Laid off from Tractor Supply.

If your Petsense store was on the 2026 closing list, Tractor Supply said it would work to move you to another Petsense or Tractor Supply store wherever it could. Whether that's a fair trade comes down to the drive, the hours and the pay, and what leaving would bring.

What Tractor Supply layoffs have meant for employees

For anyone whose store made the list, it's a rough way to find out a plan was being drawn up around them, and it may help to know how the company explained the cut. Chief executive Hal Lawton told analysts, as Pet Age reported, that the stores being shut had negative four-wall cash flow and that shutting them would let the company reinvest that money in its core business. The company's quarterly report traces the plan to a review of the whole chain's operations and outlook, approved by management in fiscal 2026's second quarter. That explanation is about store cash flow, which is worth holding onto if the news landed personally.

About 26,000 of Tractor Supply's team members were part-time at the end of 2025 by the count in its annual report, alongside about 26,000 full-time. If you were part-time and a transfer is on the table, it's worth asking whether it would keep your hours, and whether anything offered to departing staff reaches part-time workers as well. A new schedule can matter as much as a new address if you've built other work, school or family care around the hours you had. The same report describes an employee stock purchase plan and a 401(k) for eligible team members. If your job is ending and you were enrolled in either plan, you can ask how your shares or balance are handled and by what date anything has to be done.

Tractor Supply has moved and sold operations before. To win FTC approval for its October 2022 purchase of Orscheln Farm and Home, it had to sell 85 of the 166 stores it bought, 73 to Bomgaars and 12 to Buchheit, according to its fiscal 2023 10-K, and it separately sold Orscheln's Moberly headquarters and distribution center to Bomgaars in 2023. There, and in the Braselton, Georgia move announced in 2012, the company pointed people toward work somewhere else, with the buyer or at another Tractor Supply site, alongside severance for those who left, as ABC17 and the Barrow Journal described at the time. If you're weighing a transfer against leaving, it's worth asking for the leaving side in the same detail, what severance would come to, what you'd be asked to sign for it, and whether turning down a transfer changes either answer. A transfer to a store an hour away isn't much of a choice for someone without a reliable car or with children in school nearby, and it's fair to say so plainly and ask what the alternative looks like. If your job moves to a buyer instead, as the Orscheln warehouse jobs were set to do, you can ask whether your start date, pay and paid time off carry over.

If you're trying to work out whether a notice was ever filed for your site, you can search our WARN tracker under Petsense, Orscheln and Tractor Supply and then match the city and date. The tracker counts notices filed by businesses Tractor Supply owns today, including ones filed before it bought them, so an old Orscheln or VIP Petcare notice sits under the Tractor Supply name. Georgia's records keep only the date people left, so the 2013 Braselton row there marks the layoff rather than the day a notice was filed. For unemployment, our state unemployment benefits pages cover how each state handles a claim.

The company that shrank Petsense kept opening stores of its own. In the quarter the closing plan was approved, Tractor Supply opened 28 new stores under its own name and three new Petsense stores, its second-quarter release shows, and that quarter's results carried acquisition costs for VIP Petcare, a mobile veterinary care business it lists among its brands. Lawton said 2027 would bring 85 to 90 new Tractor Supply stores, fewer than the 100 the company had once set as its goal. If you'd like to stay with the company, it's fair to ask whether any nearby Petsense or Tractor Supply store has a role for you, and if a transfer is offered, when it would start.
