Laid off from Trinity Industries.
Trinity Industries' state layoff filings come most often from Longview, Texas, and Cartersville, Georgia, counting Thrall Car's filings from before its 2001 merger with Trinity. The railcar maker's newest restructuring sits elsewhere, at a Jonesboro, Arkansas, repair shop, where it said in 2026 it would end heavy maintenance.

The most recent Trinity Industries layoff we've found
Trinity told investors on its October 2026 earnings call that it plans to repurpose its Jonesboro, Arkansas, maintenance facility for storage and mobile repair as tank car compliance work moderates, and that its remaining four facilities could support current and expected volumes. The company had announced the change on September 23, NEA Report reported.
What Trinity Industries layoffs have meant for employees
The name on an old filing may not be Trinity's. Thrall Car's notices from before the merger recorded in Trinity's transition-period 10-K still carry Thrall's name, and Trinity's own have gone out as Trinity Tank Car, Trinity Rail and Trinity North American Freight Car as well as the parent. Cartersville is the clearest case, with Thrall's name on its older rows and Trinity names on the later ones, so the filer changed and the town didn't. If you're checking your plant's history in our WARN filings, those names are worth trying alongside Trinity Industries.
Trinity's explanations have stayed close to orders and market conditions. Its January 2009 update pointed to railcar demand, FreightWaves quoted its Vidor letter on customer orders, Patch carried its Cartersville statement on market conditions, and a spokesman put the 2025 Longview restructuring down to various market pressures, the Longview News-Journal reported. The same week as Longview's notice, Trinity's July 2025 earnings call tied its production changes to lower order volumes and said its remaining severance costs for the year would fall in Rail Products. If orders at your plant have slowed, you don't have to wait for a notice to start lining up other work.
The 2025 closing plan didn't take Trinity out of Longview. A spokesman said in 2025 that investment was planned for Plant 19, and in its October 2026 remarks Trinity described a Longview consolidation project as ongoing, part of a decision to expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint. The two counts for the closing differ as well, 170 on the state notice and 156 in the News-Journal, so either figure is only one measure of it. If you left Plant 200, those statements are about buildings and equipment, and a spending plan for a plant isn't a hiring plan.
The Jonesboro figure counts employees affected, which is the company's word and not a layoff total. Trinity didn't say how many positions the mobile repair and storage work would hold or how many people would lose their jobs, NEA Report reported, and it gave no date for the change. Only some affected employees were to get a chance to apply for those positions, so if Trinity gives you that chance, it's one option to weigh against other work. If your job there ends, Trinity said in its October remarks that it's working with local and state resources on alternative opportunities, and Arkansas unemployment benefits explains the claim itself. Trinity has described its help in general terms before, as when it said it was assisting Cartersville's affected employees with finding new jobs.
Trinity has explained its repair-side cuts in terms of repair work itself. Its Vidor letter pointed to a downturn in rail maintenance, and in those same remarks it said the increase in tank car compliance work was moderating. If you work in another Trinity maintenance shop and compliance jobs are slowing there, that's worth weighing, since it's the change Trinity tied to Jonesboro.
Our tracker leaves out part of this record. The 2009 update named a workforce reduction at the corporate headquarters, yet the newest Dallas row we have is dated 2001. Jonesboro sits in a state whose notices we don't collect, and the Sabinas cuts La Voz reported are in Mexico. So a quiet year in the tracker for your plant isn't evidence that nothing happened there. If your job in Sabinas ended, Coahuila's labor secretary said in May 2026 that work was under way to place people at other companies in the region.
A sourced history of Trinity Industries layoffs
September 2026, Jonesboro heavy maintenance restructuring
Citing market conditions, Trinity said it would permanently end heavy railcar maintenance at Jonesboro and that about 172 employees would be affected, NEA Report reported. The site would stay open for light maintenance, mobile repair and storage, with some affected employees able to apply for those jobs.
By May 2026, Sabinas, Mexico, job cuts
A staff cut left about 500 people without work at Trinity Rail in Sabinas, La Voz reported in May 2026, citing Coahuila's labor secretary. She tied it to contracts, production and tariffs announced in 2025, and said it came in two stages, some of it temporary.
July 2025, Longview Plant 200 closing notice
Trinity said it would close Plant 200 on Jordan Valley Road, which the Longview News-Journal reported would mean 156 layoffs and leave close to 300 people at Plant 19. Our WARN filings show a July 30 notice with 170 jobs and a September 30 layoff date.
2021, Vidor, Texas, maintenance plant closing
Trinity scheduled the permanent closure of its Vidor plant, and a notice said 59 workers would be laid off by April 30, FreightWaves reported. Its letter to the state blamed a rail maintenance downturn and a dramatic decrease in customer orders.
2020, manufacturing cuts and trucking exit
Manufacturing headcount was down 47% for the year by the third quarter, Trinity said on its October 2020 earnings call. It also said it would leave U.S. trucking and logistics to outside carriers.
November 2016, Cartersville workforce reduction
TrinityRail told employees at its Cartersville plant in early November of a reduction it said would affect 295 people, effective January 8, 2017, Patch reported, citing market conditions and aligning production among facilities. All got a 60-day notice, it said. Our WARN filings list 298 jobs.
March 2016, Longview tank car layoffs
Trinity Tank Car told the city it would lay off about 600 employees at two Longview plants, KETK reported, citing the Longview News-Journal.
January 2009, four railcar plants idled or idling
Trinity had idled or was idling four railcar plants in Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas as demand declined, its January 27 business update said. Other plants in Georgia, Texas and Mexico and the corporate headquarters had also reduced their workforce.
December 2001, Thrall merger restructuring
After its October merger with Thrall Car, Trinity recorded a charge to restructure its Rail Group in North America and Europe, including $3.8 million in severance costs for about 2,100 employees, its transition-period 10-K says.
What to do if you're laid off from Trinity Industries
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Trinity Industries's biggest hubs: Texas, Georgia, Arkansas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Trinity Industries's hub states run: Texas, Georgia, Arkansas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Trinity Industries layoff and severance questions
Is Trinity Industries laying off workers in 2026?
Trinity announced one restructuring in 2026, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and put the number of employees affected at about 172, NEA Report reported. Separately, Coahuila's labor secretary put job cuts at Trinity Rail in Sabinas, Mexico, at about 500 in a May 2026 report in La Voz. Our WARN filings hold no Trinity row for 2026.
What severance has Trinity Industries given laid-off employees?
On record, Trinity's severance is company totals and general language. It said on its July 2025 earnings call that it expected $15 million of severance expense that year, about $8 million of it already incurred across Rail Products and Corporate, and its transition-period 10-K shows a severance charge of $3.8 million covering about 2,100 employees in December 2001. At Jonesboro it said it was committed to "resources and support," though the statement didn't specify the assistance, NEA Report reported.
How many WARN notices has Trinity Industries filed?
Our WARN filings list 30 rows dated 1990 through 2025, 22 under Trinity names and eight under Thrall Car, which Trinity merged with in October 2001, according to its transition-period 10-K. Texas has 17 and Georgia eight. Rows aren't always separate notices, and the three Longview rows from March 2016 may overlap, since KETK put that cut at about 600 at two plants.
Is Trinity closing its Longview plant?
In August 2025, Trinity said its Jordan Valley Road site, Plant 200, would close as of Sept. 30, while Plant 19 on Shady Brook Lane would keep operating, take some of that equipment and shift to specialty tank cars, the Longview News-Journal reported. On its October 2026 call, Trinity said a project to modernize and consolidate its Longview tank car facility was ongoing, and it reported a gain on selling part of the facility.
Will Trinity call back laid-off workers?
The record runs both ways. A company letter on the 2016 Longview cuts said employees "should have no expectation of recall," KETK reported, while Coahuila's labor secretary said in 2026 that some Sabinas cuts were temporary and that a recovery could bring part of those workers back, La Voz reported. If a Trinity letter uses language like Longview's, you could plan your next move as if the job isn't coming back.
