Laid off from Wellstar Health System.
Wellstar's reported layoffs in 2014, 2018 and 2026 came out of its corporate and administrative ranks, and in 2026 it said frontline care roles were left out. Even when it closed Atlanta Medical Center in 2022, it offered most of the hospital's staff jobs at other Wellstar sites.

The most recent Wellstar Health System layoff we've found
Wellstar's July 2026 cut was scheduled to take effect on September 26, 2026, the single separation date in Georgia's WARN record, which places every affected job at the company's Marietta address. Wellstar said neither its corporate office nor any of its hospitals would close, according to TheStreet, which reviewed the notice.
What Wellstar Health System layoffs have meant for employees
Wellstar judged the 2026 cut one department at a time, weighing how each supports patient care, how efficiently it runs and how it fits the structure Wellstar wants next, with industry benchmarks in the mix, WRDW reported. The line it drew ran through Wellstar Medical Group as well, where administrative roles were cut and frontline roles treating patients directly weren't. The stated aim was to simplify its structure, clarify roles, strengthen accountability and move decision-making closer to the people who care for patients, and its officials told Atlanta News First that AI wasn't the reason, calling the layoffs a way to streamline the workforce. Two days after the announcement, Wellstar told WSB-TV it was recalibrating its leadership structure to reduce administrative layers and that some leaders' roles were changing. If your title, team or manager changed after July 28, it's worth having the new role's pay, duties and reporting line confirmed in writing.
The same cut carries two dates. Wellstar announced it on Tuesday, July 28, and by the next day Atlanta News First was describing hundreds of employees as already without a job. Georgia's WARN record gives September 26, 2026 as the one expected date of separation, and TheStreet, which reviewed the notice, reported the same effective date. If you were among those cut and received separation paperwork, it's worth checking which of those dates it treats as your last day of employment, and what pay and benefits it says continue until then. If you were cut and enrolled in a Wellstar health plan, the date that coverage ends is worth confirming too, and how COBRA works explains continuation coverage. For a Georgia unemployment claim, the state's process is described in Georgia unemployment benefits.
The 2026 reduction was many times the size of the office cuts before it, the 2014 round the Atlanta Business Chronicle described and the 2018 restructuring Georgia Health News covered, though the system itself had grown from about 13,000 employees in 2014 to more than 35,000 by 2026. It also came as Wellstar was adding hospital capacity. Wellstar was preparing to open the 100-bed Wellstar Columbia County Medical Center in Grovetown and had agreed to acquire Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton, TheStreet reported. And unlike the 2020 furloughs, which Wellstar announced as temporary with health benefits kept, according to a May 2020 Georgia Health News report, the 2026 notice described a permanent cut with no bumping rights for the people in it.
In 2022, Wellstar's closings came with offers of other Wellstar jobs. Atlanta Medical Center's 2022 shutdown came with offers at other Wellstar facilities for most of the team and a job fair with more than 40 local employers, and its AMC questions page added that every employed primary care physician in the hospital's offices was offered a new location, with more than 70% accepting. When Wellstar announced that spring that its East Point campus would give up its emergency room and beds, its chief human resources officer said moving staff could all stay with Wellstar if they chose, GPB reported. The 2026 cut closed no hospital, by Wellstar's account to TheStreet, and the help it described to Atlanta News First was severance and resources. Neither that report nor the WRDW and TheStreet stories mentions offers of other Wellstar jobs for the people cut. If Wellstar offered you severance and another of its jobs interests you, consider asking Wellstar, in writing, what accepting it would mean for the severance. Negotiating a severance agreement sets out which terms people try to change.

What to do if you're laid off from Wellstar Health System
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Wellstar Health System's biggest hubs: Georgia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Wellstar Health System's hub states run: Georgia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Wellstar Health System layoff and severance questions
How many people did Wellstar lay off in 2026?
In July 2026 Wellstar put the number of positions being eliminated at 761, about 2% of its more than 35,000 employees, WRDW reported. Georgia's WARN record lists the same count at a single Marietta location, with one separation date, September 26, 2026.
What severance has Wellstar given laid-off employees?
For the July 2026 cut, Wellstar officials told Atlanta News First the system was providing severance and resources to affected employees, and that report gave no amount or formula. At the 2022 Atlanta Medical Center closing, Wellstar's AMC questions page listed job offers elsewhere in the system for most of the staff and a free Korn Ferry career transition program for team members and contract workers.
Did Wellstar lay off nurses and doctors in 2026?
Wellstar said frontline care team positions, including doctors, nurses and clinical staff who treat patients directly, weren't among the jobs cut in July 2026, WRDW reported, and the cut fell instead on corporate jobs, shared services and administrative roles in Wellstar Medical Group. In January 2018, Wellstar told Georgia Health News that none of the 49 jobs it eliminated involved direct patient care.
Were Augusta jobs part of the Wellstar layoffs?
Wellstar wouldn't tell WRDW how many of the 2026 cuts were in Augusta, home of Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center, one of its 11 Georgia hospitals, saying it hadn't released that level of detail. Georgia's WARN record lists one location for the whole layoff, the company's address in Marietta.
How many WARN notices has Wellstar filed?
Wellstar's own name is on three Georgia filings in our WARN tracker, with layoff dates in Marietta in 2016 for 521 jobs, at Atlanta Medical Center in 2022 for 124 and in Marietta in 2026. The tracker counts a fourth row toward Wellstar as well, an Augusta filing for 87 jobs with a 2014 layoff date, made by Georgia Regents Medical Center before that hospital came under Wellstar with AU Health in 2023.
