Laid off from Takeda.

Takeda's U.S. cuts have included company-wide cost programs and rounds tied to ending a research effort or trimming field staff for a drug nearing patent expiration. Several rounds came with help finding other work inside Takeda, and Takeda has said such moves could lower the final count.

The most recent Takeda layoff we've found

About 4,500 roles across the company were expected to be affected in fiscal 2026, the year ending March 2027, Fierce Pharma reported from Takeda's May 2026 results, which put that year's restructuring costs at about 170 billion yen.

What Takeda layoffs have meant for employees

If your Takeda job is outside Massachusetts, any WARN notice covering it may still have been filed in Massachusetts. Takeda's March 2026 WARN notice assigned every affected employee to 500 Kendall Street in Cambridge, including about 387 roles outside Massachusetts, and attached a list of roles with the sites or remote locations where they work. It also called the decision permanent, said no bumping rights were involved and said no union represented employees at any location. Filings from units Takeda owns can carry other company names. Five California notices went in as Baxalta US and the 2025 Maryland one as BioLife Plasma Services, our WARN tracker shows, so a notice for your site may not say Takeda. Massachusetts's unemployment rules are at Massachusetts unemployment benefits, California's at California unemployment benefits, Illinois's at Illinois unemployment benefits, and every other state's at unemployment benefits by state.

Company-wide programs carry the big numbers. Takeda put its 2024 to 2025 efficiency program at over 4,000 positions affected, Fierce Pharma reported, and the same report tied that push to falling sales of the ADHD drug Vyvanse once generics arrived. The transformation program Takeda's board approved on March 25, 2026, according to its Form 20-F, aims to centralize corporate functions and cut management layers. Narrower rounds have followed a choice about one area of science or one drug, like the 2025 end of cell therapy work and the neuroscience field cuts that Fierce Pharma's March 2026 report tied to Trintellix nearing patent expiration. BioLife's Clarksburg closing, WDTV reported, came after the company weighed what it called the optimization of its network of plasma donation centers, a third kind of decision, about locations.

In May 2023, in a statement the Boston Globe reported, Takeda said there was no plan for a companywide reduction. The next May it rolled out a restructuring drive, and Fierce Pharma's October 2024 report counted three rounds of Massachusetts notices that year. When it ended cell therapy work in October 2025, it told the Boston Globe those layoffs were unrelated to its earlier cuts, MassLive reported, and in March 2026 its board approved a new company-wide program. If you're judging your own team's exposure from how Takeda describes a round, that sequence is worth setting beside the description.

Takeda's March 2026 notice came months before the layoffs it describes, and it promised each affected employee written notice 60 days before a position is eliminated. If your role is on that notice, your own date comes from that written notice, not from the filing, and some role changes were set for as late as 2027. Until a written notice of that kind reaches you, the filing describes the round rather than your own job. The count could move in both directions, too. The notice said its numbers might change as employees took other Takeda jobs, and that Takeda would supplement it if more impacts were identified.

Severance has been a large line in Takeda's accounts. Its annual filing shows 13.7 billion yen of severance in the year to March 2024, 62.6 billion in the year to March 2025, when the efficiency program began, and 35.2 billion the year after, and it projects 170 billion yen of restructuring expense for the year to March 2027, more than its restructuring total in any of those three years. Those are company-wide sums, not a guide to any one person's package, but they show how much more Takeda spent on severance once its enterprise-wide efficiency program was under way.
