Laid off from Walmart.

Walmart's corporate cuts come with a catch, many aren't cuts at all but orders to relocate to Bentonville. For the world's largest private employer, the question hasn't been whether you keep your job, it's whether you'll move to Arkansas for it.

Walmart cut or relocated roughly 1,000 corporate roles in May 2026

In May 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported that Walmart was laying off or relocating roughly 1,000 corporate workers as it merged its technology and AI product teams onto one shared platform, with many asked to move to Bentonville or Northern California. Walmart told the paper the cuts weren't a direct result of AI replacing jobs. Our tracker holds 12 filings covering 695 jobs in 2026.

Walmart layoff history

Which Walmart you worked for decides most of what a cut looks like. The company reported approximately 2.1 million associates worldwide as of January 31, 2026, about 1.6 million of them in the US, roughly 92% of those hourly, so the corporate rounds that make the headlines land on a thin slice of a very large payroll. In the office restructurings of 2025 and 2026, relocation ran alongside the cuts, and staff were asked to move to Bentonville or Northern California. The warehouse closures came with a transfer incentive written into the notice, and when the Federal Way store closed, its staff were told they were eligible to transfer to another store.

The newest of those rounds landed in May 2026, when the Wall Street Journal reported Walmart was laying off or relocating roughly 1,000 corporate workers. Head of global technology Suresh Kumar and head of global AI acceleration Daniel Danker told staff the company had made changes to simplify how the work is organized and better align roles to the work and skills it needs. Many of the affected staff were asked to relocate to Bentonville or Northern California, and those affected could apply for open roles inside the company. Walmart also told the Journal the layoffs weren't a direct result of AI replacing jobs.

Read the filings with that pattern in mind. In February 2025 Walmart said it would eliminate nearly 700 corporate jobs in New Jersey and North Carolina and asked Hoboken and smaller-office staff to move closer to their teams in California or Arkansas. The New Jersey notice covered 481 jobs at Hoboken, the largest Walmart filing our tracker holds since the start of 2025, and a company spokesperson told NJBIZ that the 481 counted every associate affected by the changes, including the ones offered relocation and the option to remain. North Carolina's notice listed 201 people at Charlotte while the company described 267 workers in that office and wrote that it didn't expect all affected associates to experience employment loss. A number on a Walmart state filing isn't a headcount of people losing work.

The warehouse closures carry the most specific terms on record. Walmart closed the Sam's Club fulfillment center at 1 Tobias Boland Way in Worcester, Massachusetts, telling the state 90 jobs went with it, then filed a March 2026 notice to shutter the Matteson, Illinois fulfillment center and move its operations to other NextGen facilities, with 111 employees affected. Each notice put a transfer offer in writing, $7,500 to move to select facilities and a 90-day paid transition period at Matteson, and the same incentive at Worcester, with relocation benefits for a move beyond 50 miles. Stores work differently. When the Federal Way, Washington store and its pharmacy closed on October 31, 2025, the state counted about 253 employees there, and Walmart said they were eligible to transfer to another store.

On severance the record goes quiet, and there are no terms on record for any of these rounds, no amount and no formula. What exists is promises tied to particular rounds. Charlotte staff who neither relocated nor took another job were eligible for potential benefits including severance pay and help transitioning into a new job, Reuters reported that people who stayed put in that round would get some type of severance package, and when store academy coaches were cut in July 2025, store operations chief Cedric Clark said anyone who didn't apply for or accept a store role would be eligible for severance at the end of a search period. So the document that settles your outcome is the individual offer rather than the state notice. Read what the transition period pays, whether declining a relocation keeps severance intact, and how the company plans to describe your departure to your state's unemployment office. Our WARN filing tracker holds 190 all-time filings under this company's name and 25 covering 2,689 jobs across six states since the start of 2025, and your state's rules sit alongside.

How Walmart's layoffs compare to other companies

A Walmart WARN number counts more than the people losing work. The company told NJBIZ that the 481 in its Hoboken notice covered everyone affected, including associates offered a move to Arkansas and the option to stay.

What to do after being laid off from Walmart

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Walmart's biggest hubs: Arkansas, California, Texas, New Jersey. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Walmart's hub states run: Arkansas, California, Texas, New Jersey, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Walmart layoff and severance questions

What happens if I refuse to relocate to Bentonville?

The record sets out one round in detail. When Walmart closed its Charlotte office in February 2025, it wrote in the notice that it anticipated many affected associates would relocate or continue employment in a new position before the end of a paid transition period, and said anyone who did neither would be eligible for potential benefits including severance pay and help transitioning into a new job. Nothing in the reporting we track says what any other round offered someone who declined a move. Before you decide, get the terms of both options in writing, including what the transition period pays and how the company will describe your departure.

What severance does Walmart pay corporate employees?

There are no terms on record. Walmart hasn't published a formula for any round we track, and the corporate rounds name severance as a category rather than an amount. Walmart said in February 2025 that it would provide individuals relocation support or severance, and Reuters reported that anyone who stayed put would get some type of severance package. The one figure on record belongs to the warehouses, a $7,500 incentive to transfer to select facilities, and that's a transfer payment rather than severance. Your separation agreement holds the terms that apply to you.

Does a Walmart WARN notice mean everyone on it loses their job?

Not on this company's record. A spokesperson told NJBIZ that the 481 in the Hoboken notice counted all associates affected by the changes, including those offered relocation and the option to remain with the company. The Charlotte filing reads the same way, with 201 people in the state notice against 267 workers in the office. Nothing in the reporting we track says how many people took a relocation offer in any round.

Which Walmart warehouses have closed?

Two fulfillment centers are on record for 2026, the Sam's Club fulfillment center in Worcester, Massachusetts, where Walmart told the state 90 employees were affected, and Matteson, Illinois, shuttered under a March 2026 notice with 111 affected and its operations moved to other NextGen facilities. The Worcester notice carried a $7,500 transfer incentive, relocation benefits beyond 50 miles, and a 90-day paid transition period, and the Matteson notice carried the same $7,500 incentive and the same 90-day paid transition period.

Are Walmart store workers affected by the corporate layoffs?

The corporate rounds have been kept separate. CBS News reported that the May 2025 Global Tech restructuring would reach corporate employees rather than store associates. Store-side cuts arrive on their own schedule, like the July 2025 round that cut the market manager assistant role companywide and coaching jobs across around 200 academies. Closures take the rest, and about 253 employees were at the Federal Way, Washington store when it closed on October 31, 2025.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Walmart?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Walmart's biggest U.S. hubs are Arkansas, California, Texas, New Jersey. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Walmart?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Walmart?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Walmart?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
