Laid off from Sunrun.

Sunrun's job losses on record include its 2016 exit from Nevada, where it ended all operations and blamed new rules from the state's utility regulators. In 2025 it scaled back its Colorado operations and kept a maintenance team there.

What Sunrun layoffs have meant for employees

If you're trying to find your own job in Sunrun's record, the state notices carry the detail. California's EDD report gives each Sunrun notice a date, an effective date, a count of employees, a layoff or closure label and a street address, and Arizona’s WARN list names each of Sunrun's June 2023 notices by its site, three Phoenix streets and one Mesa listing, along with the ARIZONA@WORK area it falls under, City of Phoenix for the three Phoenix sites and Maricopa County for Mesa. More than once in 2023 Sunrun filed several notices for one county on the same day, including two Fresno addresses in August and three San Diego County sites in November, so a street address is a surer match for your site than a city or a county. Those 2023 notices went to California, Arizona and Florida, and the January 2025 layoffs centered on Colorado. If your Sunrun job was in one of those four states, the unemployment claim process for each is laid out state by state, for California, Arizona, Florida and Colorado.

Sunrun's 2020 cuts fell particularly on retail sales, its first-quarter 2020 10-Q said, as the company moved toward a more digital sales model. That filing reported furlough benefits and severance as one combined cost of $2.2 million for the quarter, so the figure doesn't reveal an individual severance amount. Sunrun's April 2020 release said its labor-related cost actions struck an appropriate balance that considered the welfare of its employees. If Sunrun furloughs you rather than ending your job, a written end date for any benefits it continues gives you something firm to plan around.

Who counts as Sunrun's own staff matters when you look for a layoff in the record. Sunrun's year-end headcounts include its active direct-to-home salesforce among its full-time employees, and the company also engages independent contractors and consultants, its fiscal 2025 10-K says. Its energy system partners are independent contractors in legal terms, by the same filing, and its installation partners, which install a subset of its energy systems, are solely its subcontractors. When Sunrun left Nevada in 2016, it said it expected the local installation companies it partnered with there to lay off workers or close. If your paycheck came from one of those outside firms, that firm's name is the one to look for on a state WARN list.

As of that 10-K, none of Sunrun's employees were covered by collective bargaining agreements, so a layoff at that point had no bargained seniority order or severance scale to follow. The severance plan Sunrun filed in 2018, its key employee severance plan, was written for a select group the company designates, and it replaces any earlier Sunrun severance plan, policy or practice only for those employees. If you weren't designated under it, or never signed and returned a participation agreement, its terms don't reach you.

Sunrun's Nevada exit included a stated hope for the people in it. Sunrun hoped, its January 2016 release said, to move Nevada-based employees into other positions within the company where possible, or to place them with local organizations. When Sunrun scaled back in Colorado in 2025, BusinessDen reported that a maintenance team would stay in the state, and the same report carried a sales representative's account that Sunrun would take on no new projects there. If Sunrun pulls back where you work and offers you a move, the new location, the role and the pay are each worth weighing on their own, apart from what turning it down would mean for any severance.
