Laid off from 10 Roads Express.
This Iowa mail hauler lived on Postal Service contracts, and so did its jobs. Contracts lost in 2023 and 2025 took people at those sites with them. Then, the company said, the agency changed how it moved mail and it couldn't shrink far enough, so it closed altogether in 2026.

What 10 Roads Express layoffs have meant for employees
The Postal Service was 10 Roads' primary customer, Trucking Dive reported, and the money shows how exposed these jobs were. In 2022 alone the agency awarded the company more than $700.4 million in contracts, FreightWaves reported, and a law firm's list ranked it the second-largest postal contractor that fiscal year. At Fort Worth in 2023 that exposure showed up as timing, with the company saying it gave staff "as much notice as is practicable" once contracts were canceled or weren't renewed. If you drove or dispatched out of a terminal that depended on a few postal contracts, your last day could depend on a contract's calendar more than on anything you could see at work.
The company's account of the end is that its customer changed how it moves mail. It described more brokers, more work brought in-house, and a business that couldn't "reduce its platform enough to make continued operations sensible," in the statement Virginia Business quoted. Outside records show both practices in general terms. The Postal Service had diverted some over-the-road spending to the freight brokerage market, FreightWaves reported in 2023. The agency insourced 41 Highway Contract Route contracts between fiscal 2022 and 2024 and expected to insource more, a March 2025 inspector general audit said, adding that it evaluates insourcing as such contracts expire. That audit covers a pilot program, so it shows the practice rather than which contracts 10 Roads lost.
State notices show only part of the closing. The four December filings in our WARN tracker cover 283 jobs and Iowa's WARN log adds 42 at Carter Lake, against the roughly 2,000 the company counted, and its website listed 36 terminals. So a job count on a notice isn't the size of this layoff, and a terminal missing from those records still closed with the rest. If you worked in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Illinois or Iowa, our unemployment page for that state is a place to start.
Even at a site with a notice, the last day wasn't one day. Illinois split Homewood's 55 layoffs into 44 in January and 11 in February. Tampa's job list held 79 drivers, each dated January 30, yet Florida's letter allowed separations through February 28, the outside date Virginia's notice gave Harrisonburg too. If you were an American Postal Workers Union member kept past January 30, the benefits date in the APWU's deal came before your last day, which makes that date worth having in front of you as you go through your final pay and coverage.
Bumping rights, as Florida's letter describes them, let a worker displace someone more junior, which leaves little to reach for when a whole company closes. Illinois marked both a union and bumping rights on its January 2025 report and neither for Homewood's closing, and in Tampa the letter kept the union's system in place only "leading up to the closure." The closing deal on record is the APWU's, and the union says its most-favored-nations clause was there to ensure "equal terms" if anyone else was offered a bigger bonus.
On the company's telling, the work it lost went to brokers and to the Postal Service itself. If you're looking to stay with mail, the audit's line that management "must insource HCR contracts at pilot sites and hire its own drivers" makes the agency's own driving jobs a lead worth weighing, though that's a March 2025 description of a pilot rather than a list of openings.
