Laid off from General Mills.

In Missouri, General Mills has been moving work from its closing plants to other company sites, with no guaranteed place there for the people who did it. Those plants came with purchases a few years earlier, so a new owner and a shutdown arrived close together.

What General Mills layoffs have meant for employees

If you worked at one of the plants General Mills has shut or set out to shut since 2023, the company hadn't owned it long. The Independence, Iowa, treats plant came with its purchase of Tyson's pet treat business in 2021, according to The Gazette. The St. Charles crust plant arrived with TNT Crust in 2022, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted, and the two Joplin plants came with Whitebridge Pet Brands in December 2024, per the Joplin Globe. For the people inside, that meant a new owner and then, within a few years, a closing date. That's a rough way for a job to end, and it's fair to be angry about it. In Independence the closed plant went to a buyer that planned to reopen it, and the mayor said former workers had been offered jobs there.

In Joplin, General Mills runs other plants in town, and when it set out to close the two Whitebridge plants, officials expected most of those workers to have openings at them, the Globe reported. Joplin workers heard something similar when the Annie's snack plant there closed in 2015. An expected opening still isn't a guaranteed transfer. If you were at one of the Joplin plants and got an offer at another site, it's worth asking whether the pay, the shift and your seniority carry over.

St. Charles went differently. The April notice ran from skilled production operators and freezer operators to team leads and managers, and the May notice said affected employees had no right to transfer or to displace workers at other company facilities, according to 101 The Eagle. A spokeswoman said General Mills was supporting employees interested in exploring opportunities at other locations, the Post-Dispatch reported. Without a right to transfer, a move depended on winning an opening somewhere else. If you're weighing a move to another General Mills site, it's worth asking whether taking it, or turning it down, changes the severance you'd otherwise get. The St. Charles notices also gave a window, on or about a date or within two weeks of it, so if you get a notice like that, you can ask for the exact last day in writing.

The cuts haven't all been at plants. In 2021, as executives told staff that up to a fifth of the 3,000 people at the headquarters outside Minneapolis could go, chief executive Jeff Harmening wrote in a memo that the shift had "real world personal impacts" and that many colleagues would be leaving, according to Food Dive. The company put that restructuring's cost at $170 million to $220 million, about $160 million of it, primarily severance, in fiscal 2021, Food Dive reported. The 2025 transformation arrived as an 8-K filing about "targeted organizational actions," and General Mills booked $70.1 million for it in fiscal 2025, its 10-K note shows. When it approved the supply chain plan that included the Missouri closings, its October 2025 8-K put severance and other costs at $18 million, an estimate the same 10-K note later raised to $35 million.

If you worked in General Mills' U.S. yogurt business, the change came as a sale. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Reed City, Michigan, plants went to Lactalis along with Yoplait, Go-Gurt and the other brands when the deal closed, according to the company's June 30, 2025 release.

Every filing in our tracker since 2025 is from Missouri, so Missouri's layoff notices and Missouri unemployment benefits are the state pages that match them. Our WARN filings tracker finds both St. Charles notices under General Mills.
