What eBay layoffs have meant for employees

eBay's companywide cuts in 2023, 2024 and 2026 were each announced in January or February, and each came with the company's account of why. In his February 2023 message, Jamie Iannone wrote that the cuts made room to invest in new roles and simplify eBay's structure, and his January 2024 letter said headcount and expenses had outpaced the growth of the business, with teams being consolidated. The 2026 round came the same month eBay reported a 2025 profit of more than $2 billion, as SFGATE noted. When eBay has cut, the news has moved fast. In 2023 Iannone told staff the notifications would go out within 24 hours of his message. In January 2024 the company asked every US employee to work from home on January 24 so the conversations, held over Zoom, could happen in private, and the same letter said contracts with its alternate workforce would be scaled back in the months that followed. The February 2026 California filings listed layoffs taking effect the day they were filed. The most detailed eBay severance terms on record came out of bargaining. TCGplayer's Syracuse workers had the only union at an eBay-owned brand, according to CNY Central, and the union said the severance pay in the closing agreement its members ratified unanimously in 2025 was more than double the first offer. If severance comes with your notice and a release to sign, it's reasonable to ask how the amount was worked out, whether it can move, and whether eBay will cover any of your COBRA premiums, as it did for those union members. Our tracker counts 469 jobs in eBay's 2026 California filings, and 198 of them belong to the San Francisco notice, whose staff eBay said were expected to move to San Jose, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The February notices for 243 San Jose and 28 San Francisco jobs are the layoffs. If you were offered the reassignment to San Jose and it didn't work for you, it's worth asking HR in writing whether turning it down would count as resigning and whether severance would still apply.

If you work for eBay outside the US, the company's own announcements are worth rereading. Its 2023 message said notifications in some locations were proposals subject to consultation required by law, and its January 2024 filing made decisions subject to local consultation requirements in certain countries. If you've received word that your role is being eliminated, or a consultation proposal, it's worth asking whether what you have is a proposal or a final decision. In Israel, the Netanya closing followed smaller rounds there in 2023 and 2024, Globes counted.

Beyond RSUs, eBay's 2025 annual report describes a stock purchase plan that buys shares at 85% of the lower of the price on an offering period's first day or a purchase period's last day, with purchases capped at 10% of eligible pay. • April 2026, San Francisco office closing

  The notice listed 198 workers, and eBay said they were expected to move to its San Jose headquarters as the lease ran out, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. They included engineers, researchers, directors and financial analysts.

• February 2026, eBay cuts about 800 roles

  The cut was about 6% of eBay's workforce. Its California filings listed 243 jobs in San Jose and 28 in San Francisco, managers and more than two dozen directors among them, and a spokesperson told SFGATE that workers would be offered severance pay.

• May 2025, TCGplayer to close its Syracuse operation

  The closing was set to move TCGplayer's work to an eBay-run center in Kentucky and lay off 220 people. The workers' union ratified a closing agreement in June and filed a labor board complaint over the layoffs, CNY Central reported.

• May 2025, eBay's Israel R&D center set to close

  eBay told staff in Netanya it would close its R&D center there in the first quarter of 2026, ending nearly 200 jobs, and said it would support employees through the transition, Globes reported.

• January 2024, about 1,000 roles, or 9%

  eBay's January 23 filing put the expected charges at $90 million to $110 million, substantially all severance and post-employment benefits, and its 2024 annual report recorded a $99 million charge for the plan.

• February 2023, about 500 roles, or 4%

  Jamie Iannone told employees about 500 jobs worldwide would go and promised transition packages with severance and incentive payments, per eBay's February 7 filing. Its 2024 annual report put the charge at $42 million.

What to do if you're laid off from eBay
