Laid off from GameStop.

Several GameStop rounds became public through the people in them, in reported memos, LinkedIn posts and staff accounts on Reddit. The company's filings count closed stores rather than jobs, and those closings far outnumber the notices in our tracker.

What we know about GameStop severance and layoffs

  • 1,317 U.S. stores closed across fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2025, by GameStop's own counts
  • 31% of U.S. stores closed in fiscal 2025, taking 2,325 down to 1,598
  • About 10,000 fewer full-time staff worldwide from 2020 to 2026, sold units included
  • 236 workers on the WARN letter for the Shepherdsville, Kentucky hub in 2023
  • 3 tracker notices, 214 jobs in all, the newest York's 2024 closing

The most recent GameStop layoff we've found

GameStop's September 2026 quarterly report says that at this time it doesn't anticipate closing a significant number of stores in fiscal 2026. It also divested France, its remaining operating entity in Europe, in the quarter ended August 1.

What GameStop layoffs have meant for employees

GameStop's own word for its shrinking store fleet is optimization. Its September 2026 quarterly report calls the process a store portfolio optimization review and files its exits from eight countries under International Streamlining. Those exits ran both ways, with German stores closed and the Italian subsidiary sold in the same quarter, as its fiscal 2024 annual report records. If you're trying to size what happened at your store or in your district, the store counts won't do it. A closed store and a lost job are different measures, since the employee accounts PlayStation LifeStyle carried in January 2025 describe transfer offers at closing stores.

The nearest thing to a people count is the workforce line in each annual report. Full-time staff stood at about 14,000 worldwide in the 10-K filed in March 2020 and about 4,000 in the 10-K filed in March 2026, while the top of the part-time range shrank from 42,000 to 16,000. That drop runs wider than layoffs. The earlier count includes staff of businesses GameStop has since left or sold, and CEO Matt Furlong told investors in December 2022 that a big part of its cost cutting came from lower corporate headcount, with departing employees not replaced, as CoStar News reported it. So the gap of about 10,000 tells you how much smaller the company got, and it can't tell you how many people were laid off.

The corporate side moved quickly in both directions. Furlong's July 2022 memo, per International Business Times, put corporate hiring at more than 600 people since 2021 and the first half of 2022, in the same message that announced layoffs meant to help the company 'operate nimbly'. By December, work on GameStop's blockchain wallet hadn't kept that team out of the cuts, as Fortune covered. In that round, a product still being built wasn't a shelter.

The York warehouse was young when its closing letter went in. GameStop had announced the lease only about 2 1/2 years earlier, to expand its North American fulfillment network, according to the Central Penn Business Journal. Both warehouse letters covered every employee on site, so nobody there was spared by shift or department. If you worked in either building and still have your separation paperwork, it's a better record of your last day than a letter's dates, which were the company's plan across a span of months.

What's public about store-level terms came from store staff. The unverified January 2025 accounts drew a line between full-time and part-time workers, and GameStop's fiscal 2025 report counts far more part-time associates worldwide than full-time ones. Some of those accounts narrowed it further to Store Leads and Assistant Store Leads, so your title may have mattered as much as your hours. If you're offered a transfer, you can compare the location, schedule, title and pay against any severance terms you have in writing, and a saved copy of your current schedule and last pay stub gives that comparison a starting point.

With 3 notices in our WARN tracker against all those closed stores, an empty search says little about your own closing. If your job was at the corporate offices in Grapevine or at York, Shepherdsville or Pembroke Pines, Texas unemployment, Pennsylvania unemployment, Kentucky unemployment and Florida unemployment lay out how a claim starts. With retail operations in 50 states, a store worker elsewhere has another state's rules.

What to do if you're laid off from GameStop

GameStop layoff and severance questions

Is GameStop laying off employees in 2026?

GameStop's New Zealand operations closed in the quarter ended January 31, 2026, and the reporting we track shows no new U.S. layoff round announced since then. At this time, the company doesn't anticipate closing a significant number of stores in fiscal 2026, according to its 10-Q filed in September 2026, which calls the U.S. footprint a core component of its logistics infrastructure strategy.

What severance has GameStop given laid-off employees?

The word severance doesn't appear in GameStop's fiscal 2025 annual report or September 2026 quarterly report, and no staff formula or amount is on record from the company. In January 2025, PlayStation LifeStyle reported that only full-time staff could get it, and one anonymous Reddit post described a week of pay for each year with the company, up to eight weeks, in unverified accounts that disagree on who qualified. Game Informer's staff learned in August 2024 that severance would start, TheWrap wrote, citing Kotaku.

How many stores has GameStop closed?

GameStop's filings count 590 U.S. closings in its fiscal 2024 annual report and 727 in its fiscal 2025 annual report. That's 1,317 together, and the U.S. fleet stood at 1,598 stores on January 31, 2026.

How many GameStop WARN notices are in the tracker?

Three appear in our WARN tracker, covering 214 jobs, a Maine notice for 5 jobs in January 2020, the Pembroke Pines notice for 54 in January 2023 and York's closing for 155, with a March 2024 layoff date. CoStar News reported a separate 2023 WARN letter to Kentucky covering 236 workers at Shepherdsville, which isn't in that count, and neither figure is GameStop's complete filing history.
