Laid off from Xerox.
Xerox's cuts land differently depending on where you sit. In Webster, outside Rochester, they've included plans to close whole operations. Lexmark, the Lexington printer maker, became part of Xerox in 2025, and its people were caught up in Xerox's cuts within months. Either way, it's a lot to absorb.

The most recent Xerox layoff we've found
Integrating Lexmark accounted for about 1,255 headcount reductions worldwide in 2026's first six months, 475 in the second quarter alone, Xerox's second-quarter 10-Q shows, and the Hartford Business Journal reported the figures on August 7. On July 30 Xerox had raised its Lexmark cost-synergy target to at least $350 million, its second-quarter release said.
What Xerox layoffs have meant for employees
The record splits into two stretches. In 2024 Xerox framed its planned workforce reduction as part of what its January 2024 release called its Reinvention, and since buying Lexmark it has tied its cuts to integrating the two companies, its 2025 annual report shows. That report describes the integration cuts as reaching across the combined organization, so they were set to reach people on the Xerox side too, not only people who came over with Lexmark.
Rochester has been watching Xerox shrink for years. Going by the Rochester Business Journal, the company's local workforce at the end of 2024 was well under half the size the paper gave in its May 2017 report. Most of the people still there worked in Webster in 2024, when about 360 of them were represented by Local 14A of Workers United, according to WXXI, so if you're a member, the union is who to ask about what the contract provides when a job goes. That's a long stretch of goodbyes for one area, and it's fine to feel it. For a claim in New York, the state's rules are at New York unemployment benefits.
For Lexington, Lexmark's hometown since IBM's printer division became its own company, the deal changed more than who owns the business. In February 2026, the same week company officials confirmed a round of layoffs at Lexmark, a Lexington developer confirmed it had bought 22 acres of Lexmark's campus at Newton Pike and New Circle Road for $6.3 million, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported, and a city spokeswoman said the city hadn't yet received a WARN notice. If that round reached you, it's worth keeping the notification date and every document you were handed. If you're filing in Kentucky, there's more on Kentucky unemployment benefits, and if your health coverage ended with the job, on how COBRA works.
Xerox's filings describe the cuts by what they were meant to save. The annual report put about half of that year's restructuring actions toward selling, administrative and general costs and about 45% toward gross margin, and expected those actions to bring about $115 million in annualized pre-tax savings beginning in 2026. Its second-quarter 10-Q weighted that quarter's actions much the same way, about half toward those costs and about 40% toward gross margin. In July 2026 Xerox raised its savings target for the Lexmark deal, its second-quarter release said, and the 10-Q says worldwide headcount held near 23,000 through June, with increases during the year largely offset by workforce reductions. The company has also said it's outsourcing and offshoring some functions, per the Hartford Business Journal, and the 10-Q books contractual severance for employees moved to third-party providers under a shared-service arrangement. If you're offered a transfer to one of those providers, it's worth asking whether any severance comes with the move.
Xerox's statements about its cuts have promised support in general terms. That January 2024 release committed to transition support, the annual report says reductions go through consultation with works councils and employee representative bodies where they exist and that Xerox will meet every required notification, and its statements on the 2025 and 2026 rounds said the company is committed to treating affected employees with dignity and respect. If you're facing a cut now, it's worth asking whether the outplacement and counseling Xerox offered in 2024 are on offer to you, and for how long.
If you worked out of the Norwalk headquarters or reported into it, you were part of a group a Xerox spokesperson put at nearly 200 people in August 2026, and Connecticut's claim rules are at Connecticut unemployment benefits. If you're weighing a separation offer, it's worth reading up on negotiating severance before you answer. The names to try in our WARN tracker for older filings are Xerox Corporation and Lexmark International.

What to do if you're laid off from Xerox
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Xerox's biggest hubs: New York, Kentucky. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Xerox's hub states run: New York, Kentucky, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Xerox layoff and severance questions
What severance has Xerox given laid-off employees?
No company-wide severance formula for Xerox layoffs appears in its 2025 annual report or in the reporting we track. For Webster workers in Local 14A, Workers United's Gary Bonadonna Jr. said in 2024 that the union contract provides severance to workers who leave voluntarily and supplemental income after an involuntary layoff, according to the Rochester Business Journal. If you're covered by that contract, the union can tell you how those terms work for your role.
Did Lexmark employees keep their severance terms after Xerox bought Lexmark?
For 12 months after the deal closed, Xerox agreed with Lexmark's seller to give people employed by Lexmark at closing severance benefits no lower than before, unless an individual agreement, a union contract or the law said otherwise, and to credit their Lexmark service, the December 2024 purchase agreement says. It also says no third party can enforce those terms. If you came from Lexmark, were cut within that year and received severance, it's worth checking whether it matched Lexmark's pre-deal terms.
Did Xerox file WARN notices for its 2025 and 2026 layoffs?
After examining its October 2025 reduction by jurisdiction, Xerox concluded it didn't meet New York's criteria for a WARN filing, a spokesperson said in the Rochester Business Journal, and in August 2026 a spokesperson gave the Hartford Business Journal the same conclusion for Connecticut. None of the filings our WARN tracker matches to the Xerox and Lexmark names dates from 2025 or later.
Why is Xerox laying off employees?
Xerox's 2024 cuts came with a new operating model to further its Reinvention, its January 3, 2024 release said, and a spokesperson tied the February 2026 layoffs to integrating the two companies, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported. Alongside job cuts, in August 2026 Xerox said it was consolidating operations, outsourcing and offshoring some functions, leaving selected product lines and markets and shrinking its real estate, the Hartford Business Journal reported.
