J.B. Hunt's salaried office headcount was down about 4.5% from a year earlier in the third quarter of 2026 while its driver count rose 3.5%, finance chief Brad Delco said on the October 15 earnings call, as The Motley Fool's transcript records. He offered the pair as a sign the company was investing where demand required it.
What J.B. Hunt layoffs have meant for employees
If your J.B. Hunt job was in an office, the filings show that side of the company shrinking faster than the driver side. Its 2022 10-K counted 10,795 office personnel at the end of that year and its 2025 10-K counted 8,481, about a fifth fewer by our arithmetic, while company drivers fell by about an eighth. The $100 million cost effort executives laid out on the July 2025 earnings call had them assigned to areas that included salaries and wages and benefits, and most of its savings were expected to land in 2026 and later.
Executives described how the company got smaller. The finance chief at the time told analysts on that call that J.B. Hunt had been managing costs aggressively since the freight downturn began more than three years earlier, and that it had managed headcounts through attrition and performance management. President Shelley Simpson said on the same call that staff had known for three years there wouldn't be mass layoffs, which she tied to the company's culture, and that the aim was to move people from work that could be automated into growing the business. In October 2026, as the third-quarter transcript records, finance chief Brad Delco said the driver recruiting team was hiring close to record numbers of drivers with a team 30% smaller than at its COVID-era peak, crediting technology in part.
Simpson had made a related case at an Arkansas Trucking Association conference, telling the audience that trucking companies could come through the freight recession if they took care of their people, according to Talk Business & Politics, which put J.B. Hunt's workforce then at nearly 36,000 in North America, nearly 7,000 of them in Arkansas. If you were among the Arkansas staff, the state's rules are at Arkansas unemployment benefits.
If you drive on a dedicated account, your job is tied to one customer's contract. Dedicated Contract Services, the segment the Lithonia drivers were titled under in Georgia's WARN record, supplies equipment and drivers exclusively to one customer under a long-term contract, as that transcript's glossary defines it, and J.B. Hunt cited changing business conditions when it set the Lithonia operation at a Home Depot distribution center to close, as Trucking Dive reported from the WARN letter. In July 2025, Simpson had said the dedicated business's fleet losses were subsiding and that the company's driver turnover was among the lowest on record. If a closing notice for your account mentions transfers, as the Lithonia letter did, you can weigh which locations are on offer and whether the pay, the schedule and the home time would change.
The Jessup filing shows how a notice can read when J.B. Hunt works at another company's site. It went in under J.B. Hunt's own name, with Bob's Discount Furniture named as the place where J.B. Hunt maintained the facility, as our WARN filings tracker records it. If you worked for J.B. Hunt at someone else's site and want to know whether a notice covered your job, you can match the employer, the facility and the street address, and California's yearly WARN report and Georgia's record both carry the address.
Brokerage is where J.B. Hunt put the business it bought from BNSF Logistics. The purchase of BNSF Logistics' brokerage assets closed on September 30, 2023, according to the 10-K note on acquisitions, and the business went into Integrated Capacity Solutions, the freight brokerage segment. In July 2025 Simpson said that brokerage business still had work to do and that progress was being made to further right-size its cost structure. If you came over from BNSF Logistics in that deal or work in brokerage now, that's the business its president singled out for right-sizing.
