Laid off from Adient.
Both explanations on record for Adient's US layoffs point to a customer. Adient tied a Missouri cut to a customer's production ending, and a union leader linked two Tennessee closings to lost GM seat work. Its restructuring filings, by contrast, describe job cuts primarily overseas.

The most recent Adient layoff we've found
In April 2026, Adient notified Tennessee that it would permanently close its Athens plant on June 30, 2026, a closing the state's WARN memo puts at 210 workers.
What Adient layoffs have meant for employees
Lexington went from expansion to closing notice in about five years. In January 2020, Governor Bill Lee announced that Adient would invest $23.5 million in its Lexington plant and planned to add about 330 jobs, its second expansion in Henderson County since 2018, according to Tennessee's economic development release. In April 2025, the state's Lexington memo recorded Adient's notice to close that plant for good on June 27, and an earlier Adient notice there, for 181 jobs in 2017, sits in our WARN tracker. If you're weighing a job at a plant Adient has just expanded, an announced hiring target describes the plan when it was made rather than how long the work will last.
The two explanations came from different places. At Riverside the reason was Adient's own, written into the WARN notice KSHB reported on. For the two Tennessee plants set to close in June 2025, it came from a UAW chapter president speaking to WSMV, and Adient didn't respond to the station's requests for comment. A reason written into the company's own notice is part of the record the state keeps, while a union official's account is one side of the story. If you're judging how exposed your own plant is, it's worth finding out which customers your line builds seats for and how long that work is set to run.
Adient's filings count its cuts by plan and by region. Its December 2023 quarterly report gave a company-wide tally of jobs and plants in its restructuring plans and named the Americas among the regions in that quarter's new plan, while its Form 8-K and the June 2026 quarterly report set out the later plans by region and by charge. A charge in a plan like that can cover people in many countries at once, so a big number in a filing says little about whether your plant is in it. Tennessee's memos work at the other end of the scale, giving one plant's address, its closing date and the number of workers affected. If you're trying to gauge your own plant's prospects, a regional plan shows where Adient was spending to cut, and the notice to your state is what puts a date and a headcount on your site.
What the Tillsonburg workers won rested on one clause. Unifor tied the arbitrator's award to a specific promise in the plant's collective agreement, six months' notice of a plant closure, which the union said the sudden shutdown broke. If your plant works under a union contract, its notice and closure provisions are worth reading word for word, since a promise spelled out that plainly is what Tillsonburg's workers were able to enforce after the plant had already shut.
For the Athens closing, Tennessee's Athens memo says the Southeast rapid response team was notified to coordinate services with Adient and the affected employees, and it names the Southeast Local Workforce Development Board as responsible for overseeing that work and following up. At the Maury County plant, where UAW Local 1853 represented the workers, the same WSMV report said the union was working to get its members hired at another Spring Hill factory that was now making seats for GM. Where your plant's work is moving to another factory and a union represents you, your local may know whether that factory is taking people on. If you worked at one of Adient's Tennessee or Missouri plants, Tennessee unemployment benefits and Missouri unemployment benefits lay out how a claim works in those two states. If you're offered severance, the questions in negotiating a severance agreement apply to an individual agreement like the ones Adient's filings describe, and retraining after a layoff covers retraining options more broadly.
A sourced history of Adient layoffs
April 2026, Athens, Tennessee plant closing notice
Tennessee's Athens memo records Adient's notice to close the plant for good on June 30, affecting 210 workers who had no union contract or bumping rights; a regional rapid response team was assigned to coordinate services.
Fiscal 2026, restructuring plan centered on EMEA job cuts
Adient's June 2026 quarterly report puts 2026 Plan charges at $33 million through nine months, for restructuring made up primarily of workforce reductions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
April 2025, Lexington and Columbia, Tennessee plant closings
Adient gave Tennessee notice that two plants would close for good on June 27, Lexington with 320 workers and no union contract, per the state's Lexington memo, and Columbia with 95 workers under a union contract, per its Columbia memo.
2024, Riverside, Missouri layoffs in two waves
Adient set 172 layoffs at Riverside in waves on November 11 and January 6, in the unit serving a customer whose production needs had ended, KSHB reported. Members of UAW Local 710 would have bumping rights under their previous union agreement.
April 2024, European restructuring plans
Adient announced European cuts through workforce reductions and moving work to countries with lower labor costs, telling affected employees that day, its Form 8-K says, and expected a charge of about $125 million, almost all European termination benefits.
November 2022, Tillsonburg, Ontario foam plant closing
Adient shut its Tillsonburg foam plant suddenly, telling 192 workers their last shift had already passed, Global News reported. An arbitrator later awarded about 190 of them 14 weeks of extra pay for a missed six-month closing notice in their contract, Unifor said.
What to do if you're laid off from Adient
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Adient's biggest hubs: Tennessee, Missouri. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Adient's hub states run: Tennessee, Missouri, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Adient layoff and severance questions
What severance has Adient given laid-off employees?
Tennessee's Athens memo and the WSMV and KSHB reports on the Tennessee and Missouri cuts give no severance amount for those workers. Adient's December 2023 quarterly report said its restructuring severance was paid over each employee's severance period or in a lump sum under individual severance agreements. In Canada, an arbitrator added 14 weeks of pay for Tillsonburg workers on top of the severance they'd already received, Unifor said.
How many WARN notices has Adient filed?
Twelve filings in our WARN tracker match Adient, 10 under its own names and 2 from TechnoTrim, a unit it now owns outright, which filed in Kentucky in 1999 and 2001. The three dated since January 2025 are all in Tennessee and cover 625 jobs, and filings under Johnson Controls' name aren't counted.
Do union workers at Adient have bumping rights in a layoff?
The two plants on record differ. At Riverside, Adient said the laid-off UAW Local 710 members were to keep bumping rights set out in their prior contract, KSHB reported, while Tennessee's Athens memo says the Athens employees had neither a union contract nor bumping rights. If a union contract covers your plant, it's worth asking the local which provision of that agreement applies to a layoff.
