Broadcom says the VMware restructuring is substantially complete

Broadcom's annual report for the fiscal year ended 2 November 2025 says it has substantially completed the restructuring activities it started for the VMware merger. The charges track that, $597 million in fiscal 2025 against $1,787 million the year before. The most recent round on record ran just ahead of it. In October 2025 Broadcom notified California of 247 job cuts at 3401 Hillview Avenue in Palo Alto, the address VMware's last annual report gives as its headquarters, effective at the end of that year. Our tracker holds no VMware filing since the start of 2025.

VMware layoff history

If Broadcom cut your job at VMware, the notice probably arrived by email. The message said the position was being eliminated and the employment terminated, and promised a severance package and a non-working paid notice period. What it didn't carry was a number. Broadcom issued WARN Act notices a week after the deal closed on 22 November 2023, and the largest covered 1,267 jobs at VMware's Palo Alto campus starting 26 January 2024. Across eight states the first month's notices came to 2,838, and Broadcom didn't say which positions they covered.

One filed document sets a severance floor here, and it's the merger agreement rather than a company policy. Broadcom agreed that for twelve months after the close it would give continuing VMware employees at least their existing base salary and severance benefits no less favorable than what they were already eligible for. That's a floor with a date on it, twelve months from the November 2023 close. The terms it protected sit in a disclosure letter VMware handed Broadcom that isn't part of the filed agreement, so no amount and no formula is on record. One early round was reported at 401 people, 217 in Georgia and 184 in Colorado, by an outlet that said it couldn't verify the count independently.

Broadcom's own filings are where the size of this shows up. It booked $1,787 million of restructuring charges in fiscal 2024 and $597 million in fiscal 2025, with $1,510 million and $428 million of that in employee termination costs, and the note ties the work to the merger by name, restructuring activities begun to integrate the acquired business and align its workforce. The liability still on the books fell to $76 million by 2 November 2025. Those are dollars rather than people. Broadcom reports a single headcount for the whole company, about 33,000 at that date, covering semiconductors as well as software, so it won't tell you how many VMware roles are left.

The figure that gets repeated is a halving. Business Insider reported more than half of VMware's workforce gone by March 2025, about 16,000 left against the more than 38,000 counted at the start of 2023, and VMware's own last annual report put it at about 38,300 in February 2023. No filing confirms the smaller end of that. Not all of the gap is layoffs either. About 4,000 people moved to KKR with the end-user computing division in July 2024 and became Omnissa, which is a change of employer rather than a job loss, and former employees and LinkedIn posts describe later cuts in marketing, partnerships and VMware Cloud Foundation that stay unverified accounts.

A cut this size can make your own exit feel like a line item, and that's a hard thing to be on the receiving end of. What's worth doing now turns on your paperwork rather than on any of these totals. Check whether your package counted the notice period inside the severance or paid it on top, because the email called that period non-working and paid without saying which. If you left in the first year after the close, that floor was still running, so it's worth measuring your package against the VMware severance benefits you were eligible for before the merger. The notices themselves repay reading, because they name the covered site and the effective date. Our tracker holds 12 all-time VMware filings and none since the start of 2025, with the post-close notices filed under Broadcom's own name.

How VMware's layoffs compare to other companies

Broadcom bought CA Technologies for nearly $19 billion in 2018 and made deep staffing cuts afterward, and analysts read the VMware reduction as the same playbook running again. That history is worth knowing if the company buying yours has done this before.

What to do after being laid off from VMware

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. VMware's biggest hubs: California, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what VMware's hub states run: California, Texas, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

VMware layoff and severance questions

What severance did Broadcom pay VMware employees?

No figure is on record. The only filed document setting a severance floor is the merger agreement, which held severance at VMware's own terms for twelve months after the November 2023 close and pointed the terms themselves at a disclosure letter that isn't part of the filed agreement. The termination email promised a severance package and a non-working paid notice period without naming an amount. So the number that governs you is the one in your own agreement. If you left inside that first year and the floor covered you, the benefits weren't meant to be less favorable than the VMware terms you were already eligible for, and that's the comparison worth making against your paperwork.

Are VMware layoffs still happening?

Nothing we track shows a round underway. Broadcom's annual report for the year ended 2 November 2025 says it has substantially completed the restructuring activities it began for the VMware merger, and the charges fell from $1,787 million in fiscal 2024 to $597 million in fiscal 2025. The most recent notice on record is 247 jobs at 3401 Hillview Avenue in Palo Alto, filed with California in October 2025. Our tracker holds no VMware filing since the start of 2025. That's an absence of filings under VMware's name, not proof that nobody has been cut since.

What was a VMware transitional role?

Nothing in the reporting we track sets out the terms of one, so treat any description you find as unconfirmed. What's on record is narrower. The merger agreement held severance at VMware's terms for twelve months from the close, and the first-wave email offered a severance package plus a non-working paid notice period. If you were offered a job with an end date instead of an exit, weigh the salary through that date plus whatever package waits at the end against the package you could take now, and ask for that second number in writing.

How many people did Broadcom cut at VMware?

The first month's WARN notices came to 2,838 across eight states. Past that the count is reported rather than filed. Business Insider put it at more than half the workforce, about 16,000 left by March 2025 against more than 38,000 at the start of 2023, and VMware's last annual report counted about 38,300 in February 2023, so the starting point checks out even though no filing confirms where it ended. About 4,000 people transferred to KKR with the end-user computing division in July 2024, which makes the gap smaller than it looks, and Broadcom's restructuring note quantifies money rather than headcount.

Which states had VMware layoff notices?

Our tracker holds 12 all-time VMware filings and none since the start of 2025, and Broadcom filed the post-close notices under its own name. Reporting lists 1,267 jobs in California, 577 in Austin, 217 in Atlanta, 184 in Broomfield, 169 in New York City, 158 in Bellevue, 150 in Boston and 116 in Reston. The tracker only counts notices that were filed. Plenty of jobs go without one, so a quiet state row settles nothing either way.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from VMware?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. VMware's biggest U.S. hubs are California, Texas. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at VMware?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at VMware?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from VMware?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
