Laid off from Comcast.
Comcast retired its three-division structure, ending the Central division run out of Atlanta and closing the West division's building in Centennial, and spun its cable networks into Versant on January 2, 2026. In June 2026 it announced a second split, sending NBCUniversal and Sky into their own company, so the reorganizing has kept going rather than settled.

A second separation announced in June 2026, NBCUniversal and Sky
On June 29, 2026 Comcast said it intended to separate into two independent publicly traded companies through a tax-free spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky, keeping broadband, wireless and business services on the Comcast side, and said it expected to complete the spin-off in about a year. Three weeks later Brian Roberts told analysts the split would give two exceptional companies the focus and agility to win in markets that are changing fast. The release names no job effect, and our tracker holds no Comcast filing in 2026.

Comcast layoff history
If your role went in one of Comcast's 2025 division cuts, what ended was the division rather than a headcount target. Comcast retired the three-division structure that ran its connectivity and platforms unit, and two of those divisions went with it. The Central division was run out of Atlanta, covered eleven states, and went with 240 layoffs, the West division was run out of Centennial, Colorado, covered eleven more, and went with 302, and the two notices come to 542 roles between them. Only one building closed with them. Comcast's vice president of state government affairs told Colorado regulators the West division would cease to exist beginning in 2026, after which the Centennial facility would be closed. The same year the company reported a loss of 226,000 domestic broadband customers in the second quarter of 2025.
What the notices said about pay was thin, and identical in both states. Laid-off employees would be considered for other positions at the company, with severance benefits for anyone who doesn't find another role, and in Georgia Comcast said it again, that many affected employees would be considered for other positions while anyone who doesn't transition receives a severance package. No terms on record in either state. The sequence is the part worth pinning down, because internal consideration comes first and severance only reaches the people it fails. Being told the work was fine and the box it sat in is gone is a rotten thing to absorb.
The one time Comcast published package terms, the record goes back to 2012, when it closed the Morgan Hill call center and moved about 1,000 Northern California jobs into centers in Oregon, Washington and Colorado, shutting Sacramento and Livermore in the same consolidation. Employees got three choices, transfer with $3,000 of relocation assistance, another position at Comcast California, or a minimum four-week severance package based on seniority and other criteria, each carrying a $1,000 performance bonus for hitting goals through the closing date. A Comcast regional vice president said at the time that the high cost of doing business in California made it difficult to run cost-effective call centers there. Those are 2012 terms from one state, and nothing on record carries them forward to a later round.
The media side moved on its own clock. The NBC News round came as that unit trimmed costs ahead of the split of most of Comcast's cable networks into Versant, and that separation completed effective 11:59 p.m. Eastern on January 2, 2026. Six months after that, Comcast announced a second one, a tax-free spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky into their own public company. Brian Roberts told analysts three weeks after the announcement that it would give two exceptional companies the focus and agility to win in markets that are changing fast. Neither release names a job effect.
Comcast ended 2025 with about 179,000 employees, down 3,000 from 182,000 a year earlier and down from about 186,000 at the end of 2023, and its Atlanta tower at The Battery held 884 workers when the 240-job filing landed, so the site stayed open while the division inside it closed. Our tracker holds 35 all-time Comcast filings, 3 filings covering 584 jobs since the start of 2025 across Colorado, Georgia and Maryland, and none at all in 2026. Those totals reflect the state archives this site collects, so a notice covering your own site can exist without turning up in them. The WARN filings tracker is where to look up what Comcast reported for a given address and date. Before you sign anything, get the internal-consideration window and the severance start date in writing, then check both against the dates printed on your notice.

How Comcast's layoffs compare to other companies
The two largest reported rounds of 2025 worked differently. Closing the West division emptied a particular building in Centennial. In Atlanta the Central division ended inside a tower that stayed open, where Comcast said its Big South operations would continue, and the NBC News round cut about 150 roles from a unit that also stayed. Which of those you were in changes what an internal move can look like.
What to do after being laid off from Comcast
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Comcast's biggest hubs: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Colorado, Maryland. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Comcast's hub states run: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Colorado, Maryland, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Comcast layoff and severance questions
What severance does Comcast pay?
No terms on record for the 2025 division closures or anything since. In those notices Comcast said affected employees would be considered for other positions first, and that severance followed only for the people that search left without a job. No weeks and no formula were attached to either half. The only round in the reporting we track with published terms is the 2012 California call center consolidation, where a Comcast regional vice president described a minimum four-week severance package based on seniority and other criteria. Those are 2012 terms from one state and they establish nothing about a later round, so the agreement you're offered settles yours.
Why is Comcast restructuring?
Comcast retired the three-division model that ran its connectivity and platforms unit and moved those responsibilities to headquarters teams. A memo sent to employees in September 2025 put it as headquarters teams designing strategy while field teams execute, a model the company said would enable faster decision-making and stronger execution. The same stretch brought a loss of 226,000 domestic broadband customers in the second quarter of 2025, the completed Versant separation in January 2026, and a second separation announced in June 2026. The WARN notices themselves attribute the layoffs to the division closures.
Is Comcast splitting up again?
Yes. On June 29, 2026 Comcast announced it intended to separate into two independent publicly traded companies through a tax-free spin-off of NBCUniversal and Sky. The media company would hold Universal theme parks, the film and television studios, NBC and Telemundo, Peacock, Bravo and Sky, while Comcast kept broadband, wireless and business services. The company said it expected to complete the spin-off in about a year. No job effect is stated in the release.
What happened to Comcast's West and Central divisions?
Both closed. The West division ran eleven states from California to Montana out of Centennial, Colorado, and Comcast's vice president of state government affairs told Colorado regulators it would cease to exist beginning in 2026, with the facility closing after that and approximately 302 employees permanently laid off. The Central division ran eleven states from Alabama to Wisconsin out of Atlanta and closed with 240 layoffs. Comcast said its Big South region operations in metro Atlanta would continue.
Does Comcast move people to another job instead of laying them off?
That was the stated sequence in both 2025 notices. Comcast said affected employees would be considered for other positions within the company, and that anyone who didn't transition would receive severance. Two things follow from that. Being considered isn't the same as being offered, and the window runs on the company's calendar rather than yours. Ask in writing which roles you're being considered for, which manager makes that call, and what date the severance calculation starts from.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Comcast?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Comcast's biggest U.S. hubs are Pennsylvania, Georgia, Colorado, Maryland. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Comcast?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Comcast?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Comcast?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
