Laid off from Avis Budget Group.

In 2020, Avis Budget Group reduced or furloughed most of its workforce, and an August notice to Wisconsin extended every furlough it listed indefinitely, saying any layoffs would be permanent. That year and in early 2026, it offered enhanced severance to employees who qualified and chose to leave.

The most recent Avis Budget Group layoff we've found

About 200 Americas employees had left Avis Budget through a voluntary termination program with enhanced severance by June 30, 2026, its second-quarter 10-Q says, and the company's Global Rightsizing program recorded $45 million in restructuring expense in the first half of that year.

What Avis Budget Group layoffs have meant for employees

Beyond the January reduction, management told investors on its February 2026 call which businesses it would keep evaluating through the year, naming package delivery, ride-hail and certain franchise activities among its non-core and adjacent operations. The restructuring money has also run far heavier in its International segment than in the Americas, with Avis Budget's 2025 10-K putting $105 million of the $117 million recorded under Global Rightsizing in 2025 on the international side. For anyone working in package delivery, ride-hail or franchise activities at Avis Budget, that review is a matter of public record, and it's worth keeping in mind if an outside offer comes along.

In the closings on record that say where the work went, it went to a site Avis Budget already ran, and Auto Rental News and an October 2009 report both had call center work going to Tulsa. Zipcar's corporate work was set to move to Parsippany in 2026, as the Boston Globe reported, and in each case the announced layoffs were in the office being closed. If your office is closing, whether a role, a transfer or relocation help follows the work decides whether the closing ends your job or moves it, and if a transfer is offered, moving is worth weighing against what leaving would pay.

Twice, Avis Budget has offered some people enhanced severance to leave voluntarily in the same stretch it was cutting others. During 2020 about 400 employees who qualified took a time-limited voluntary termination program, resigning from field operations, shared services and administrative jobs in exchange for enhanced severance that Avis Budget's 2020 10-K records. Early in 2026 its Americas business ran another for field and administrative employees, and the second-quarter 10-Q counts about 200 who had left through it by June 30. The 2020 program also took in shared services staff, while the 2026 one was run by the Americas segment. If one is offered where you work, the enhanced package goes only to those who qualify and sign up inside that window, which makes the window itself the thing to plan around.

Avis Budget's pandemic filings in our WARN tracker came in two waves, one in the spring and a second, with more notices, from late August into mid-September 2020. Together the two waves make up nearly all of its filings there. One letter from that second wave, Avis Budget's letter to Wisconsin, extended every listed worker's furlough indefinitely and said the notices to workers explained how to reach the state's unemployment office, which shows that some late-2020 filings recorded extended furloughs, so those rows can't be treated as permanent layoffs on their own. If you were furloughed in 2020 and later received one of these notices, it may have extended your furlough rather than ended the job.

Union coverage also shapes how a cut lands at Avis Budget. About 30% of its employees were under union or similar agreements as 2025 ended. The same 10-K says those contracts and government rules affect pay, job retention rights and pensions, while most staff in the Americas are at-will. For union-represented staff, a contract's job retention terms are part of the picture, and the Wisconsin letter, by contrast, listed neither a union nor bumping rights for its workers. If the Avis Budget job you lost was in Florida, Texas or California, the states with the most Avis Budget rows in our tracker, or in New Jersey, where it has its headquarters, our pages on Florida unemployment, Texas unemployment, California unemployment and New Jersey unemployment cover what each state pays.

What to do if you're laid off from Avis Budget Group

Avis Budget Group layoff and severance questions

What severance has Avis Budget Group given laid-off employees?

It has depended on the program. The December 2020 8-K describes a plan giving U.S. executives in Grades A and B two years or one year of base pay plus a prorated bonus if they're let go without cause and sign a release. Voluntary exit programs offered enhanced severance in 2020, per the 2020 10-K, and in early 2026, per the second-quarter 10-Q, and Auto Rental News reported that in 2009 the company offered Fredericton's call center staff severance along with benefits, training and outplacement support.

Did Avis Budget Group lay off employees in 2026?

Yes. Avis Budget carried out a global reduction in force in January, management said on the company's earnings call that February, and it told Boston's mayor it would lay off 126 Zipcar employees as it moved to close Zipcar's headquarters there, the Boston Globe reported. Management didn't give a headcount for the January reduction, and a voluntary exit program in the Americas that quarter had taken about 200 people by June 30, according to the second-quarter 10-Q.

How many Avis Budget Group employees were furloughed in 2020?

By April 22, 2020, Avis Budget had reduced or furloughed about 70% of its global workforce, some 21,000 people, according to a company release that day. The release gave furloughs and other reductions as one combined figure, without a furlough-only count.

Is Zipcar shutting down?

Not according to Avis Budget, which said closing Zipcar's Boston headquarters "does not represent a closure of the Zipcar business" and that field and fleet operations teams would stay in Boston, the Boston Globe reported. Separately, management said on its Q4 2025 earnings call that Avis Budget had decided in December 2025 to exit Zipcar UK.

How many WARN notices has Avis Budget Group filed?

Avis Budget companies have 83 filings in our WARN tracker, made under names including Avis Budget Car Rental, Avis Budget Group, AB Car Rental Services and Zipcar, and 76 of them date from 2020. Only one is from 2025 or later, Zipcar's January 30, 2026 Boston notice for 65 jobs.
