Laid off from Community Health Systems.

By 2026 Community Health Systems was a fraction of its 2014 size, after years of selling hospitals. It also closed ShorePoint Health Venice in 2022, and a former worker sued, saying staff got no WARN notice. The notice, filed with Florida months later, listed furlough among the reasons.

The most recent Community Health Systems layoff we've found

On June 1, 2026, CHS completed the sale of four Northwest Arkansas hospitals and their outpatient centers to Freeman Health System for $110 million, after which its subsidiaries owned or leased 60 hospitals across 12 states, its June 1 release said.

What Community Health Systems layoffs have meant for employees

At the end of 2025 CHS employed less than half the workforce it had at the end of 2014, going by the year-end counts in its 2014 annual report and 2025 annual report, but that drop mixes people who moved to new owners along with their hospitals and people whose jobs ended, so it doesn't work as a layoff count. CHS announced plans in 2017 to sell 30 hospitals, Becker's Hospital Review reported, and was still selling in 2026, when the deal for four Northwest Arkansas hospitals brought about 2,200 employees to Freeman Health System, according to Talk Business & Politics, and a news release said the staff integration was continuing. If CHS sells the hospital where you work and the buyer offers to keep you on, it's worth asking the buyer how that offer handles pay, seniority, paid time off and severance.

How far ahead people learned of a closing has varied, from two months to about three and a half in the announcements WBBJ and WKMS reported. At ShorePoint Health Venice, the former employee's complaint disputed the end date CHS kept on paper, Nov. 22, alleging that workers had already been told to stop coming in and were no longer being paid, as Becker's Venice report described it. If you're at a hospital that's closing, the day you were told, your last shift and your last paycheck are worth writing down, since those are the dates the Venice complaint set against the official one.

At the Selmer and Kingston closings, the company pointed staff toward other jobs inside its own system. Tennova said it would help McNairy staff find jobs at its other hospitals in the region and had already held job fairs, and First Hospital's staff were encouraged to apply for open positions across Commonwealth Health, according to Becker's report on First Hospital. In Fulton, local officials said some medical workers might be able to relocate within CHS while janitors and cafeteria staff might be out of work. If you're in a support role at a CHS hospital that's closing, consider finding out early which openings in the system you'd qualify for and whether a move comes with any help.

By the end of 2025, union representation at CHS had shrunk to a handful of hospitals. The company counted employees represented by labor unions at three of its hospitals then, down from 32 hospitals at the end of 2014, according to those same annual reports. If a union contract covers your job, it's worth checking it for layoff, recall and severance terms.

The notices our tracker ties to CHS carry the names of the companies that ran each hospital, such as Fallbrook Hospital, Hospital of Fulton and Venice HMA, rather than Community Health Systems, and two carry the HMA name of Health Management Associates, which CHS merged with in January 2014. A single hospital operation can file under several unit names, as Fallbrook's four notices for the hospital, its skilled nursing unit and its home health and hospice agency show. If you're looking for the notice that covered your workplace, our WARN tracker is worth searching under your hospital's own name and its operating company. First Hospital's 2022 notice went to Pennsylvania regulators before the Pennsylvania records our tracker holds begin, so it isn't among the nine.

California unemployment benefits, Tennessee unemployment benefits, Kentucky unemployment benefits and Florida unemployment benefits cover the four states where those notices were filed, and unemployment benefits by state has the rest of the 12 states where CHS's June 2026 release says it operates.

What to do if you're laid off from Community Health Systems

Community Health Systems layoff and severance questions

What severance has Community Health Systems given laid-off employees?

The clearest terms on record come from McNairy Regional Hospital in Selmer, Tennessee, which CHS's 2014 annual report lists as owned. When its 2016 closing was announced, a Tennova release reported by WBBJ said staff who worked until the closing but weren't placed in new jobs would receive outplacement services and severance. If a closing comes with a condition like that, it's worth getting in writing what happens to the severance if you leave early for another job.

How many WARN notices has Community Health Systems filed?

Our WARN tracker counts 9 notices toward CHS, dated 2013 through 2023, with nothing since the start of 2025. They went in under the names of the hospital companies and units involved, four under Fallbrook names in California, two as Hospital of Fulton in Kentucky, and one each as McNairy Hospital Corporation, Venice HMA and Tennessee HMA Regional Service Center. That service center's notice dates from 2013, before CHS completed its HMA merger the following January, according to its 2014 annual report.

Did Community Health Systems give WARN notice before closing ShorePoint Health Venice?

A former employee's lawsuit, filed Aug. 29, 2022 and covered by Becker's Hospital Review, said it didn't, alleging that she and about 600 coworkers lost their jobs that August without written notice. The notice Venice HMA filed with Florida, received in February 2023 per our tracker, gave furlough, relocation and consolidation as its reasons and the number affected as "Unknown, enough jobs available to be below WARN 50," according to Florida's copy of the notice.
