Recent Aramark layoffs
Compass Group rehired about 400 of Aramark's 900-plus Kentucky workers
Aramark's food and concessions work at the University of Kentucky ended on June 30, 2026, and Compass Group took the site under a new vendor arrangement. By July 10 the Lexington Herald-Leader counted about 400 of the more than 900 laid-off workers rehired, and the university said the new company was focused on full-time workers rather than students or part-time employees. Our tracker holds the April 29 Kentucky filing at 923 jobs.

Aramark layoff history
The notice in your hand says Aramark, but the reductions on this record ended at one address rather than across the company. Aramark staffs other organizations' kitchens, hospitals, campuses and stadiums, and in each of the layoffs documented below a client moved the work to a different vendor. Our tracker holds 259 all-time Aramark filings, and 9 covering 2,484 jobs since the start of 2025 across seven states, with 7 of those filings and 1,398 jobs in 2026. The rest of the recent run is smaller and just as local, 170 jobs at Plainfield, Illinois, 137 in Detroit, 108 at Vail, Arizona. Your own notice names a site and a reason, and that pair is worth reading first.
The two biggest recent notices were both universities. A Florida filing dated April 8, 2025 covering 949 jobs was the University of South Florida, where Aramark lost the school's contract. A Kentucky filing dated April 29, 2026 covering 923 jobs was the University of Kentucky, where a letter that day said Aramark wouldn't be retained to provide food and concessions service beyond June 30, 2026. The university said it had given Aramark 180 days of notice under the contract. The letter to the workers was dated April 29 for employment ending June 30.
What decides how a contract loss actually lands is whether the next operator hires you, and Kentucky is the one handoff here with a measured answer. The university said the intent of any new partner would be to hire those impacted, subject to that partner's employment policies. Under the school's new vendor arrangement, Compass Group had rehired about 400 of the more than 900 laid-off workers by July 10, 2026, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Asked whether the rest would be brought back, the university said it wasn't certain, and that the new company was focused on retaining full-time workers rather than students or part-time employees. Aramark's own notice had said most displaced workers typically have continued employment opportunities with the incoming service provider.
The other two handoffs carry that same expectation with no count behind it. At South Florida the university said its new vendor was giving employees losing their jobs an opportunity to stay on. At Western Washington in 2023, where Aramark filed for 386 permanent layoffs in Bellingham, both the company and the university described an opportunity to apply with the incoming provider. Only Kentucky has a number.
The corporate filings describe something different from the event in your notice. Aramark reported about 278,390 employees at its October 3, 2025 year end, roughly 144,240 of them in its US food and support segment. In that same fiscal year the company approved headcount reductions to streamline operational and administrative functions and booked severance charges of $36.4 million against them, $6.6 million in the US segment and $29.8 million international, with $19.8 million still unpaid at year end. That note names no client and no site. On the February 2026 earnings call, chief executive John Zillmer said the company was seeing extraordinary client retention in both its US and international businesses, at levels it had never seen before at that point in the fiscal calendar. Both sit in the record, and neither is a statement about any single account.
So the useful questions are local ones. California's Labor Code carries the only transition right on this record, making a successor contractor keep covered employees for a 60-day period when they had worked the site four months or longer, offer the job in writing with at least ten days to decide, and keep people by seniority if it needs fewer. That chapter covers janitorial and building maintenance contracts, so it reaches a qualifying Aramark facilities crew and leaves dining hall work outside it, and the new contractor owes you neither your old wages nor your old benefits. Everywhere else, check your own state and city rules. Rapid Response is the federal machinery for layoffs like this, run by states and local workforce agencies with American Job Centers, and the Department of Labor tells workers to contact their state Dislocated Worker Unit. Start with your own paperwork, then your state's unit, then the incoming contractor's hiring manager, and if you're one of the roughly 39,000 Aramark employees under collective bargaining agreements in the US and Canada, your union contract before all of them.

How Aramark's layoffs compare to other companies
Compass Group took over the Kentucky site and rehired part of the crew there. In contract catering the name on the incoming contract is the employer you would be applying to, so it's worth learning that name before your last day.
What to do after being laid off from Aramark
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Aramark's biggest hubs: Florida, Kentucky, Illinois. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Aramark's hub states run: Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Aramark layoff and severance questions
Why did I get a WARN notice from Aramark if the company isn't shutting down?
Because Aramark's work sits inside somebody else's building. In each of the layoffs documented on this page a client picked a different vendor, and every Aramark job at that site ended while the company kept operating everywhere else. Our tracker holds 259 all-time Aramark filings and 9 covering 2,484 jobs since the start of 2025 across seven states. Check the site and the stated reason on your own notice, because that's what tells you which kind of reduction you're in.
Will the new food service company hire me?
Kentucky is the one handoff here with a count behind it. The university said the intent of any new partner would be to hire those impacted, subject to that partner's employment policies, and by July 10, 2026 about 400 of more than 900 had been rehired by Compass Group. The university said the new operator was focused on full-time workers rather than students or part-time employees, which matters if you were either. At South Florida and Western Washington the client or the company described an opportunity to apply, with no count of who was hired. Treat the incoming company as a separate employer, and ask it directly about pay, seniority and a start date.
Does Aramark pay severance when it loses a contract?
No per-worker terms for any of these handoffs are on record in the reporting we track, so the paperwork you were handed governs your case. What the company quantifies is corporate. Aramark booked severance charges of $36.4 million in fiscal 2025 for operational and administrative headcount reductions, $6.6 million of that in its US segment and $29.8 million international. That note names no site and draws no line to any client contract ending.
Can I transfer to another Aramark account instead?
It's been offered as help applying rather than as a transfer. When the Western Washington contract ended in 2023, Aramark said it was working with impacted employees to access other job opportunities within the company, which leaves the application with you. If you'd rather stay, ask your manager which nearby accounts are adding people while you're still on the payroll.
Does any law make the incoming contractor keep me?
That turns on where you work and what kind of work you do. The one statute on this record is California's, a Labor Code chapter that makes a successor contractor keep covered employees for a 60-day transition period, and it reaches only workers on a janitorial or building maintenance contract who had been at the site four months or longer. Dining hall work sits outside that chapter, and the chapter says nothing about any other state. If you worked somewhere else or did different work, check your own state and city law and your union contract rather than assuming it either way.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Aramark?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Aramark's biggest U.S. hubs are Florida, Kentucky, Illinois. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Aramark?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Aramark?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Aramark?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
