Layoffs in Florida.
Florida's layoffs concentrate where its money does, airlines, hotels, hospitals and the service chains that feed more than 140 million visitors a year. The state adds nothing to federal notice law, and its benefit checks are among the smallest anywhere, which makes speed the whole game after a Florida job ends.

Where Florida layoffs have been concentrated
The event dominating the current record is Spirit Airlines unwinding across its home state, 2,529 jobs noticed in Fort Lauderdale, 796 in Orlando, 551 in Dania Beach, nearly four thousand Florida aviation jobs from one carrier's collapse into restructuring. Airline economics arrive fast and land hard here, because the carriers are hometown employers in a way they are almost nowhere else.
Beneath the headline event runs the churn Florida's service economy produces on its own. One Conduent notice last June reached 39 Florida locations at once, the outsourcing contractor's statewide remote workforce reduced in a single filing, and a Boeing filing spread across 25 Space Coast sites in job counts as small as one or three. Optometry chains, home health agencies and medical clinics fill the rest of the log, healthcare consolidation working through a state that skews old.
And logistics keeps growing its share, Amazon noticed 616 jobs in Homestead and another 494 in Port Saint Lucie this year, while Kroger wound down a 935-worker fulfillment operation in Groveland, the grocery-delivery bet unwinding statewide. Remember through all of it that notices capture only the biggest events, in a state built on small employers, most Florida layoffs never generate paperwork at all.
The companies that keep filing in Florida
Counting by notice rather than by location, Florida's repeat filers are medical and staffing companies whose separate rounds keep clearing the threshold. Most notices since 2023.
- Stryker Employment Company, LLC · 7 notices since 2023
- Wells Fargo · 6 notices since 2023
- CHG Healthcare Services, Inc. · 5 notices since 2023
- MV Transportation · 3 notices since 2023
- Spirit Airlines · 3 notices since 2023
- Bahama Breeze · 3 notices since 2023
- VSP Optical Group, Inc. · 3 notices since 2023
- vitaCare Prescription Services, Inc. · 3 notices since 2023
Stryker's seven and Wells Fargo's six describe the same thing from different industries, medical devices and banking each running multi-year consolidations in increments too small for headlines. Worth contrasting with the single-notice giants above them, one Conduent filing touched more Florida locations than Stryker's seven notices combined, which is exactly why counting locations as filings misleads.
What notice Florida workers actually get
Florida layers nothing over the federal notice act. Thirteen states run mini-WARN acts, and Florida is not among them, so the federal WARN act's rules are the whole rulebook, 100-plus employers, 60 days of notice, and thresholds that leave most service-industry cuts legally silent.
One federal wrinkle matters more here than almost anywhere. WARN carries a natural-disaster exception, and hurricanes are its textbook case. What that exception does is commonly misunderstood, though, including by employers. It shortens notice, it does not cancel it. The regulation requires an employer relying on it to give as much notice as is practicable, with a brief statement of the reason the period was reduced, and for a disaster the rule says notice must still be given, in advance or after the fact. If a storm closed your worksite and no notice ever came with a stated reason, that is worth asking about rather than assuming the hurricane settled it.
What Florida does do is publish. FloridaCommerce releases each notice it receives, the feed behind this page, and the state's CareerSource centers run re-employment services for covered events.
What happens after a WARN notice is filed in Florida
Covered notices route through FloridaCommerce and trigger outreach from the local CareerSource board, whose usefulness varies by region but whose retraining referrals are the doorway to federally funded programs either way.
The state calls its unemployment system Reemployment Assistance, and the rebrand is the friendliest thing about it. Benefits sit among the smallest and shortest in the country, which changes the math of everything that follows a Florida layoff, the check is a supplement to urgency, not a runway. File before the week is out, and treat the budget arithmetic as the first task rather than an eventual one.
If a covered Florida employer cut 50-plus at your site with no notice and no disaster behind it, the federal remedy still exists, a 60-day back-pay claim pursued in federal court, and the size tests are the first thing any employment lawyer will run. For the majority of Florida cuts, too small for federal WARN, the claim and the job search are the whole playbook.
Use what Florida owes you
- File for Reemployment Assistance within days of the last shift, through our Florida page, because the benefit is small enough that missed weeks hurt double.
- Budget against Florida's real numbers before touching savings, the calculator plus the benefit figures on our state page tell you your true runway, and it is shorter here than the same salary would earn elsewhere.
- Hospitality and airline workers, your recall rights and severance live in whatever agreement or handbook covered you, not in state law, so read the exit paperwork closely before signing anything.
- If a hurricane closure took the job, document the timeline anyway. The disaster exception is real but not automatic, and whether your employer qualifies for it is a legal question, not a given.
- Space Coast and defense workers, program-end layoffs cycle here, and CareerSource's dislocated-worker funding covers exactly that pattern, worth claiming between contracts.
The biggest layoffs in Florida's record
Florida's 2020 stands alone in our records for concentration of pain. 1,309 notices listing 181,406 jobs hit in a single year, theme parks, cruise operators, hotels and every business attached to them, the deepest tourism shutdown any state absorbed. Only California listed more jobs that year, across an economy twice the size.
The recovery years tell the quieter story, roughly 200 to 270 filings annually since, a steady simmer of contract turnover and consolidation rather than another spike. Our Florida records reach back to 2015, deep enough to hold the before, the catastrophe, and the after.
The through-line is exposure. Florida's biggest employers sell discretionary travel, and when Americans stop flying, the state's WARN log fills within weeks. Anyone building a Florida career inside that machine is carrying more layoff risk than the same job would carry inland, and the state's thin benefits mean the fall is harder too.
Common questions
What companies are laying off workers in Florida?
The largest reported rounds of the past year came from Spirit Airlines, Kroger Fulfillment Network LLC, Spirit Airlines, and the filings in the rail of this page update weekly as the state publishes new ones. The WARN tracker is searchable for any employer.
How much notice does an employer have to give for layoffs in Florida?
Only what federal WARN requires, 60 days from employers with 100-plus workers making cuts that clear federal thresholds. Florida has no state notice law of its own, and smaller cuts, which dominate this economy, require no warning at all.
Does Florida require severance pay after a layoff?
No. Nothing in Florida law creates a severance right, in a layoff or otherwise. Whatever lands in front of you exists because a company policy or a negotiation put it there, and its own terms are the whole story.
Can my Florida employer lay me off with no warning after a hurricane?
They can shorten the notice, but the exception doesn't erase the duty. An employer relying on the natural-disaster exception must still give as much notice as is practicable and say why the period was cut, and for disasters the regulation says notice is owed even after the fact. Whether a specific closure qualifies at all is a fact question worth a lawyer's read.
Where can I see WARN notices filed in Florida?
FloridaCommerce publishes them, and the rail on this page pulls from that log as it refreshes each week. Our tracker carries Florida's record back to 2015, searchable by company.
Why does Florida unemployment pay so little after a layoff?
The state legislature sets both the weekly cap and the duration, and Florida has kept both near the national floor for years. The layoffs page you're on can't change that, but our Florida unemployment page lays out the actual numbers so the budget math starts honest.
