Laid off from Amentum.
Where an Amentum layoff has a cause on record, it traces to a customer moving a contract or a program reaching its end, and two recent ones came from commercial clients. Altria handed its Richmond maintenance work to JLL in 2025, Intel moved facilities work away from Hillsboro, and more than 380 Maryland jobs went with an intelligence transition in August 2026.

Amentum layoff history
When an Amentum notice goes out, the useful first question is which customer moved the contract and who holds it now. Amentum runs engineering, facilities and intelligence programs mostly for federal agencies, and the U.S. federal government made up 81% of its revenue in fiscal 2025. Each reduction with a cause on record started the same way. Somebody decided, the contract ended on a date, and the notice followed the date. Our tracker holds 64 all-time filings under the Amentum and PAE Shared Services names, with 16 filings covering 1,170 jobs since the start of 2025.
Two of the clearest examples aren't federal at all. In Richmond, Amentum Operation and Maintenance Services told Virginia on July 2, 2025 that 56 jobs would end by August 31 after Altria awarded its maintenance contract to a competing contractor. Amentum had held that work since 2007, covering mechanical work, HVAC, plumbing, elevator work, landscaping and snow removal at Altria's headquarters and other Richmond-area locations. None of the 56 were represented by a union. Area Operations Manager Daniel Feldman said the winner was Jones Lang Lasalle, and that JLL was likely to hire a majority of the employees being laid off, though neither Altria nor JLL commented.
The same shape repeated in 2026 with a different client. Amentum wrote to Hillsboro Mayor Beach Pace that 74 Oregon jobs would end as an Intel contract expires October 19, awarded to another competitor contractor the company didn't name. Forty-five of those 74 are maintenance technicians, 14 are managers and supervisors and 12 are warehouse workers, doing the operations, maintenance and engineering work behind Intel's HVAC, electrician and boiler services. An Arizona filing dated August 21, 2026 lists 75 jobs at Chandler, and nothing in the reporting we track explains that one.
On the federal side the documented rounds split between a program that ended and contracts that moved. Amentum's letter to Colorado WARN said the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant project "has completed its operations mission and will commence with closure activities", and 135 people finished on September 30, 2025, the largest groups being OPS Support Tender Crew and Plant Operator. Westword counted seven Colorado rounds and 485 people that year. Maryland is the newer story. Two notices dated August 18, 2026 cover 317 facilities support services workers and 65 in engineering services at a single Hanover address, effective October 31 and November 13, and the state typed both Mass Layoff - No Recall. Spokesperson Chanel Mann said the transition of certain intelligence contracts triggered them.
Losing work because somebody else won a bid is a bleak way for a job to end. What it gives you is something specific to chase, and that's the award rather than the notice. Ask your program manager or the customer's contracting officer who won the work and when the transition starts, then approach that company yourself, because the one time an Amentum manager addressed it on the record he expected the successor to take most of the staff. Ask whether your clearance sponsorship moves with the job, and get your separation date in writing, since Amentum's own annual report says agencies may modify, curtail or terminate its contracts with little or no notice. No terms on record for a single one of these filings. If you're offered an agreement, the payment terms, the release language and the signing deadline are the parts to read closely. Our WARN tracker holds all 64 Amentum filings, and the Colorado, Maryland and Virginia pages carry each state's benefit figures and filing steps.

Forty-five of the 74 are maintenance technicians. An Arizona filing dated August 21, 2026 lists 75 jobs at Chandler, and nothing in the reporting we track gives a cause for it.
July 2025, Richmond, Virginia · Amentum Operation and Maintenance Services told Virginia on July 2, 2025 that 56 jobs would end by August 31, after Altria awarded a maintenance contract Amentum had held since 2007 to a competing contractor. None of the 56 were union represented.
No terms on record. Amentum's area operations manager said the winner, Jones Lang Lasalle, was likely to hire a majority of those laid off.
2025, Pueblo, Colorado · Seven rounds between January and October 2025 as the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant wound down, the largest at 135, 93 and 92 jobs. Amentum's letter to Colorado WARN said the project "has completed its operations mission and will commence with closure activities." Westword counted 485 people across the seven filings.
September 2024, the Jacobs combination · Amentum closed its merger with Jacobs' Critical Mission Solutions and Cyber and Intelligence businesses on September 27, 2024, starting with more than 53,000 people. The Anne Arundel intelligence work arrived through that deal, which had absorbed KEYW in 2019.
How Amentum's layoffs compare to other companies
Every Amentum reduction with a cause on record traces to a customer decision or a finished mission. Altria and Intel each moved work to another contractor, Pueblo closed out a project the company said had completed its operations mission, and the Hanover notices followed what Amentum called a transition of intelligence contracts. Where a filing has no cause on record, our tracker carries the row and nothing more.
What to do after being laid off from Amentum
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Amentum's biggest hubs: Colorado, Maryland, Virginia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Amentum's hub states run: Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Amentum layoff and severance questions
What severance does Amentum pay in layoffs?
No terms on record anywhere in our tracker. Nothing in the filings, the state logs or the reporting we track puts a number on an Amentum package. The closest thing to a commitment in our sources is the Richmond round, where an Amentum manager said the successor was likely to hire most of the affected staff, and that's work rather than severance. If you're offered a separation agreement or plan materials, read the payment terms, the release language and any deadline before you sign.
Why do so many Amentum layoffs happen in Colorado?
Because one Pueblo program was finishing. Amentum's letter to Colorado WARN said the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant project had completed its operations mission and would commence with closure activities, and 135 people finished there on September 30, 2025. Westword counted seven rounds and 485 people between January and October 2025, second among Colorado companies that year. That cluster tracks one site winding down, and in 2026 the filings moved to Maryland, Oregon and Arizona.
Does the Jacobs merger mean more Amentum layoffs?
The record doesn't connect them that way. The combination closed September 27, 2024 and carried the Anne Arundel intelligence work with it, since the Jacobs business had absorbed KEYW in 2019. What the August 2026 notices name as their cause is the transition of certain intelligence contracts. Amentum's reported workforce did fall from more than 53,000 people to about 50,000 across its last two annual reports, but neither report attributes that to the merger or to layoffs.
My Amentum WARN notice says PAE. Is that the same company?
For our count, yes. The tracker matches filings under the Amentum name and under PAE Shared Services, the legacy entity that signs some of the older notices. States record whichever legal entity files, so the employer on your paperwork may not be the name you worked under. When you look yourself up in a state WARN log or file for benefits, try the entity printed on the notice as well as Amentum.
Who do I contact when Amentum loses the contract I worked on?
Whoever won it, and our sources document that once. When Altria moved its Richmond maintenance contract in 2025, Amentum Area Operations Manager Daniel Feldman said the winner was Jones Lang Lasalle and that JLL was likely to hire a majority of those being laid off. That was Amentum's expectation rather than a hiring commitment from JLL, and neither company commented, so treat it as a reason to approach the winner yourself early. In Hillsboro, Amentum told the mayor only that the Intel work went to another competitor contractor, without naming it.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Amentum?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Amentum's biggest U.S. hubs are Colorado, Maryland, Virginia. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Amentum?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Amentum?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Amentum?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
