General Dynamics layoff history
If General Dynamics let you go, the business unit on your paperwork decides which part of this record is yours. The company describes itself as a Reston, Virginia aerospace and defense company employing more than 120,000 people, and its cuts on record have come one unit at a time. If your badge said GDIT, that business has its own page, and the tracker figures here leave out filings made under GDIT's name.
Gulfstream cut twice in seven months. In October 2019 it eliminated 446 positions, about 3.5 percent of its workforce, across its 11 U.S. sites, mostly business-support and administrative jobs. Its Oct. 15 letter to the Georgia Department of Labor put as many as 362 of those layoffs in Savannah and said it offered separation benefits, and WTOC reported that federal law didn’t count them as mass layoffs and that Gulfstream told the state anyway, as a courtesy. Then on May 1, 2020, Gulfstream reported 699 employees affected at its Savannah facility, in a letter citing COVID-19 and a government-ordered temporary closure of a key manufacturing location, and said affected colleagues may receive severance and benefits extensions depending on individual eligibility criteria.
NASSCO's notices have reached wider than its own forecasts. The San Diego shipbuilder warned as many as 700 of its 3,500 workers in October 2016 that January layoffs could come, saying it was working so that not all of them would be affected. After a July 2018 dry dock accident it notified 1,493 workers while expecting to let closer to 350 go, and the Boilermakers local's president said the lowest evaluations went first. Electric Boat, which had most of its 12,200 employees in the Groton-New London complex, sent its 2013 notices to 55 carpenters and 94 tradespeople, all Metal Trades Council members, and to no salaried staff. The company said its projected workload wasn’t expected to sustain current employment and that the notices were due in part to recent decisions on the USS Miami and USS Springfield, and a Hartford Courant column said seniority rules would put many recent hires out first. At Bath Iron Works, nearly 60 electricians got notice in February 2018 over a shortage of work in their area.
Mission Systems' round on record came in June 2017, when it closed its work at the Land War Net School at Fort Gordon, eliminating 122 jobs, after losing a long-standing Army training contract, with an Employee Transition Program, outplacement assistance and extended health insurance for a period available depending on individual eligibility. Land Systems in London has two salaried rounds on record before 2025. In April 2017 48 salaried staff were laid off and no unionized members were affected, and the company said they left with “fair and appropriate” severance packages plus transition benefits, including help with resumes and finding work. In October 2018 37 salaried employees, most in engineering, followed, at a business that employed roughly 1,850 people. The June 2025 layoffs of about 50 people are the newest General Dynamics cut on record outside GDIT.
The WARN filings tracker counts 66 General Dynamics filings over all the years it holds, leaving out those filed under GDIT's name, and from January 2025 on it shows 0 filings covering 0 jobs. A notice here has often been an opening number. In 2013 Connecticut's Office of Military Affairs director said it’s very common for the first number in a major notice to exceed the layoffs that follow, and NASSCO's 2018 notice named 1,493 people while the company expected about 350 to go. Sitting on a notice that may or may not become a layoff is a rotten place to be, so ask whether you're in the final group, and get the eligibility criteria behind any severance or transition benefit in writing, since Gulfstream in 2020 and Mission Systems in 2017 both tied theirs to individual eligibility. If you're in a union, read your contract's layoff order. A Courant column said seniority rules would set it at Electric Boat in 2013, and at NASSCO the union's president said evaluations did.

What to do after being laid off from General Dynamics
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. General Dynamics's biggest hubs: Georgia, Connecticut, Maine, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what General Dynamics's hub states run: Georgia, Connecticut, Maine, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
General Dynamics layoff and severance questions

How many people did Gulfstream lay off in 2020?
Gulfstream reported 699 employees affected at its Savannah facility in a May 1, 2020 WARN notice to the Georgia Department of Labor, and said it reduced its workforce at multiple locations. Its letter blamed COVID-19.
Does General Dynamics give severance when it lays people off?
Its units have described benefits round by round. Gulfstream said in 2020 that affected colleagues may receive severance and benefits extensions depending on individual eligibility criteria, and Mission Systems tied its 2017 transition program, outplacement assistance and extended health insurance to individual eligibility the same way. Land Systems in London said its 2017 salaried layoffs came with severance packages it called “fair and appropriate”. Ask for the eligibility criteria in writing.
Why did Electric Boat lay off workers in 2013?
Electric Boat said its projected workload wasn’t expected to sustain current employment and that the notices were due in part to recent decisions on the USS Miami and USS Springfield. The Navy had chosen to scrap the Miami after its repair estimate passed $700 million. By September 2, 55 carpenters and 94 tradespeople had 60-day notices, and no salaried employee had been laid off or bought out.
How many NASSCO workers were laid off after the 2018 dry dock accident?
The reporting we track gives no final layoff total. NASSCO notified 1,493 workers after the July accident, and the company said it expected to let closer to 350 of them go. The list included 129 welders, 85 electricians, 84 painters and 82 pipe fitters, and the company said it had arranged programs and resources to assist those affected.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from General Dynamics?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. General Dynamics's biggest U.S. hubs are Georgia, Connecticut, Maine, California. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at General Dynamics?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at General Dynamics?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from General Dynamics?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
