Laid off from Symbotic.
Symbotic's 2023 and 2025 cuts each fell on people tied to a part of the business it was changing. In 2023 those were staff and contractors, as robot building went to outside manufacturers. In 2025 the cuts landed at the grocery-robot unit Symbotic had bought from Walmart months earlier.

The most recent Symbotic layoff we've found
In April 2025 Symbotic gave Massachusetts notice of layoffs at its Andover robotics unit, and the notice listed June 27 that year as the effective date. It's the newer of the two Symbotic filings in our WARN tracker.
What Symbotic layoffs have meant for employees
If you were cut in 2023 or 2025, it happened at a company whose sales had been climbing. In the quarter behind the 2023 charge, revenue nearly tripled from a year earlier and the backlog of unfilled orders stood at $12 billion, the Boston Globe reported, and the Globe's 2025 story put the previous year's revenue growth at 52 percent, to $1.8 billion. The reasons Symbotic gave for both rounds were about how it runs its operations, down to the chief executive's 2023 remark that teams were “working diligently to be more efficient.” If a hiring manager asks how your Symbotic job ended, that gives you an answer rooted in the company's choices, and explaining a layoff shows ways to say it briefly.
Contractors made up half of the 2023 cut, and the full-time half came from a staff the Globe put at 1,120 full-time employees in September 2022. Symbotic's results release that quarter announced “significant outsourcing and resource rationalization milestones,” its name for a move that cost 200 jobs. The totals for each cut also count different people. The 2023 figure includes contractors, the 2018 Oceanside count included agency temps, according to the San Diego Business Journal, and the 2025 figure is the job count from the Massachusetts notice listed in our WARN tracker. Adding the three together would mix different kinds of count. If you worked at Symbotic on contract or through a staffing agency, people in your position were counted in 2018 and 2023.
The Andover cuts came at a unit Symbotic had owned only since January. The unit began as Alert Innovation, which Walmart bought from its founder, John Lert, in 2022, and Lert had also founded Symbotic itself, as CasePick Systems, before selling it to Rick Cohen in 2009, so the 2025 purchase put both of Lert's companies under one roof. If you worked there continuously from the Alert Innovation days through both sales, one job may carry three employer names, and listing them in order on a résumé, Alert Innovation, then Walmart, then Symbotic, lets a hiring manager read it as one stretch of work.
Walmart figures in both of the cuts Symbotic explained. Symbotic had spent years installing its systems in some Walmart warehouses, the Globe noted, and the manufacturing it outsourced in 2023 was of the machines that move goods around large warehouses for Walmart and other retailers. In 2025 Walmart was the seller, agreeing as part of the sale to install the Andover unit's automated grocery order packing system in some of its stores and to pay Symbotic up to $520 million. The cut fell at the unit, and the unit's product kept its buyer.
The Oceanside closing notice covered a Symbotic operation that ran warehouse work and maintenance for one customer. The Business Journal counted 29 Symbotic employees there, mostly cell operators and automation maintenance technicians, and four employees at the facility accepted jobs at other Symbotic locations. If your crew runs a Symbotic system for a single customer, Oceanside is the case closest to yours, and it shows a move to another Symbotic site was open to at least some of the people there.
Symbotic's cuts have surfaced through its own results and through state filings. The 2023 round came out in a quarterly results release, posted in Symbotic's newsroom, and on an analyst call, while the Oceanside and Andover rounds became public through the notices Symbotic filed with California and Massachusetts, which local papers then reported. If you're still at Symbotic, those are the places earlier cuts came to light. If you worked at Andover or Oceanside, Massachusetts unemployment or California unemployment covers the state your job was in.
A sourced history of Symbotic layoffs
April 2025, Andover unit bought from Walmart
Symbotic's April 29 notice to Massachusetts, in our WARN tracker, listed 400 jobs, and the Boston Globe reported they were at the Andover robotics unit it had bought from Walmart that January, with the layoffs scheduled for June 27.
Early 2023, robot manufacturing moved to outside suppliers
In the quarter that ended March 25, Symbotic stopped manufacturing in Montreal and cut back in Wilmington, its May 2023 results said, booking an $8.4 million severance and restructuring charge. The Boston Globe counted 200 jobs, 100 held by contractors.
October 2018, Oceanside plant closing notice
Symbotic's October 2018 notice, in our WARN tracker, said it would close its Oceanside plant by December 31, affecting 48 people, the San Diego Business Journal reported. The plant ran warehouse operations and maintenance for Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling.
What to do if you're laid off from Symbotic
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Symbotic's biggest hubs: Massachusetts, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Symbotic's hub states run: Massachusetts, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Symbotic layoff and severance questions
What severance has Symbotic given laid-off employees?
In the 2023 outsourcing quarter, Symbotic's results included $3 million in severance costs, its chief financial officer told analysts, the Boston Globe reported. In the 2025 deal for its grocery-robot unit, Walmart agreed to cover some severance costs if the unit's employees were laid off in the first year, the Globe's 2025 report said. Neither story gives a severance formula, so if Symbotic offered you a package, how severance terms get negotiated covers what tends to move.
Why did Symbotic lay off workers in Andover?
Symbotic said it made the decisions “following a thorough post-close review of our operations to ensure we are best positioned for the future with an effective structure,” the Boston Globe reported. The layoffs came as it folded the former Walmart unit into its own operations, a few months after buying it.
Why did Symbotic cut jobs in 2023?
It was moving robot manufacturing to outside companies. Chief executive Rick Cohen told analysts the teams were “executing a new outsourcing strategy” and that Symbotic was “scaling up a network of supplier and contractor partners,” according to the Boston Globe, and the company's May 2023 results said that transition led to an $8.4 million charge covering severance and restructuring.
Did Symbotic file WARN notices for its layoffs?
Two of Symbotic's cuts went through state WARN filings, the 2018 Oceanside closing in California and the 2025 Andover layoffs in Massachusetts, and both notices appear in our WARN tracker. The 2023 manufacturing cut has no notice there.
