Laid off from Novo Nordisk.
Working at Novo Nordisk through its 2025 overhaul meant hearing about cuts department by department, on a schedule that ran through US teams over two weeks, while North Carolina plant workers announced their own layoffs on LinkedIn. Cuts kept coming in 2026, in Indiana and again in New Jersey.
What we know about Novo Nordisk severance and layoffs
- About 13,000 fewer staff in September 2026 than a year before, Novo's CEO said.
- About 400 Bloomington, Indiana positions slated to end in early May 2026.
- 47 LinkedIn posts from Novo's North Carolina staff reporting a layoff or job search.
- 78,400 positions at Novo Nordisk worldwide when the 2025 cuts were announced.
- 67,000 people in Novo's workforce in September 2026, a spokesperson said.
The most recent Novo Nordisk layoff we've found
In September 2026, Novo Nordisk told New Jersey it planned to cut 108 more jobs at its Plainsboro US headquarters by December 31, NJBIZ reported, a year after its September 2025 notice there. A spokesperson said the company regularly evaluates its organization and is committed to treating everyone with respect.
What Novo Nordisk layoffs have meant for employees
The Novo Nordisk layoffs on record from late 2025 all trace to one restructuring, which the company aimed at every part of itself. Its September 10 announcement said reductions would reach staff areas and headquarters functions, and that affected employees would hear over the following months, once any negotiations local labor rules required were done. Doustdar said then, “It is always difficult to see talented and valued colleagues go.” It's harder from the other side of that sentence. In the US, notices went out within weeks, Reuters reported, and production workers in North Carolina were posting about their own layoffs by early October. If you were notified in that stretch, it's worth keeping the notice and the dates it gave you with the rest of your paperwork.
The reasons Novo gave were about the business. It had staffed up fast as semaglutide moved from diabetes into weight loss, passing 78,000 employees in 2025 by S&P Capital IQ's count, and its announcement said the obesity market had turned more competitive and consumer-driven, growth had slowed, and rapid expansion had added complexity and cost. The plan was to save about 8 billion Danish kroner a year by the end of 2026 and spend it on diabetes and obesity, commercial work and research included. A year on, Doustdar told investors the decisions weren't easy but were necessary, with the money going into R&D and into making the company more competitive, BioSpace reported. If you were let go, the company's own account of its position is worth having in hand when a recruiter asks how you'd explain the layoff.
If you're at Plainsboro, the second notice there describes planned cuts, and the company has since shortened its name to Novo, NJBIZ reported. New Jersey's list still names the filer Novo Nordisk, so searching notices and news under both names is worth the extra minute. If you were let go from Plainsboro, New Jersey's layoff rules and New Jersey unemployment benefits cover the state's side of it.
Production staff reported cuts too. Clayton, Novo's largest US manufacturing site, employed some 2,500 people in 2024 and was in the middle of a $4.1 billion expansion expected to add 1,000 more when workers there began posting that they'd been laid off, Reuters found. Those cuts followed earlier ones on the US obesity education team, and one laid-off worker who posted told Reuters a nondisclosure agreement kept them from speaking to the media. If you're asked to sign confidentiality terms as you leave, it's worth knowing what they'd stop you from saying and to whom, and whether they'd reach a conversation with a lawyer or a state agency.
In Bloomington, Indiana, Novo said it would keep investing in a plant it called critical to its US manufacturing network, and the city said it would work with the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation and other local partners to connect laid-off workers with jobs and support services, The Bloomingtonian reported. If you were cut there, you can ask HR what the support the company announced actually covers and how long it lasts, and the city's partners are worth contacting about openings nearby.
Bloomington and Clayton don't appear in our WARN tracker under Novo's name. If you were laid off at either site, you can start with Indiana unemployment benefits or North Carolina unemployment benefits. Seattle's past cuts sit under Washington's layoff notices, with Washington unemployment benefits alongside.
A sourced history of Novo Nordisk layoffs
September 2026, Plainsboro headquarters notice
Novo Nordisk's second Plainsboro notice in a year, posted in September, covers 108 workers with a December 31, 2026 effective date, New Jersey's 2026 WARN list shows.
May 2026, Bloomington, Indiana plant
Novo Nordisk confirmed about 400 job cuts at the former Catalent plant, set for the beginning of May, leaving about 1,400 people on staff, and said affected workers would be offered severance, outplacement assistance and transition support, The Bloomingtonian reported.
October 2025, US layoffs across departments
US notifications started on a Tuesday and ran into the following week across human resources, clinical development, rare diseases, legal, marketing and sales, finance, public affairs and other teams, Reuters reported from an internal schedule.
October 2025, Clayton, North Carolina plant
Employee posts on LinkedIn showed dozens of layoffs at Novo's largest US manufacturing site, from quality control to production line technicians and an HR assistant, a Reuters review found. Of 73 posts and profiles, 47 said the person was laid off or job hunting.
September 2025, about 9,000 roles to go worldwide
New chief executive Mike Doustdar set out to cut about 9,000 of 78,400 positions, about 5,000 of them in Denmark, in a September 10 announcement. Novo Nordisk notified New Jersey of Plainsboro cuts on September 16, NJBIZ reported.
March 2023, Seattle labs and Indianapolis research site
Novo Nordisk moved its Seattle lab work to other sites and closed its Indianapolis R&D facility as it made greater Boston its main US research hub, cutting about 80 Seattle and 20 Indianapolis positions, its March 2023 release said. Washington's filing in our tracker listed 86 jobs.
November 2014, Seattle inflammation research center
Novo Nordisk closed its Seattle inflammation research center and cut 63 jobs there, and a spokesman told The Seattle Times the workers, out of work by November 3, would get a severance package and other assistance.
What to do if you're laid off from Novo Nordisk
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Novo Nordisk's biggest hubs: New Jersey, Washington. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Novo Nordisk's hub states run: New Jersey, Washington, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Novo Nordisk layoff and severance questions
What severance has Novo Nordisk given laid-off employees?
Novo's statements have named severance but not an amount. In 2014 a spokesman said Seattle researchers losing their jobs would receive a severance package, and in 2026 the company said Bloomington workers would get severance alongside outplacement and transition help. If you're weighing a separation agreement, you can ask HR how the payment was calculated and what the release asks you to give up, both of which matter when negotiating severance.
How many people has Novo Nordisk laid off?
Novo's September 2025 plan called for about 9,000 cuts worldwide. By September 2026 its workforce had shrunk by about 13,000 people, to 67,000, and a spokesperson said about 4,000 of those departures came through attrition, retirements, voluntary exits and jobs left unfilled, which weren't necessarily layoffs.
Did Novo Nordisk file a WARN notice for its New Jersey layoffs?
Yes, for Plainsboro in September 2025 and again in September 2026. The first, effective December 31, 2025, is the one Novo Nordisk filing since 2025 in our tracker, where it shows 811 jobs, as New Jersey's 2025 WARN list does, though NJBIZ reported 263 when it was posted. The second, for 108 jobs effective December 31, 2026, appears on New Jersey's 2026 WARN list.
Can laid-off Novo Nordisk employees apply for other jobs at the company?
Novo offered that in 2023, to the people affected when it closed its Indianapolis R&D site and moved Seattle lab work elsewhere, saying they could pursue open positions at other locations. If you've been given notice, you can ask HR whether you can apply for internal openings before your last day, and if severance is part of your offer, whether taking one would change it.
