Laid off from KinderCare.

When a KinderCare center closes, its teachers and families lose the same building, and what comes next for a teacher depends on whether a center nearby has a classroom to offer. In 2026 KinderCare began closing centers far faster than in past years.

The most recent KinderCare layoff we've found

KinderCare said in August 2026 that its center consolidation was about two-thirds done, and CFO Tony Amandi told analysts on the second-quarter earnings call that most of the remaining closings would come in the fourth quarter.

What KinderCare layoffs have meant for employees

More than 42,000 of the roughly 43,700 people KinderCare employed as 2026 began were teachers, staff and field employees, according to its fiscal 2025 10-K, with about 1,600 on the corporate support team. For the people working in its centers, the job losses on record have come as closings, one building at a time, each with its own last day of care. In 2025 a closing was an occasional thing, 18 learning centers out of more than 1,500. In 2026 the pace changed, and the closings KinderCare's CFO expected for the year came to more than four times that count.

The centers picked had a profile. CEO Tom Wyatt told the second-quarter call that the ones closed that quarter averaged below 37% occupancy and came mostly from the bottom two of the company's five performance tiers, and a parent at the closing Delafield, Wisconsin, center told The Freeman only about half its classrooms were in use. If you work in a building with empty rooms, it's fair to ask your director how enrollment is tracking and whether the center is among the "potential centers for action" KinderCare's CFO told the first-quarter call in May the company had identified. Asking early gives you more time to weigh a transfer than a letter with a date on it would.

Wyatt's statement about moving people came with a qualifier, wherever possible, and on the same call the CFO described severance for the directors and teachers KinderCare couldn't move, which leaves open how a declined transfer is treated. Nearby is also the company's word. The same Delafield parent said the alternatives offered to families were too far out of the way for hers. If a transfer is on the table for you, you can ask which center, which room and which hours before you answer, and whether saying no would change the severance the CFO described.

On pay, the record is that sentence and a number. The second quarter's closings carried about $0.5 million of severance expense across the whole company, which says little about any one person's check. The departure terms KinderCare spelled out in its 10-K belong to an executive. When it eliminated the chief operating officer's post in March 2026, it listed six months of outplacement, a year of financial planning and a year of the employee childcare discount, all conditioned on a signed release of claims. If your own kids attend a KinderCare center on that discount, it's worth asking what happens to it after your last day.

Champions staff work on different terms. They run before- and after-school programs inside schools, under an outsourced model KinderCare sells to districts, and over the first six months of 2026 the company closed more of those sites than it opened, the reverse of a year earlier, according to its second-quarter 10-Q. At the one employer-site closing in the record, part of the account was the host's own shift. In Oregon, KinderCare's home state, its spokesperson told KOIN 6 that families at the OHSU center in Portland began using their KinderCare tuition benefits at centers closer to home once many of the university's administrative roles went remote.

Beyond the chief operating officer's post, the corporate cuts on record came with an acquisition. When KinderCare folded in Rainbow Child Care Center in 2018, it told Crain's Detroit Business that those whose jobs were cut got as much notice as possible, with staggered end dates running into the next July, and that it was supporting Rainbow employees in applying for positions with KinderCare. If you work in the support office, an acquisition announcement is worth reading closely, since the Rainbow cuts fell on the acquired company's back office.

KinderCare layoff and severance questions

What severance has KinderCare given laid-off employees?

KinderCare's CFO, Tony Amandi, said on the August 2026 earnings call that the company would provide severance at closing centers where it couldn't move a center director or a teacher. He put the quarter's severance expense at about $0.5 million, company-wide. If your center is closing, you can ask HR to put any severance amount, and anything you'd have to sign to receive it, in writing.

Is KinderCare closing more centers in 2026?

Yes. On the second-quarter 2026 call, CFO Tony Amandi said he expected the year's closings to reach 80 to 85, and CEO Tom Wyatt said the centers closed so far had averaged below 37% occupancy, mostly from the company's two lowest performance quintiles. School-age sites closed as well, and KinderCare's second-quarter 10-Q counts 67 permanent closures of them in the six months to July 4, 2026, against 42 openings.

What happens to KinderCare teachers when their center closes?

KinderCare's CEO, Tom Wyatt, told analysts on KinderCare's August 13 call that wherever possible the company helps employees transition to nearby locations, and that employee retention through the closings beat its expectations. Three months earlier, its CFO had used the first-quarter call to describe consolidating teachers into nearby centers where it makes sense. If you're offered a spot at another center, you can ask whether your hire date, pay rate and benefits carry over with the move.
