced for March 9.

The letters repeat one line about terms, that there are no bumping rights and no affected employees are represented by a union. Bumping rights let a laid-off senior employee stay on in a less-senior worker's role, so seniority here gives no claim to a junior colleague's job. No severance terms appear in the letters or in the reporting we track. Stryker's 2022 promise to support impacted employees throughout the closure process came without specifics. Earlier rounds don't bind yours. Treat the paperwork you're handed as the only record of your package, and get anything promised out loud written into it before you sign.

Stryker says it sends these letters to fulfill its obligations under the federal WARN Act. Where the act covers a job loss, notice is owed 60 days out, and a worker who got less may be able to seek up to 60 days of back pay and benefits. Stryker also said it would move these operations to other Stryker locations, which makes the transfer rule worth knowing. An offer tied to that move, made before the closing and within reasonable commuting distance, counts as no employment loss whether you take it or not; a farther one has to be accepted within 30 days or it counts as a loss. If an offer comes, get the site, start date and deadline in writing.

Florida's Reemployment Assistance covers people out of work through no fault of their own, and the Reconnect application asks for 18 months of employer history, including the FEIN on your W-2. After filing you request benefits every two weeks, log weekly job contacts and register with Employ Florida unless exempt. Training help can start before your last day. CareerSource Polk, which runs a Lakeland office, opens WIOA services to people holding a layoff notice, subject to eligibility and an assessment, with up to $10,000 in tuition help for approved training and priority for fields such as advanced manufacturing and health sciences. Get the program approved before you enroll, or the board won't weigh it for funding.

How Stryker's layoffs compare to other companies

Most numbers on this page come from Stryker's own letters to Florida, which rarely go past dates and job titles, and the reporting we track holds just two company statements to the press about layoffs, from 2017 and 2022. Against a workforce Stryker puts at about 56,000 people in 61 countries, a closure run in installments is easy to miss.

What to do after being laid off from Stryker

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Stryker's biggest hubs: Florida, Michigan. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Stryker's hub states run: Florida, Michigan, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Stryker layoff and severance questions

Is Stryker closing its Lakeland, Florida plant?

Stryker's letters to the state describe one. The October 2021 notice aimed for the end of 2023, later letters moved the date to December 31, 2026, and the 2026 letters put it at mid-2027. By May 2026 Stryker counted about 269 positions eliminated and about 195 to go. In 2022 it said the work was moving to other Stryker locations, without naming them.

Did Stryker lay off 500 people in Florida in 2025?

No single 2025 notice cut 500. Florida lists Stryker's February 12, 2025 notice at 500 jobs because the letter restates the size of the whole Lakeland program. The letter itself set 8 positions to end April 15, 2025, alongside 11 already announced for March 9, after about 243 Lakeland positions had gone since December 2021.

Did Stryker have layoffs in 2026?

Yes, in small numbers at Lakeland. A February 2026 letter set 11 roles, mostly assemblers and cleaners, to end April 15, and a May letter set two more to end July 10. Our tracker's 2026 count is 1 filing covering 2 jobs, from May. Nothing in the reporting we track puts a 2026 Stryker round anywhere else.

Does Stryker pay severance when it lays people off?

No severance terms appear in Stryker's Lakeland letters or in the reporting we track; the letters stop at job titles, dates, bumping rights and union status. Stryker's public commitments were narrower, support for impacted employees through the Lakeland closure (2022) and the chance for people cut in Kalamazoo County to apply for other Stryker jobs (2017). Neither round sets terms for the next, so any package you're offered lives in the document you're asked to sign.

Where can Lakeland workers get retraining help after a Stryker layoff?

CareerSource Polk, which runs a Lakeland office, offers WIOA career and training services to people who are unemployed or hold a layoff notice, subject to eligibility and an assessment. Approved training can carry up to $10,000 in tuition help, but the program needs the board's approval before you enroll. Priority sectors include advanced manufacturing and health sciences.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Stryker?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Stryker's biggest U.S. hubs are Florida, Michigan. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Stryker?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Stryker?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Stryker?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
