Laid off from Expedia.

Since 2024, Expedia's cuts have kept coming back to the people who build its products and keep its books, from mid-level staff to vice presidents. In 2025 and 2026 the cuts came with talk of new roles opening, which is cold comfort when yours is the one that closed.

What Expedia layoffs have meant for employees

Both of Expedia's 2026 notices to Washington ran from engineers up to vice presidents, so seniority didn't keep anyone off the list. Both letters, the January notice and the September notice, also said some of the cuts came from moving operations elsewhere or contracting them out, and that no union represents the people affected and no bumping rights exist, so tenure gave nobody a claim on a colleague's seat. The September letter said Expedia expected the state to redact each employee's name and address before posting the notice on its WARN database page. If you've been told your job is ending, you can ask whether yours is one of the roles being moved or contracted out, and whether going with the work was ever an option.

In 2025 and 2026 Expedia paired its cuts with talk of hiring. The company was "eliminating roles as well as opening some new roles" and "simplifying our structure and reducing organizational layers," a spokesperson told the Austin American-Statesman in February 2026. In April 2025 someone close to the company told Skift that some affected employees were moving to new teams rather than leaving, and in September 2026 an internal email in Springfield said some employees would move to new roles, managers and locations, the Springfield Daily Citizen reported. The company tied its openings to the skills it said it needs next, so an opening may call for different skills than the job that went. If you're on the leaving side, it's worth asking whether any of those openings fit you before your last day, and, if you've been offered severance, whether moving into one would change it.

Working remotely or outside Seattle didn't put anyone out of reach. The January notice counted a few Washington employees who worked remotely, the Austin offices near The Domain, home to about 1,800 Expedia employees in 2024, were part of that round, and the September email told finance staff their work would sit in fewer locations with no fully remote jobs. Springfield's office had already shrunk from about 1,100 people in 2022 to 910 in 2024, by a chamber of commerce survey. If you're remote and your role is being pulled into an office, you can ask whether relocating is on the table and, if exit terms are on offer, what turning the move down would mean for them. For benefits, our Washington unemployment benefits page covers Seattle and remote Washington staff, and the Texas and Missouri pages cover Austin and Springfield.

Expedia has been getting smaller for years. Its workforce numbered 25,400 at the end of 2019, Bloomberg reported as the February 2020 cuts began, and the reorganization that followed removed about 30% of it, Skift later wrote. The February 2024 round set out to shed 9% of the workforce, by the Statesman's account, and April 2025 took about 3% more. The latest annual report put the count near 16,000, Skift reported in August 2026. Most of the April 2025 cuts came in product and technology, and January's Seattle notice included product and technology titles.

Expedia's filings describe a restructuring program that began in 2024 and kept expanding, and its second-quarter 2026 report showed program charges of about $70 million in each year's first six months, 2025 and 2026 alike, mostly severance, stock-based compensation and benefits, with about $35 million more expected. That report gives totals, not what any one person got, so if you're offered a package, it's worth asking how many weeks of pay it includes, how long health coverage lasts and when it's paid.

Expedia layoff and severance questions

What severance has Expedia given laid-off employees?

Expedia's February 2020 packages came with extended health coverage, a person familiar with the cuts told Bloomberg. One Expedia employee's unverified post on Blind described pay through May 1, healthcare through May, travel and wellness bonuses and $1,000 toward a job-placement firm.

How much notice did Expedia give before its 2026 layoffs?

Expedia's January notice reached Washington's Employment Security Department on January 28 for separations from April 1 through April 19. Its September notice, received September 22, set a window running from November 21 to December 1 and said everyone affected was getting 60 days' notice or more before their termination dates.

Did Expedia's 2026 layoffs reach Austin and Springfield, Missouri?

Expedia planned 100 cuts at its Austin corporate offices near The Domain starting April 1, the Austin American-Statesman reported in February 2026. In Springfield, the September finance layoffs reached the local office, the Springfield Daily Citizen reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

What happens to my Expedia 401(k) if I'm laid off?

Company contributions generally vest after two years of credited service, according to the plan's 2025 annual report, and an outstanding plan loan comes due within 90 days of termination unless you keep paying by ACH, while your vested balance can come out as a lump sum or in part. The year-end true-up match goes to people employed on the plan year's last day unless an exception applies, so if your last day falls before December 31, it's worth asking the plan whether a layoff counts as one.
