Laid off from Viatris.

Viatris has announced two worldwide restructurings, one at its 2020 formation from Mylan and Pfizer's Upjohn business and one in 2026. The first shut the former Mylan plant in Morgantown, where the union bargained its members' severance and the company tied severance offers to staying until the closing date.

What we know about Viatris severance and layoffs

Charges under Viatris's 2026 restructuring reached $77.9 million in the first quarter and, per its second-quarter 10-Q, another $27.3 million in the three months to June 30, 2026, mostly employee-related costs.

What Viatris layoffs have meant for employees

The 2026 plan appears in Viatris's filings as functions and a share of the workforce, from commercial teams and R&D to manufacturing and supply chain, and in its February 2026 8-K Viatris expects most of the program's cash cost to go to severance and employee benefits. The 2020 program's cash costs, about $950 million by the time it was substantially completed in 2023, also went primarily to severance and employee benefits, according to the restructuring note in Viatris's 2025 Form 10-K. Both are company-wide sums, so the better measure of an offer is what Viatris offered people at particular sites. If an offer reaches you, the points in negotiating severance can help you weigh it.

The Morgantown closing put a date at the center of the package. On the December 2020 call, employees learned that layoffs wouldn't come until the closing date and that severance offers would go to those who stayed until July 31, MetroNews reported, while Viatris said its Collins Ferry research lab in Morgantown would stay open. Those offers were to be made on an individual basis. If you've been offered severance and given a last day, and another job comes up before it, the severance and the new start date are worth weighing side by side, since the Morgantown offers depended on staying.

For the roughly 850 union members the Dominion Post counted, the terms came from bargaining after the closing was announced. The plant's 2017 labor contract held no severance pay or benefits for a closing like this one, Viatris told the Dominion Post, and the union called an offer of one week per year of employment, with 26 weeks at most, unacceptable before settling on twice the rate and twice the cap. Under that deal, severance was to be paid on regular paydays rather than as a lump sum. If you're in a bargaining unit at a Viatris site and a closing is announced, the Morgantown record makes the local's bargaining updates worth following closely, since that's where Morgantown's numbers moved.

Union leaders said the deal fell short of what others got. The local's president called it no better than average and nowhere near what corporate employees had received, and members said a newly hired non-union cook had been offered more severance than a union worker with 12 years, by their account. If the union's account is right, terms at the same closing differed by group. If you and your coworkers are weighing packages, comparing them across groups, and not only by years of service, shows whether such a gap exists.

A closing notice can be updated after it goes out. In October 2021 Viatris sent government officials updated San Carlos WARN notices with current anticipated termination dates, it told the Dominion Post, after Mylan had sent the first notices to employees and officials in March 2020. If a closing notice reaches you, it's worth keeping any later version beside the original, since an update is where revised dates would show up.

Every Viatris filing in our WARN tracker went in under a Mylan, Meda or Alaven name, so a search under those names finds what a search for Viatris alone misses. For an unemployment claim, the pages for Georgia, California, New Jersey, Vermont, Illinois and West Virginia, the states where those filings went, set out how to file, and other states are covered too. What to do if you're laid off from Viatris

Viatris layoff and severance questions

What severance has Viatris given laid-off employees?

At the 2021 Morgantown closing, the union's deal set two weeks of regular pay for every year of service, from 12 to 52 weeks, with Viatris paying COBRA premiums for the same stretch, the Dominion Post reported, and Viatris said employees there would get three months to a year of salary and medical benefits by service. San Carlos, California employees were offered severance pay, continued benefits and outplacement counseling, Viatris said in an October 2021 statement to the paper.

Is Viatris laying off workers in 2026?

Viatris has said it expects a global workforce reduction of up to approximately 10% under the restructuring set out in its February 2026 8-K filing, and it expects that restructuring, with its costs and savings, to be completed primarily over three years. Neither that filing nor its second-quarter 10-Q names a site, a country or a headcount for the cuts.

How many WARN notices has Viatris filed?

Eleven filings in our WARN tracker count as Viatris's because companies it owns today, such as Mylan, Meda and Alaven, made them. They run from 2010 through 2021 across six states, and none is from 2025 or 2026. The Morgantown closing alone covered 1,431 employees in the notice the Dominion Post described.

Is Viatris the same company as Mylan?

Mylan became part of Viatris in November 2020, when it combined with Pfizer's Upjohn business; under that deal, described in Viatris's December 2020 8-K/A, Upjohn Inc. became the parent of both and took the name Viatris. In our WARN tracker, several 2021 filings from West Virginia, California and Vermont carry Mylan names.
