Laid off from HMSHost.
HMSHost runs airport restaurants on contracts that end. Workers furloughed in 2020 faced permanent layoffs that October unless recalled. Since 2023, some airport and airline contract changes moved its work to new operators, and offers varied, from all frontline staff at Dallas, by American's account, to open positions at Sarasota.

The most recent HMSHost layoff we've found
The airport authority extended one Orlando restaurant from Sept. 30 through Oct. 31, and a second would close that day, ending about 25 jobs by Nov. 13, an August 31, 2026 letter told Florida.
What HMSHost layoffs have meant for employees
A concession bid can give you months of warning that a surprise cost cut doesn't. Spokane's airport told KHQ it issued its request for proposals in July 2023, about eight months before the agreement expired on March 31, 2024. The Portland Press Herald reported the Jetport's award in March 2026 with changes starting after Sept. 15 and a full changeover taking 17 months. At Kansas City, the contract's end set the last day of operations, according to the Kansas City Business Journal. A bid doesn't settle who wins, though. Three master concessionaires vied for Portland's contract, HMSHost among them, so a bid can leave workers unsure whether their employer will stay. If your airport has a concession bid open, that timeline is worth following, because it shows roughly when the company you work for could change.
Who hires you afterward is the part HMSHost doesn't control. American's account in The Dallas Morning News is the strongest offer on record, with Compass offering every frontline worker at DFW a job and managers getting interviews. HMSHost's own language has been looser. At Charlotte it expected many workers to get offers, the Charlotte Observer reported. At Spokane and Sarasota it used nearly the same words, offers "as positions are available." Spokane's statement came before the airport had announced the new operator, so those workers had a layoff date before they had a company to apply to. That phrase describes an effort, and the hiring decision stays with the incoming company. The handovers left little room too. At Dallas the layoff dates opened Jan. 14 and Compass was working there by Jan. 15, and at Charlotte they opened March 3 with SodexoMagic due March 4. If an incoming company has been named at your airport, it's useful to find out early which of these outcomes applies to your job, since the wording has changed from one site to the next.
The firmer promises on record come from union contracts. UNITE HERE Local 5 told Hawaii members in 2020 that theirs gave them 365 days of recall by seniority, and Host International's Orlando letters left room for bumping among certain unionized employees. Local 23 represented many of Charlotte's lounge staff, and Local 362 represents most of those in Orlando's letters. If a union covers your job and your airport's concession is changing hands, whether recall or bumping still applies after the handover is a question for your local, since Local 5's account covers one contract in Hawaii and Orlando's letters cover those closings.
HMSHost said in a statement carried by FoodService Director that when travel collapsed it furloughed corporate and front-line staff and had expected to bring them back as business returned, until a new surge in cases stalled passenger traffic. Workers not recalled by Oct. 15, 2020, then faced permanent layoff. If you were furloughed that spring and not recalled, October is the date that moved you from furlough to layoff, and WFTV reported from Orlando in March 2021 that former employees were being invited back months after it.
Orlando's letters come under the name Host International, which matters if you're looking for your airport's filing in our WARN tracker. No story or state record we've seen connects Portland's filing to the Jetport contract, so that link stays open. A closing date in one of these letters can also move. Orlando's August letter shows it, since the airport authority granted one restaurant an extension. If you're planning around a last day there, that's a reason to expect the date could shift.

What to do if you're laid off from HMSHost
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. HMSHost's biggest hubs: Florida, California, New Jersey, Washington. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what HMSHost's hub states run: Florida, California, New Jersey, Washington, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
HMSHost layoff and severance questions
What severance has HMSHost given laid-off employees?
The letters and reporting we track give no severance formula or amount for HMSHost. The one payment on record is a vacation payout, which UNITE HERE Local 5 said in October 2020 belonged on Hawaii members' unemployment claims. The union added that a payout already reported could be described to the unemployment office as severance pay due to a total layoff.
Did HMSHost call back workers it laid off in 2020?
In Orlando it said it did. HMSHost told WFTV in March 2021 that it had been inviting former airport employees back for three to four weeks and planned to offer all of them work when financially possible, though some workers claimed new hires came first. In Hawaii, UNITE HERE Local 5 said its contract required recall by seniority for 365 days before anyone new was hired.
Why did HMSHost lay off workers at American Airlines lounges?
American made that decision. A spokeswoman told The Dallas Morning News the airline regularly evaluates its partners for value and had "elected to wind down" its work with HMS Host, moving DFW's lounges to Compass. Charlotte's two Admirals Clubs went to SodexoMagic, the Charlotte Observer reported.
Are the Orlando airport layoffs at HMSHost permanent?
The restaurant closings are described as permanent in Host International's letters, with employees to be terminated. Those letters said non-union employees have no bumping rights and that certain unionized employees may have them under their contract.
Did the Avolta takeover cause HMSHost layoffs?
HMSHost is part of Avolta, formerly Dufry Group, the Charlotte Observer reported. No letter or story we track ties a layoff notice to that ownership change. For example, HMSHost told the Business Observer that Sarasota's contract was changing operators, and Orlando letters describe restaurants closing.
