Laid off from Uber.
Uber cut about 10% of its customer support organization in July 2026 as it leaned harder on AI, a month after cutting nearly a quarter of its HR division. In 2020 it published real terms, ten weeks of severance and healthcare through year-end. In 2026 it has published none.

Community Operations cut about 10% in an AI restructuring
Bloomberg reported on July 22, 2026 that Uber was cutting roughly 10% of its Community Operations organization as it consolidated teams and expanded its use of AI. A California WARN notice lists 41 permanent cuts effective September 21, with terminations outside California beginning August 21. Affected California workers remain on full pay and benefits through the 60-day notice period.

Uber layoff history
The 2026 rounds are AI restructuring by Uber's own framing. The Community Operations lead told employees the company could not scale frontier technology on top of fragmented processes, and Uber said on an earnings call that AI coding tools used by nearly all its engineers let it moderate hiring against plan. The WARN filing itself calls the cuts only a permanent reduction in force, the AI story lives in memos, not in the legal paperwork.
The filings also show the fine print worth knowing. About nine California workers may keep jobs if they relocate, and remote division employees were told to move near office hubs and work in person three days a week. Relocation-or-separation offers change your unemployment position in some states if you decline, so get the terms of any such offer in writing before deciding.
If you were affected at Uber, do not confuse the 60 days of continued pay with severance, that is WARN compliance, and any actual package starts after it. California's mini-WARN and final-pay rules apply to the September dates, and unemployment eligibility generally begins when the wage continuation ends. The 2020 precedent of ten weeks plus year-end healthcare is history rather than promise, but it tells you what this company once considered publishable.
Previous Uber layoff rounds
July 2026 · Roughly 10% of the Community Operations organization, with 41 California roles effective September 21 and terminations elsewhere from August 21
Not published. The California notice provides full pay and benefits through the 60-day WARN period, which is legal notice, not severance.
June 2026 · About 23% of the People and Places division, which includes HR and recruiting, under 1% of the roughly 34,000-person company, with 32 roles in the California filing
Not published.
May 2020 · 3,700 customer support and recruiting roles, then 3,000 more two weeks later, about a quarter of corporate staff in a month
10 weeks of severance and healthcare coverage through the end of 2020, announced publicly at the time.
How Uber has compared
Uber belongs to the small group in our records with a published historical package to hold against present silence. The 2020 terms were ten weeks of severance minimum with healthcare through year-end, and nothing about either 2026 round has been disclosed. When a company has already shown it can publish terms, silence reads as a choice.
Uber layoff and severance questions
How many people is Uber laying off in 2026?
Two rounds are on record. June 2026 cut about 23% of the People and Places division, HR and recruiting, under 1% of the company. July 2026 cut roughly 10% of Community Operations, the customer support organization. California filings account for 73 roles across both, and Uber confirmed the cuts extend to other states without giving totals.
What severance is Uber paying in the 2026 layoffs?
Nothing has been published for either 2026 round. Affected California workers get full pay and benefits through the 60-day WARN notice period, which is required notice rather than severance. In 2020 Uber publicly gave 10 weeks of severance with healthcare through year-end, a precedent, not a promise.
Does Uber's 60 days of notice pay count as severance?
No. The 60 days of continued pay and benefits satisfies WARN notice requirements, it is what the law demands, not a package. Severance is whatever the separation agreement offers beyond that date, so read yours for what actually follows September 21.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Uber?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Uber's biggest U.S. hubs are California, New York, Arizona. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Uber?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Uber?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
What to do after being laid off from Uber
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Uber's biggest hubs: California, New York, Arizona. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Find out in writing how long you have to review the severance agreement. At 40 or older, federal law guarantees 21 days, 45 in group layoffs. Under 40, the packet's deadline may be real, so ask for time rather than assume. Read our severance breakdown first. The clauses matter more than the number.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
