Laid off from TJX.
Every TJX cut on record since 2023 has been one T.J. Maxx or Marshalls store closing at a time, the 2025 ones explained as real estate strategy and some paired with a job at a nearby store. The older record includes the A.J. Wright shutdown announced in 2010, about 4,400 positions.

Recent TJX layoffs
TJX closed at least four T.J. Maxx stores in 2026
TheStreet's September 2026 tally, citing Inc., counted at least four T.J. Maxx closings in 2026, in Gilbert, Arizona, on Boston's Newbury Street, and in Silver Spring and Cumberland, Maryland, while TJX's store count rose by 23 to 5,285 in the quarter ended August 1. None of those closings carries a 2026 filing in our tracker.

TJX layoff history
Since 2023, every TJX layoff on record has been a store going dark. In September 2025 TJX told Massachusetts it would permanently close the T.J. Maxx at 360 Newbury Street in Boston, in a three-story building, laying off 117 people on January 5, 2026. The next month Marshalls of CA filed notices for stores in Los Angeles and San Jose, 62 and 64 jobs, closing the same day. Those three are TJX's recent entries in our WARN tracker, 3 filings covering 243 jobs since the start of 2025. For 2026 the tracker's TJX count is zero.
That's a thin paper trail for a company TJX's size. It counted about 377,000 associates and more than 5,200 stores in ten countries when its fiscal year ended January 31, 2026, and our tracker has 10 filings for it across all the years it covers. Not every closing triggers one. Federal rules reach plant closings of 50 or more employees within 30 days at employers with at least 100 full-time staff, and California's reach any closure at a site with 75 or more full and part-time employees over the prior year. Some TJX notices sit outside our tracker too, such as New York's 2023 filings for a Bronx Marshalls and a Brooklyn T.J. Maxx, and it holds none for the 2026 Maryland closings.
For Newbury Street and both California Marshalls, TJX gave one explanation, "We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies," in its Newbury Street statement and word for word for the Marshalls. At Newbury Street it said workers could transfer to another location, and for the two New York closings in January 2024 a spokesperson said the company had offered its associates other jobs in nearby locations. Nothing in the reporting we track attaches a severance figure to any of these closings.
The severance language on record comes from bigger reorganizations. The A.J. Wright shutdown TJX announced in December 2010 cost about 4,400 positions, almost half part-time, and TJX promised pay at least through the holiday season, enhanced severance and help placing people at nearby stores, inside a pretax closing-cost estimate of $250 million to $280 million that included severance. When 40 Sierra jobs in Cheyenne went in January 2017 in a digital consolidation, a TJX spokeswoman said a severance package and other support were provided. The 300-person IT cut of May 2018 came with outsourcing, and TJX said some could find jobs with the outside provider.
A closing is a rough way to go out, and a one-line statement about real estate strategy doesn't soften it. If a TJX closing has your name on it, ask for the transfer offer on paper before saying yes or no, including the store, the hours, the pay and whether declining changes anything else you'd receive. In California, a 2026 WARN notice must describe the support an employer plans for the people it's letting go and say whether it's lining up that help with the local workforce board, some other group or no one. After the state processes a notice, California's local workforce areas set up Rapid Response, with help on job searches, training and unemployment benefits. Past closings don't bind the next one, so judge an offer by what's actually on the paper in front of you.

What to do after being laid off from TJX
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. TJX's biggest hubs: California, Massachusetts. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what TJX's hub states run: California, Massachusetts, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
TJX layoff and severance questions
How many WARN notices has TJX filed?
Our tracker holds 10 TJX filings across the years it covers, and 3 filings covering 243 jobs since the start of 2025. Newbury Street's 117 jobs in Boston make up the largest of the three. Read the count as a floor, since some TJX notices sit outside the tracker, like New York notices for a Bronx Marshalls and a Brooklyn T.J. Maxx in 2023.
Why is T.J. Maxx closing stores?
TJX's explanation, in the reporting we track, comes down to one line. "We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies," a spokesperson said of the Newbury Street closing, and Marshalls said the same of its two California stores. Neither statement named anything particular to the stores involved.
Does TJX give severance when a store closes?
TJX's recent single-store closings carry no terms on record. What the company described was work elsewhere, a transfer for Newbury Street staff and, for the Bronx and Brooklyn closings, jobs at nearby locations. Its severance language on record comes from larger moves, enhanced severance in the A.J. Wright shutdown announced in 2010 and a package for the 2017 Sierra cuts, both without amounts. Ask HR to put the transfer option, the exit option and any deadline in writing before you pick.
Has TJX laid off corporate employees?
Yes. The A.J. Wright shutdown TJX announced in December 2010 closed that division's home office along with 71 stores and two distribution centers. TJX also laid off 300 information technology workers in May 2018 as it outsourced some services, and 40 Sierra positions in Cheyenne went in January 2017 in a consolidation of TJX's U.S. digital operations.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from TJX?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. TJX's biggest U.S. hubs are California, Massachusetts. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at TJX?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at TJX?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from TJX?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
