Laid off from Magic Leap.
What stands out in Magic Leap's record is how far its layoff notices moved after they went out. In 2020 it withdrew a conditional WARN notice once new money arrived. In 2026, as it turned from headsets to supplying waveguides, Florida's Plantation count rose well past the first letter.

What Magic Leap layoffs have meant for employees
If you're at Plantation, the number in July's stories isn't the number Florida carries anymore. The company's own July 31 supplement hedged its count with the words "at this time" and called it "the best information available," and Florida's list later moved past it by 77 jobs. That gap matters if you've been checking the July exhibit for your title, because the exhibit accounts for only 195 of the jobs on the state's count, so a title missing from it isn't an all-clear. The state's list keeps one row and changes the number on it, so a count you saw in the summer can look current and not be.
Who's on that July list says more than the total does. Software titles fill 108 of its positions, and the list runs from associate engineers to two senior vice presidents, with a vice president of tax and one of corporate development among them. Magic Leap named waveguide manufacturing as a focus in its statement to The XR Beat, but that didn't keep manufacturing off the list, which also names a senior vice president of manufacturing operations and several manufacturing engineers. The company's stated focus, then, isn't a list of protected jobs. Road to VR called it uncertain in July how many people would remain, with estimates of a few hundred, and Florida's count has risen since that estimate.
The 2020 filings call for the opposite caution. The 402 Plantation jobs among the 5 filings from that year on our WARN tracker look like a layoff, but South Florida Business & Wealth reported that cut was apparently no longer happening once the money came in. Pulse 2 called the notice conditional and said it went to those who remained, which makes it a warning to the people who stayed. So the Plantation filing doesn't measure that year's layoffs, and Bloomberg's count of about 1,000 is a separate number. If you're piecing together Magic Leap's history for a reference or a job search, a 2020 row at Plantation isn't proof that a job ended. The July 2026 letters use firmer language, calling the layoffs expected to be permanent.
The 2020 and 2024 reporting is more specific about which teams were hit. In April 2020, as Magic Leap said it was shutting its consumer business, an anonymous employee told Cartoon Brew that both content studios, Magic Leap Studios in Florida and Weta Gameshop in New Zealand, had been effectively liquidated. In July 2024 it was the sales and marketing departments, after staff had reportedly been told the company would license its optics, and one insider said the layoff came "out of left field," Road to VR wrote. The 2026 exhibit, filed as the company shifted from building its own headsets to supplying waveguides, is a broader mix of titles, and since a title doesn't show which product someone worked on, it can't tell you which work the company chose to drop.
If you're covered by the Plantation letters, your pay and benefits run through a notice period of at least 60 days. If your employer coverage ends with that period, the way COBRA works is worth knowing before you compare other plans. If separation paperwork includes a non-disclosure clause, the 2024 report of that condition is a reason to price the clause along with the money, and we cover what moves in a severance agreement. Florida claim rules and California claim rules cover the two sites with 2026 notices. If you're covered by those letters, a dated note of what the Magic Leap People Team, their named contact, tells you about your last day gives you something to point to should that date move.

What to do if you're laid off from Magic Leap
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Magic Leap's biggest hubs: Florida, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Magic Leap's hub states run: Florida, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Magic Leap layoff and severance questions
How many people did Magic Leap lay off in 2026?
State notices add up to 353 jobs, with 272 on Florida's 2026 WARN list for Plantation and 76 plus 5 for Sunnyvale in California's WARN report. Those are notice counts, so they show the cuts Magic Leap told the states about, not a confirmed total of people gone.
What severance has Magic Leap given laid-off employees?
In July 2024 an insider said laid-off staff would get two months of severance, as Road to VR relayed, and Verdict said it was conditioned on signing non-disclosure agreements. For 2026, the Florida letters promise full pay and benefits during the notice period, which is notice pay, and neither mentions severance. If Magic Leap offers you a package, that 2024 report is a past term from a past round and doesn't set yours.
Why did Magic Leap withdraw its WARN notice in 2020?
The withdrawal came in the same May 2020 staff email that announced $350 million in funding, Pulse 2 reported, and it pulled the conditional notice that had gone to remaining employees on April 22. South Florida Business & Wealth said Magic Leap had warned the state it would lay off 402 employees and that this was apparently no longer happening after the raise.
Why is Magic Leap cutting jobs in 2026?
Magic Leap told The XR Beat it had sharpened its focus on waveguide manufacturing and device integration and was making organizational changes to align with that direction. Road to VR placed the layoffs amid the company's shift from building first-party headsets to supplying waveguides to other companies.
Who owns Magic Leap?
Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund was a majority holder with over $1 billion invested as of July 2026, Road to VR wrote. Its Public Investment Fund became majority stakeholder in late 2022 after injecting $450 million, Road to VR's 2024 report said.
How many WARN notices has Magic Leap filed?
Magic Leap has 8 filings in all on our WARN tracker, with 3 filings covering 274 jobs since the start of 2025. That 274 uses the first Plantation count, which Florida's 2026 list has since raised. The other 5 date from 2020, including the Plantation filing tied to the notice Magic Leap withdrew, South Florida Business & Wealth reported.
