Laid off from Wellpath.
Wellpath provides medical care in jails and prisons for government clients, and several of its job cuts on record came as a county or state moved that work elsewhere. In 2024 it left Georgia's prisons rather than renew, then filed for bankruptcy, saying it had dropped dozens of contracts.

The most recent Wellpath layoff we've found
Wellpath had told Tennessee's Dislocated Worker Unit about its Shelby County closing on July 31, 2026, according to the state's Aug. 4 WARN memo, which says the 119 workers weren't under a collective bargaining agreement and had no bumping rights. The memo adds that the Greater Memphis Chamber's rapid response team had been notified so it could coordinate services for them.
What Wellpath layoffs have meant for employees
Wellpath's chief restructuring officer described a company of more than 13,000 employees serving federal, state and local government partners in a first-day court filing, and several of the cuts on record line up with one of those partners changing providers. Wellpath's Georgia WARN entry for the state prisons gave termination of contract as its comment, and GPB reported that Centurion Health's prison contract was set to begin July 1, the day after that entry's first separation date. Wellpath's Monterey County layoffs in California's WARN report were set for Dec. 31, the day its jail contract there ended, after founder Taylor Fithian told Monterey County Weekly the company hadn't made the cut in the county's bidding. Placer County picked a new provider through its own request for proposals, and that company was set to start the day after CFMG's service ended, Placer County said.
Wellpath has also been the one to end a contract. A judge hearing Wellpath's suit over Georgia's new prison health contract told the company, as GPB reported, "You terminated the contract." The same court filing from the bankruptcy describes a strategy of exiting unprofitable or high-risk contracts, especially local government ones, and of repricing contracts across the portfolio. It says a contract for facilities in Georgia was one of two that ran a combined negative gross profit of about $40 million, with wage inflation adding to Georgia's losses, and that turnover on the two was high enough to require temporary retention bonuses to keep staff. For someone at a county jail site, the end of a contract can start on Wellpath's side, when the price stops working for it.
A state contract's end reaches past the clinic. When Georgia's prison work ended, the jobs on Wellpath's notice ran from physicians, registered nurses and LPNs to statewide and regional roles, among them a statewide medical director, an HR director, recruiters, an IT director and a finance director. If your Wellpath job is a regional or statewide role tied to one contract, the Georgia notice shows that kind of role ending with the contract too.
The employer name on a notice can differ from the one you know. Tennessee's March 2025 memo names the filer as Wellpath Healthcare, Georgia's 2024 entry names Wellpath LLC, and California's 2026 Placer County notices name Wellpath and CFMG, the provider name Placer County used in its own release. If you're checking a state's list for your site, California's 2025-26 WARN report and the other states' records are worth searching under each of those names.
In Nashville, where Wellpath has its headquarters, the cuts came in two steps. The March 2025 layoff memo listed four addresses, and the October closing memo listed the same four plus a fifth, so a partial layoff at those sites was followed the same year by a notice closing all of them. If your job or worksite was covered by one of these notices, the date the state lists may not be your own last day either. That March memo set separations across a range of dates, and Georgia's 2024 entry gave more than one expected separation date. If one of the notices since 2025 ended your job, there's more on claims in Tennessee, California and Georgia, the three states those notices went to.
In Placer County, the company taking over still had a jail to staff. The county's release said Correctional Healthcare Partners planned 3.6 more full-time equivalent positions on site, would meet CFMG's employees about job opportunities and wanted to hire current CFMG staff. If you worked for CFMG at the Placer sites, that May 2026 plan put an application with Correctional Healthcare Partners for your same job on the table.

What to do if you're laid off from Wellpath
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Wellpath's biggest hubs: Tennessee, California, Georgia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Wellpath's hub states run: Tennessee, California, Georgia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Wellpath layoff and severance questions
What severance has Wellpath given laid-off employees?
Wellpath's November 2024 wages filing in bankruptcy court describes a non-insider severance program under which, consistent with past practice and at times because an employment agreement required it, Wellpath provided certain employees terminated under defined circumstances with arrangements involving one or a combination of severance, COBRA or bonuses. Wellpath said it believed it owed nothing under the program on the filing date and asked to go on honoring the program during the case. That filing gives no amount or formula.
Does Wellpath pay out unused PTO when you're laid off?
In November 2024, Wellpath told the bankruptcy court in a wages filing that it paid employees for accrued, unused PTO at termination when applicable state law required it. Under the policy it described, holiday time and unused bereavement leave weren't paid out at termination, and employees could carry 0 to 240 PTO hours into the next year depending on tenure.
How many WARN notices does Wellpath have since 2025?
In our WARN tracker, Wellpath has 8 filings covering 503 jobs since the start of 2025, in California, Georgia and Tennessee; 4 of them, covering 208 jobs, are dated 2026. The newest and largest is the August 2026 notice for Shelby County, at 119 jobs.
Why did Wellpath file for bankruptcy?
Escalating operating and labor costs, a temporary rise in professional liability insurance costs and several underperforming contracts, among other things, strained Wellpath's finances, its chief restructuring officer said in a bankruptcy court filing in November 2024. He said Wellpath had already exited about 65 underperforming contracts between 2022 and mid-2024, especially with local governments, and had set out to reprice contracts across its portfolio.
