Laid off from Republic Services.

Republic Services' recent cuts in Florida landed on people whose work was handed to another company. In Hudson and St. Augustine, Republic said its yards would keep running around them, and the question of where the crews would work next turned to the hauler taking over.

The most recent Republic Services layoff we've found

In October 2025, Republic said its notice for the Hudson, Florida yard was wrong to say the site would close. The layoffs fell on crews collecting Hernando County's residential waste, which the county had awarded to Coastal Waste & Recycling on a seven-year contract starting January 1, Republic told the Business Observer. Hudson would keep its commercial and industrial customers there and every customer in Pasco County.

What Republic Services layoffs have meant for employees

A lost contract is a hard kind of layoff to argue with. The work doesn't go away; the contract for it goes to another hauler, and the crews who did it are out. Both Florida cuts on record had that shape, by Republic's own account in its May 2024 notice for St. Augustine and in what its spokesperson told the Business Observer about Hudson.

Hernando County's decision turned on price, its commissioners said when they chose Coastal in May 2025. Coastal had the lowest of five bids and edged Republic on the county's scoring, 73.2 to 72.3, the Hernando Sun reported, and one commissioner told Republic he'd have voted for it had its price been on top, calling its work a pretty good job overall. At the same meeting, Republic's general manager asked that Coastal hold off hiring his employees until the contract ran out on December 31, saying he wanted to move as many as he could to the new hauler then, but not before. So a crew can do the work well and still lose it, and the contract's end date sets the calendar. In Hernando, the vote came in May and Republic's contract ran through December, a long stretch to plan around for anyone who knew the cut was coming. If your county has rebid its trash pickup, it's worth asking Republic in writing whether leaving before the last day would change anything you'd otherwise receive.

Union coverage changes what a cut looks like. The Hudson notice and the St. Augustine one both said the affected workers had no union and no bumping rights, the right to avoid termination by displacing another employee, so nobody laid off there could keep a job by taking someone else's. About 22% of Republic's workforce was covered by a union contract when 2025 ended, its annual report says, and where a contract applies, its layoff terms can decide who keeps working, which is how Republic told KTNV it handled the Las Vegas cuts of 2020. Teamsters Local 631 saw that episode differently, saying the short-term offer it turned down would have meant more people laid off and more hours cut. If you're in a bargaining unit, it's worth asking your steward what the contract says about layoff order and recall.

Office and support staff have a separate history, and it lives in Republic's annual reports. Its 2016 Form 10-K counted severance among that year's restructuring charges, and its 2020 Form 10-K is where the July 2020 back-office cuts are recorded. The restructuring line in its latest results is a different kind. The $20 million it recorded for 2025 went mainly to a new accounts receivable system, and it expected about $25 million in 2026 for that work and for converting the general ledger, budgeting and procurement systems of its environmental solutions segment. If you were in a corporate or customer service role, those reports are where Republic has described its cuts, so they're worth reading alongside any letter you get.

If you want to see whether a site you worked at has a notice on file, our WARN tracker searches by company name and state. Republic's filings can sit under Republic Services, Republic Services of Florida, Allied Waste, Rainbow Disposal or FCR, so it's worth searching each name and then matching the city and date. FCR, LLC sits on Republic's Exhibit 21.1 subsidiary list, and North Carolina's 2025 WARN listing shows the Charlotte notice under that name.

Republic Services layoff and severance questions

How many WARN notices has Republic Services filed?

Our WARN tracker holds 11 filings matching Republic across every year it covers. Two are from 2025 and together cover 142 jobs, one filed in Hudson, Florida and one in Charlotte, North Carolina.

What severance has Republic Services given laid-off employees?

Republic's Florida notices, the 2024 St. Augustine letter and the 2025 Hudson letter, give dates and job counts but no severance terms. The clearest figure is company-wide, the $40.7 million Republic booked as restructuring charges for 2016, which the 2016 annual report said included severance and other termination benefits. If you've been handed separation papers, it's worth asking HR whether a severance plan covers your job and what signing would release.

Will the new hauler hire laid-off Republic Services workers?

In both Florida handovers on record, Republic said the company taking over might take on some of its workers. Some might be offered jobs by the incoming contractor, its 2024 St. Augustine letter said, and Republic was in talks with Coastal Waste & Recycling about hiring as many as possible, the Business Observer reported. If your collection work is moving to another company, it's worth asking that company directly about openings, pay and start dates.
