Laid off from Supernal.

Supernal explained its 2025 layoffs as a move from developing technology to developing a product. Within months that aircraft program was on hold and its CEO and CTO were gone. When most of the company was cut in 2026, the explanation had changed to a strategic pivot.

What we know about Supernal severance and layoffs

  • 296 jobs on Supernal's February 27, 2026 California notices, about 80% of staff
  • 53 jobs on Supernal's June 30, 2025 California notices, about 8% of its workforce
  • 70 to 80 people kept in Irvine after the February 2026 layoffs
  • 60 days from the February 27 notice date to the April 28 effective date

The most recent Supernal layoff we've found

In May 2026 Farhan Gandhi assumed the chief technology officer role at Supernal, the Orange County Business Journal reported, and a Hyundai Motor Group release announced a memorandum of understanding for Supernal and Korea Aerospace Industries to jointly develop an aircraft.

What Supernal layoffs have meant for employees

If you left in June 2025, the explanation pointed forward. Officials told the state the cuts were made "to align with long-term strategic goals," per the Orange County Business Journal. On August 31 the CEO and CTO stepped down, and by September 8 AeroTime was reporting that Supernal had suspended development of its aircraft while it reviewed progress "to ensure alignment with our long-term goals." Those are nearly the same words for two very different moves. The cuts were tied to a step into product development, AIN reported, and the pause stopped that development. The order is worth having straight if you're telling an interviewer why you left. A June 2025 exit came before the pause and a February 2026 exit came after it, and explaining a layoff gets simpler when the company's own dates carry part of the story.

The February dates deserve a closer look, because they don't say the same thing. The layoffs took place on Feb. 27, the Business Journal says, and that's the notice date in California's WARN report, but the same lines give April 28 as the effective date, 60 days on. The June 2025 lines in the report for the year before carry a single date, June 30, as both notice and effective date. None of these sources says how long anyone stayed on the payroll in either round. That makes the real end date more than a detail, since California's Labor Commissioner's Office says a discharged employee must be paid all wages, including accrued vacation, immediately at the time of termination. If you were on a February notice, it's worth lining up the last day on your paperwork, your final check and any vacation payout against April 28.

Site by site, the picture is less tidy than a single move to Irvine. The company said operations would be consolidated at its Irvine headquarters, the Los Angeles Times reported, while Patch, citing The Air Current, described Supernal shutting down or scaling back work in Mojave, in Fremont and at its former D.C. facilities. Irvine, where operations were consolidating, still took 234 of February's jobs across its two addresses. California's report sorts closures from layoffs, and every Supernal line in both rounds is typed a permanent layoff. If you worked in Fremont or Mojave, that label can't tell you what became of your building, but it does show the state logged those lines as permanent, not temporary. The pull toward Irvine started before any of these notices. In December 2024, as it shifted its global headquarters from Washington, D.C. to Irvine, Supernal told TechCrunch it was asking about 5% of its workforce, roughly 35 to 40 people, to relocate to California, and its CEO said the D.C. office would remain a hub for policy and regulatory efforts.

The totals need the same care, because notices count only the jobs they list. Our WARN tracker shows 349 jobs across the two rounds, and Supernal's own February count matches California's five lines to the job. The company shrank by more than that. It stood at around 700 people in December 2024, by TechCrunch's count, and at 613 in August 2025 on the Business Journal's annual list, yet February's cut plus the people kept comes to fewer than 400. Those figures come from different sources, so the drop of more than 200 between those last two counts is a rough one, and neither the state's reports nor the Business Journal says how those people left.

Supernal's own description of itself since then is of a much smaller company. By May it had a core team of experts in Irvine working on a next-generation concept, the Orange County Business Journal reported, and was "evaluating multiple partnership opportunities." Every address on both rounds' notices is in California, so California's unemployment rules are a sensible place to start for anyone who worked at those sites.

Supernal layoff and severance questions

What severance has Supernal given laid-off employees?

Neither round's severance amount or formula is on record in California's WARN report, the prior year's report or the Orange County Business Journal's story from March 2026. If Supernal offered you a package, what's negotiable in a severance agreement may help you weigh it.

How many people has Supernal laid off?

California's notices list 349 jobs across two rounds, and February 27, 2026 is the newest Supernal date in our WARN tracker. AIN counted 52 positions in the earlier round, one fewer than California's report shows. These are notice counts, so they don't measure every change in Supernal's workforce.

Why did Supernal lay off most of its staff?

A company spokesman called it "a strategic pivot to ensure our staffing and cost structures are optimized for the long-term delivery of our market-aligned aircraft design," the Los Angeles Times reported. By then Supernal had paused development of its aircraft, a move AeroTime reported in September 2025 after the CEO and CTO left.

Is Supernal shutting down?

Not according to its 2026 statements. A spokesperson told AIN in March that Supernal "is not shutting down," and in May it told the Orange County Business Journal it was a "CTO-led organization" with "no updates to share regarding a CEO."

Which Supernal locations had layoffs?

The February 2026 lines in California's WARN report show 176 and 58 jobs at two Irvine addresses, 48 in Fremont, 13 in Mojave and 1 in California City. The June 2025 round, in the prior year's report, showed 27 in Fremont, 20 and 5 at the same two Irvine addresses and 1 in Mojave.
