Laid off from Genentech.
Genentech has cut jobs in separate rounds since 2024, and a spokesperson said in 2026 that every layoff is tied to its South San Francisco headquarters, whatever state the worker lives in. More than once, spokespeople have called the cuts periodic adjustments, and in 2026 they said hiring continued.

The most recent Genentech layoff we've found
The newest Genentech notice in our WARN tracker, dated June 26, 2026, covers 103 jobs. In July a spokesperson told BioSpace that most of the cuts were focused adjustments affecting a small proportion of the organization and that Genentech kept hiring, gRED included.
What Genentech layoffs have meant for employees
Genentech's job cuts since 2024 have come as a run of separate notices, and the explanations its spokespeople have given have stayed close to one another. The company regularly evaluates its needs and periodically adjusts the make-up of its workforce, a spokesperson told SFGATE in August 2024, and it had found certain positions across Genentech no longer needed for its future work. Another described the spring 2025 cut as a strategic workforce planning exercise rather than a cost cut, according to a June 2025 SFGATE report, and in June 2026 a spokesperson told Fierce Pharma that targeted adjustments would keep its capabilities and investments aligned with its core therapeutic areas. For your own role, the useful questions are what work the position covered and where that work went, which is a fair thing to put to your manager.
The hiring didn't stop alongside the cuts. Roche had about 2,000 open positions across the company when the spring 2025 notice went out, a spokesperson noted in that June 2025 report, and in February 2026 another told Fierce Biotech that the layoffs affect some teams but also create new opportunities, with Genentech actively hiring for roles that bring digital, automation and AI capabilities into the organization. In May 2025 Genentech also pledged $700 million for a North Carolina plant that, as BioSpace reported, it said will add 400 manufacturing jobs once running. If Genentech has told you your role is ending and you'd rather stay inside the company or move over to Roche, you can ask whether any internal or Roche roles are open now and whether you're eligible for them.
In two parts of Genentech, whole operations have closed. In research, the cancer immunology unit shut in August 2024, which a spokesperson put down to shifts in the science of immuno-oncology, BioSpace reported, and the gRED reorganization of June 2026 set out to close two more units, by Fierce Pharma's account. In manufacturing, the 2023 plant closing came with commercial supply shifting to other sites in Genentech's global network, a spokesperson told BioProcess Insider. If your unit or line was one that closed, it's fair to ask how your skills map onto the areas the company said in June 2026 it was hiring for, the capabilities and science it called most critical to its portfolio.
The address on a Genentech notice may not be where you worked. A spokesperson told Fierce Biotech in February 2026 that all of the company's layoffs are associated with its South San Francisco headquarters, regardless of the state an employee lives in, and that cuts on a notice listing 1 DNA Way had in fact fallen across departments and sites, as the year's other rounds had. So if you were laid off while working remotely or at another site, your job may still have been counted on a California notice, and one 2025 notice took until the following February to appear on the state's public list. If you were laid off and can't find your job on a notice there, it's reasonable to ask Genentech whether your job was covered by one and, if so, which. You can look up Genentech's California notices in our WARN tracker.
The packages Genentech has described have come in general terms, so the details are worth gathering. Where severance is part of the offer, the questions that matter are what it adds up to, how Genentech arrived at it, how long benefits continue after the final day and what the outplacement help consists of, and it's sensible to have the answers on paper. There's more on what's worth raising with an employer in negotiating severance, and for health coverage once the job ends, there's how COBRA works. For an unemployment claim, there's California unemployment benefits and, for other states, unemployment benefits by state.
A sourced history of Genentech layoffs
June 2026, gRED research group restructuring
Three vice presidents were among those let go in what a spokesperson told Fierce Pharma was a restructuring of the gRED research group, which Endpoints News reported would close the physiological chemistry and infectious disease teams. A California notice put the cuts at 103 jobs, and a spokesperson told BioSpace they reached several areas.
October 2025, 118 jobs in a California notice
A WARN notice, BioSpace reported, set Nov. 28 as the end date for 118 Genentech staffers.
August 2025, 141 jobs disclosed in February 2026
Layoffs of 141 staffers took effect Aug. 18 under a notice filed June 26 that reached the state's public listing only on Feb. 4, 2026, which a spokesperson told Fierce Biotech was potentially due to a system glitch.
July 2025, 87 jobs
A notice the state processed in mid-July covered 87 Genentech employees, BioSpace reported, with their layoffs effective Sept. 15.
May 2025, 143 jobs across a slew of teams
A May 29 filing listed 143 jobs, from engineers and analysts to senior directors, in teams including AI and machine learning, social media, facilities and clinical supplies, SFGATE reported, and a spokesperson wrote that those cut would receive severance pay, continuation of benefits and career outplacement help.
August 2024, 93 jobs, scientists hit hardest
A notice for 93 more workers hit scientist roles hardest, according to SFGATE, and also covered engineers, managers, analysts and one vice president, with jobs ending in October, November or December; a spokesperson said severance packages would include benefits, pay and outplacement services.
April 2024, 436 jobs, about 3% of staff
An April 3 notice listed 436 employees, SFGATE reported, among them dozens of director-level workers plus scientists, administrative aides and engineers, with cuts set from June 5 to Aug. 7.
March 2023, South San Francisco production plant closing

What to do if you're laid off from Genentech
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Genentech's biggest hubs: California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Genentech's hub states run: California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Genentech layoff and severance questions
What severance has Genentech given laid-off employees?
For the 2023 plant closing, BioProcess Insider was told the 265 people affected would get full severance pay and financial benefits. A spokesperson quoted in an August 2024 SFGATE report said packages would include pay, benefits and career outplacement services, and one quoted in a June 2025 SFGATE report said laid-off workers would receive severance pay, continued benefits and outplacement assistance. No amount, number of weeks or formula appears in any of them.
How many WARN notices has Genentech filed?
Our WARN tracker counts 16 Genentech filings, every one a California notice, running from a 2017 notice for Vacaville to one dated June 26, 2026; the largest, in July 2020, listed 474 jobs. Five of them, covering 592 jobs, date from 2025 or later.
Is Roche behind Genentech's layoffs?
Some of them, by Genentech's account. Its spokesperson told Fierce Biotech the changes behind the 2025 cuts included global manufacturing changes at Roche and the move of Genentech's inclusion and belonging team into a broader Roche unit, along with cuts across IT, research and about a dozen other teams. Fierce Pharma later called the April 2024 cut a 3% reduction by Roche; at the time, a Genentech spokesperson told SFGATE it would let the company focus on its most promising molecules.
