Laid off from Toyota.
Toyota's headquarters left California, Kentucky and New York for Plano, Texas, after 2014, and from 2021 its finance arm began moving Iowa and Maryland service centers. The service center move offered staff in good standing places at the new sites, and Cedar Rapids' last layoffs were set for 2025.

The most recent Toyota layoff we've found
In November 2024, Toyota Financial Services announced plans to lay off its remaining Cedar Rapids employees, the final step in closing its operations there. Every Cedar Rapids employee who wanted to stay with the company had been given a position in Chandler, Ariz., Plano, Texas, or Alpharetta, Ga., Toyota Financial's Vincent Bray told the Corridor Business Journal.
What Toyota layoffs have meant for employees
When Toyota moved its Erlanger engineering and manufacturing offices, which its 2014 plan had split between Plano, the Georgetown plant and a Michigan technical center, the Kentucky filing in our WARN tracker counted as many jobs as the company said the move would affect, yet a company spokeswoman said every one of those employees received a job offer. The AP story that WKMS carried was later corrected to say no one there was laid off. In Erlanger, then, a filing's count and the company's account of who lost work were far apart. If your job appears on a Toyota notice tied to a move, it's worth knowing whether an offer to follow the work is part of it, as it was in Erlanger.
Toyota Motor North America's 2015 California notices for its Torrance and Gardena sites gave the end of 2017 as their date, and the Plano campus opened that July. Staff had two years to decide whether to move to Texas, and relocating employees were offered an incentive to stay with the company in Plano for two years, WardsAuto reported from the opening, where Lentz credited that long window for how many came. By then Toyota had hired 800 people locally for about 1,000 open positions. Lentz also said the move let Toyota streamline duplicated teams, such as the legal and HR staff the sales organization had kept for itself, and that the headcount changes let it hire more engineers for its Ann Arbor operation. If a relocation offer from Toyota reaches you, the length of any stay tied to the money is worth weighing next to the move itself.
Toyota's moves have run on long lead times. The 2014 announcement expected most headquarters staff to move in late 2016 or early 2017, and Toyota Financial Services' Cedar Rapids wind-down, announced in 2021, had its final layoffs scheduled for the end of 2025, a spokesperson told the Corridor Business Journal. If you're inside one of these consolidations, a runway that long leaves room to line up a search where you live before the move date arrives and set it against any job offered at the new site. It also leaves time to price the move itself, from housing to a partner's job.
Toyota Financial Services has twice pulled its field work into the same three cities since the headquarters move. Its fiscal 2021 10-K says the field-office restructuring announced in fiscal 2020 was complete, leaving dealer service centers in Chandler, Ariz., Plano and Alpharetta, Ga., and that its customer service centers, Cedar Rapids and Owings Mills, Md., among them, would move in with them within two years, though its 2014 headquarters release had said service-center staff wouldn't be relocating with the headquarters. The positions on record for Cedar Rapids staff who chose to continue with the company were in those three cities. If one of those positions is offered to you, whether it can be done from where you live is what decides how much accepting it costs.
Toyota's notices went in under the units' own names, which is worth knowing when you look one up in the tracker. The oldest, from 1994, came from Toyota Vehicle Processors in West Chicago, a site Illinois fire marshal records list under Toyota Motor Sales, and the newest from Toyota Motor Credit in Owings Mills in 2022, with TABC, Inc., Toyota Motor North America and Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing between them. For a claim, the state rules are at Texas, where the 2014 plan put the headquarters, Kentucky, home of the Georgetown plant, California, where Toyota projected 2,300 employees after the move, and Iowa and Maryland for the Cedar Rapids and Owings Mills service centers.
A sourced history of Toyota layoffs

The company said it would lay off its 54 remaining Cedar Rapids employees, all working remotely. Iowa's notice dated the layoffs Dec. 31, 2024, but a spokesperson told the Corridor Business Journal they would take effect Dec. 31, 2025.
May 2022, customer service center notices in Iowa and Maryland
Toyota Financial Services planned to cut 322 Cedar Rapids positions effective that July, the Corridor Business Journal later reported, and a Maryland filing in our WARN tracker listed 196 jobs at Owings Mills, where its fiscal 2021 10-K placed the Eastern service center.
March 2021, Toyota Financial Services moves its customer service centers
Toyota Financial Services told KCRG its three customer service centers would join its dealer service centers in Chandler, Plano and Alpharetta within two years, affecting about a third of its 3,300 team members, about 600 in Cedar Rapids.
January 2017, Toyota's Erlanger, Kentucky, offices begin moving
Toyota began moving jobs out of its Erlanger engineering and manufacturing headquarters, a move company officials said would affect 648 workers, with relocations set to continue through 2018, the Associated Press reported in a story WKMS ran.
May 2015, Toyota Auto Body California cuts in Long Beach
Toyota would lay off close to 100 full-time and some variable workers at its TABC parts plant, taking full-time staff from about 400 to around 300 as Tacoma parts were to move to San Antonio, officials told the Long Beach Post.
April 2014, headquarters consolidation in Plano, Texas, announced
Toyota announced it would put its sales, manufacturing, corporate and finance headquarters on one Plano campus within three years, affecting about 4,000 employees in Torrance, Erlanger and New York, its April 2014 release said.
What to do if you're laid off from Toyota
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Toyota's biggest hubs: California, Kentucky, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Toyota's hub states run: California, Kentucky, Texas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Toyota layoff and severance questions
What severance has Toyota given laid-off employees?
Toyota Financial Services said in its April 2014 release that everyone in good standing at its Torrance headquarters would be offered "an industry-leading relocation or retention package," a package for moving or staying on. In 2021, Cedar Rapids employees who confirmed their office's closing to KCRG did so anonymously, the station said, for fear of losing severance packages. Neither the release nor those accounts gives terms, an amount or a formula.
Did Toyota lay off workers when it moved its headquarters to Plano?
Toyota's North America CEO, Jim Lentz, described the move in terms of who went. At the Plano campus opening in 2017 he said Toyota had retained 72% of its workforce from California, Kentucky and New York and that about 1,400 people had decided not to make the move, WardsAuto reported, and the Dallas Morning News later put the number who moved from California at more than 2,800.
Is Toyota laying off workers in 2026?
No Toyota filing has reached our WARN tracker since the start of 2025, but the tracker draws on state archives with gaps, so it can't rule out a layoff in 2026. Toyota's own count of its U.S. white-collar workforce, a separate measure, rose about 31% from 2020 through 2025 to about 47,500 people, a May 2026 CNBC report said.
Has Toyota laid off workers at its U.S. plants?
Toyota has, at TABC, its Long Beach parts plant and its first U.S. manufacturing investment, where it planned in 2015 to cut close to 100 full-time jobs, Toyota officials told the Long Beach Post. Its April 2014 announcement had said the separate headquarters move wouldn't touch its 10 U.S. manufacturing plants, and it expected about 8,200 employees to remain in Kentucky afterward.
