Tenet Healthcare layoff history
If you're among the 1,037, the document behind this is a WARN notice Conifer Health Solutions sent the Texas Workforce Commission, dated Sept. 2, 2026, setting a permanent layoff for Nov. 2. The people it covers mostly work remotely across the U.S. and organizationally report to Conifer's office at 14201 Dallas Parkway. HR director Stephanie Wheeler wrote that the layoff is expected to be permanent, and the notice says everyone affected has been told their separation date, no union represents them and none can bump a more junior colleague to stay on. The Dallas Morning News reported it was unclear which roles are going, and Conifer didn't immediately answer that paper's questions. Losing a job you may have done from home, with the reasons boiled down to one sentence in a state filing, is a rough way to get this news, and it's fair to be angry at how little has been explained.
The CommonSpirit exit was settled in February. Tenet's Feb. 2, 2026 release set out about $1.9 billion in CommonSpirit payments over three years and a roughly $540 million payment from Conifer for CommonSpirit's 23.8% stake, and said Conifer would keep serving CommonSpirit through the end of 2026. The September WARN notice then gave an earlier end date, saying Conifer would no longer provide services to CommonSpirit after Oct. 30. CEO Saum Sutaria said Tenet respects CommonSpirit's decision to insource the work, which ends a contract expected to run through 2032. The same release said Conifer would expand its investments in artificial intelligence, automation and global operating capabilities, and on the investor call about the deal Sutaria said AI and offshoring would create opportunities to lower Conifer's costs, Healthcare Dive reported. The notice lists restructuring and technology initiatives next to the CommonSpirit exit, and no source on record splits the 1,037 jobs between them.
Tenet's filings give company-wide severance totals, and none of them ties those costs to Conifer. Its 2025 annual report lists employee severance costs of $8 million for 2025, $11 million for 2024 and $15 million for 2023, next to $13 million, $9 million and $12 million for moving administrative functions to its global business center, which Tenet runs in Manila. The report files that business-center work under aligning operations in the most strategic and cost-effective structure. In the first half of 2026, company-wide severance costs reached $15 million, against $4 million a year earlier, plus $6 million for the business-center move, with no unit or headcount attached to any of those lines.
Tenet has cut broadly before. In January 2018, executive chairman Ronald Rittenmeyer said layoffs would rise from 1,300 to 2,000 as the company worked to reduce its debt load, according to The Wall Street Journal as Healthcare Dive summarized it. By then Tenet had closed its 232-bed Abrazo Maryvale Campus in Phoenix over declining demand, and a month earlier it had said it was weighing a sale of Conifer. In 2024 Tenet sold three South Carolina hospitals, six in California and its majority stake in five in Alabama. Novant welcomed its new team members on closing in South Carolina, and Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham had more than 7,300 employees when Orlando Health agreed to buy Tenet's stake, in a deal that called for a new 10-year Conifer contract for those hospitals' revenue cycle work. Our WARN tracker holds 25 filings under Tenet, Conifer and Abrazo names, dated 2000 through 2020.
Before Nov. 2, get your separation date, any severance offer and the date your health coverage ends in writing, since no terms are on record, and with no union in the picture those questions go straight to HR. Contact your state's unemployment program as soon as you're out of work, the Labor Department advises. Its summary says you usually qualify if you lost the job through no fault of yours, which most states read as a separation for lack of available work, and you meet your state's work and wage requirements. Each state sets its own eligibility rules, so read yours before you file.

Tenet Healthcare layoff and severance questions
Is Tenet Healthcare laying off employees in 2026?
Yes, at its Conifer Health Solutions subsidiary, where a Texas WARN notice sets a permanent layoff of 1,037 employees for Nov. 2, 2026. Company-wide, Tenet's second-quarter 10-Q shows $15 million of employee severance costs in the first half of 2026, up from $4 million a year earlier, with no unit or headcount attached.
Why is Conifer Health Solutions laying off workers?
The notice puts it this way, "Conifer is taking this action due to restructuring and technology initiatives related to, among other things, no longer providing services to CommonSpirit Health after October 30, 2026," as the Houston Chronicle quoted it. CommonSpirit, a Conifer customer since 2012, chose to insource that revenue cycle work and agreed to pay Tenet almost $1.9 billion over three years to leave a contract set to run through 2032.
Does Conifer pay severance to laid-off employees?
No terms are on record for this layoff. The parts of the notice the Chronicle describes cover separation dates, bumping rights and union status and say nothing about pay, and Conifer didn't respond when Healthcare Dive asked about the cuts. Tenet's filings give only company-wide totals, such as $8 million of employee severance costs in 2025, so ask HR in writing for your own figure and how it was worked out.
Where do remote Conifer employees file for unemployment?
The Labor Department's guidance is generally to file in the state where the work happened. If you live somewhere else now, or worked in more than one state, your current state's agency can explain how to file with the others. The notice went to Texas, home of the Dallas office the workers report to, so confirm with your own state before assuming Texas takes the claim. First checks generally arrive two to three weeks after filing.
What happened to workers when Tenet sold its hospitals?
Tenet's 2024 sales covered 14 hospitals in South Carolina, California and Alabama, the Alabama five through a sale of its majority stake. Novant Health, buying the three in South Carolina, said at closing it was "beyond thrilled to welcome our new team members," and Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham had more than 7,300 employees when Orlando Health agreed to buy Tenet's stake. None of those accounts counts jobs cut or kept.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Tenet Healthcare?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Tenet Healthcare's biggest U.S. hubs are Texas, Georgia, Arizona. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Tenet Healthcare?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Tenet Healthcare?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Tenet Healthcare?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
