Laid off from Moderna.
If you joined Moderna during the boom, the whiplash has been rough. The company went from hiring at a pandemic pace to cutting jobs, including at its Massachusetts sites, as demand for its shots fell, and by 2025 the state's biotech sector was reported battered by a downturn.

The most recent Moderna layoff we've found

What Moderna layoffs have meant for employees
Moderna staffed up fast during the pandemic. A former executive director told the Boston Globe he was one of about 600 people it hired over two weeks in June 2023, and by the end of 2024 its workforce was roughly seven times its pre-pandemic size, the paper reported, and by then Moderna was the second-biggest biopharma employer in Massachusetts after Takeda. Its fortunes have since reversed with falling demand for COVID-19 shots and slow uptake of its RSV vaccine, as BioPharma Dive put it. If you were hired in that rush and let go as the company cut back, that's a hard turn to take.
Former employees have described smaller cuts in the months before the company-wide one. The former executive director told the Globe he went in a third round of layoffs in 2024 and estimated that at least 100 Moderna employees in Massachusetts lost jobs that year, and another former employee said about 80 people were let go with him from technical development at the Norwood site in late February 2025. A third, cut in December 2024, put the Massachusetts losses since the third quarter of 2023 at "multiple hundreds of workers." Those are their accounts, and the paper reported that Moderna had acknowledged only its February digital layoffs. If you were cut in one of those rounds and an interviewer asks what happened, it's fair to call it a layoff, and explaining a layoff has words for that conversation.
The first version of the cost plan came with word that it wouldn't cost jobs. When Moderna first laid out its cost cuts, a spokesperson called the plan, in BioPharma Dive's account, a financial change that wouldn't involve layoffs. Bancel's July 2025 note to staff then said reshaping the company to fit the realities of its business made job cuts necessary after all. That's less than a year from a plan described as sparing jobs to a company-wide cut. If you're still at Moderna and weighing your options, its fourth-quarter results said it plans further operating expense reductions in 2026, and how the last plan's word on jobs played out is worth factoring in.
Stock was a bigger share of pay the more senior you were at Moderna, its 2025 annual report says, and the employee RSU award agreement forfeits units that haven't vested when a job ends in a layoff, so a cut there could cost stock as well as salary, more of it the higher you sat. If you held equity, it's worth matching each grant's vesting dates against your last day before tallying what you kept.
Finding the next job hasn't been quick for two of the people the Globe spoke with. The former executive director, 64, had applied for about 40 biopharma jobs in Massachusetts for half a dozen interviews and no offers, and said he thought it entirely possible he might not land another job, while another former employee had applied to about 25 jobs without landing an interview. A recruiter counted at least 60 drug companies in the state that made layoffs or closed in a year and estimated at least 1,000 people lost jobs, and by a trade foundation's count the paper cited, the state's life sciences employment stayed flat in 2024 for the first time in more than a decade. If you're looking in that market, it can help to budget for a long search, and the layoff budget calculator shows how far savings stretch. If you're searching late in a career, as he was, age and the job search takes on that part of it.
Your stock and equity
All Moderna employees received equity awards, choosing their own split between stock options and restricted stock units, with the awards generally vesting over four years, according to its 2025 annual report. If you hold unvested restricted stock units and you're offered separation terms, they're worth raising, since Moderna's employee RSU award agreement lets the plan's administrator speed up vesting at any time.
A sourced history of Moderna layoffs
July 2025, global cut of about 10%
Moderna told all employees it was cutting its global workforce and expected to end the year with fewer than 5,000 people, saying in Stéphane Bancel's note to staff that every effort had been made to avoid affecting jobs.
February 2025, about 50 digital jobs
Moderna acknowledged laying off about 50 digital employees, the Boston Globe reported, and BioSpace, relaying Fierce Biotech, said the cuts spanned its two digital departments.
March 2024, manufacturing cuts confirmed in Burlington, Norwood
Moderna had cut manufacturing jobs at its Burlington and Norwood sites in Massachusetts, some of them in quality assurance, as it resized its COVID-19 footprint, a spokesperson confirmed to Endpoints News.
What to do if you're laid off from Moderna
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Moderna's biggest hubs: Massachusetts. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Moderna's hub states run: Massachusetts, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Moderna layoff and severance questions
What severance has Moderna given laid-off employees?
None of the filings or reporting we track puts a figure or a formula on Moderna's severance, though a scientist cut in December 2024 told the Boston Globe he stayed anonymous to protect his package. Those leaving in July 2025 were told the company would support them through the transition, in Bancel's note to employees. If severance comes with your letter, it's worth asking how the amount was figured and how long you have to decide.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Moderna?
If your awards used the employee forms Moderna filed with the SEC, unvested restricted stock units are forfeited under the RSU award agreement when your job ends for any reason but death or permanent disability. The stock option agreement allows three months after a termination for reasons other than death, disability or cause, or less if the option expires sooner, to exercise options already exercisable, unless the plan's administrator decides otherwise, and the rest end immediately.
How many people did Moderna lay off in 2025?
Moderna described its July 2025 cut as about 10% of the global workforce in Bancel's memo to staff, and the Boston Globe reported that in February it had acknowledged about 50 digital layoffs. Its 2025 annual report put the year-end count near 4,700 full-time staff, against more than 5,800 people a year earlier by BioPharma Dive's count, a gap that also reflects hires and voluntary turnover of about 11%.
Did Moderna file WARN notices for its layoffs?
Our WARN tracker holds no filing under Moderna's name. Moderna's headquarters is in Cambridge, and in 2025 the Boston Globe ranked the company second only to Takeda among Massachusetts biopharma employers. If you worked in Massachusetts, Massachusetts unemployment benefits lays out what the state pays and how to file.
Is Moderna laying off employees in 2026?
Moderna hasn't announced a layoff in 2026, in its filings or in the reporting we track. Lower research personnel costs mainly reflected "portfolio reprioritization and associated resource realignment," Moderna said in its June 2026 quarterly report, which separately tied lower clinical trial spending to the wind-down of late-stage programs, among them a flu and COVID combination vaccine and its congenital CMV and norovirus programs.
