Laid off from Transdev.

Several of Transdev's 2025 and 2026 layoff notices followed bus contracts ending with cities and transit agencies. Some of those agencies chose another company and others moved the work onto their own payroll, and Transdev's letters to three states expected the next employer to take on most of the workers.

What Transdev layoffs have meant for employees

If your depot's contract is moving, a Transdev layoff notice marks the end of Transdev as your employer, and the job itself may carry on under someone else. The Everett letter, the Rochester letter and the South Daytona letter each said the company had learned its contract would end and that the facility would close that day, and each said it expected the new operator to "hire most if not all of the workers." That expectation was Transdev's, and the hiring belonged to whoever took over. Fargo's switch shows how long the in-between can run, with Transdev staff told in late July, city applications opening October 3, unsuccessful applicants told November 21 and city employment starting December 22, The Forum reported. If another job offer comes up in that stretch, Transdev's separation date and the incoming employer's hiring decision run on separate clocks, so an offer elsewhere can be weighed against both dates.

In these notices, a closure marked Transdev leaving a site. California typed the 2026 Antioch and Visalia notices as permanent closures, and the Everett, Rochester and South Daytona letters each said the facility would close permanently. Community Transit planned to run Everett's commuter buses itself, Volusia County had approved RATP Dev to run Votran, and in Rochester Transdev's letter expected a new operator to hire most of the workers. The Antioch and Visalia notices are both dated late April, earlier than Keolis's May 13 release, which pledged a smooth transition for Tri Delta Transit's existing workforce, and earlier than the May 18 agenda in TCRTA’s board packet, in which agency staff recommended Via.

When an agency takes the buses back, the job can return on different terms. Fargo's transit director wrote that without Transdev the city wouldn't be subject to union restrictions, which she said would allow more flexible scheduling, and the city trimmed its full-time openings after budget cuts forced a service reduction, the Forum reported. Matbus also said some of the drop among Transdev's drivers came from retirements and departures that had nothing to do with the switch. Community Transit said running the service itself would cost somewhat more but give it a fully integrated operation, and it offered Transdev's coach cleaners, a job the agency contracts out, a place at the front of the line for coach operator jobs if they met the requirements and took the training, The Herald reported. For anyone weighing an agency job against a Transdev union contract, Fargo is a case on record where the new employer said union restrictions wouldn't apply.

Long tenure didn't protect these contracts. Community Transit had contracted out its commuter buses since the 1980s, Fargo had used a contractor for its drivers since 1997 and Transdev since at least 2006, and First Transit's partnership with Tri Delta Transit went back to 1986, a 2016 release Mass Transit carried said. In Everett and Fargo the call to end the arrangement was the agency's, and each chose to run the buses itself.

In the audited filings, the filer name wasn't always Transdev's. The company's 2025 notices in Florida and Idaho came from local companies called Transit Management of Volusia County, of Ada County and of Canyon County. Those names belong in any tally of Transdev's notices, as do First Transit's and older filings under Veolia Transportation, a renamed predecessor in Transdev's North American business. In Everett, Community Transit said in July 2026 that its separate DART paratransit contract with Transdev wasn't ending, the Herald reported, so the notice there covered the commuter work and not the paratransit service.

What to do if you're laid off from Transdev

Transdev layoff and severance questions

What severance has Transdev given laid-off employees?

Transdev's Washington letter, Minnesota letter and Florida letter about its 2025 and 2026 closings don't mention severance pay. Each says the union will administer any bumping rights under its collective bargaining agreement.

Will Transdev workers keep their jobs when a contract changes hands?

Not automatically. Fargo said it had no obligation to hire every Transdev driver and turned about four or five away, The Forum reported, and Community Transit said the reasons Transdev staff might not move over could include a lack of interest or not meeting its qualifications, with some office roles duplicating its own, The Herald reported.

Is First Transit part of Transdev?

Yes. Transdev’s announcement of March 7, 2023 said its purchase of First Transit was complete and the two companies would operate under the Transdev brand. First Transit, Inc. still filed a 194-job closure notice in Antioch, California in April 2026, the state’s WARN report shows.

Why did Fargo and Community Transit end their Transdev contracts?

The agencies gave their own reasons. Fargo projected the Matbus cities would save nearly $2.5 million the next year by hiring drivers directly and pointed to scheduling and driver benefits, The Forum reported. Community Transit said the cost advantages of contracting had diminished once many commuter buses switched to local service as light rail opened in Lynnwood, The Herald reported.
