Laid off from Netflix.
Netflix explained its October 2026 layoffs differently from the May and June rounds of 2022. Then, spokespeople tied those cuts to slowing revenue growth; this time the co-CEOs' memo called the business strong and growing and described the cuts as choices about priorities.

The most recent Netflix layoff we've found
On October 14, 2026, Netflix's co-CEOs told staff that supporting the people leaving was their top priority, that leaders would be in touch with those affected soon and that the process would vary somewhat by country, in a memo Deadline printed in full.
What Netflix layoffs have meant for employees
If an interviewer asks about your exit from Netflix, the company has explained its cuts publicly more than once. When it let around 150 employees go in 2022, a spokesperson said the changes were "primarily driven by business needs rather than individual performance," Fox's Los Angeles station reported, and Variety's March report quoted sources saying the product-team layoffs weren't performance-based. The October memo, as Variety printed it, presented the newest cuts as the result of "a number of organizational changes." Those are lines you can repeat as they stand, and explaining a layoff has tips for that conversation.
The memo named product, tech, legal and HR as the teams taking the greatest impact. Cuts also reached TV executives at director and manager levels and executives in the film division, TheWrap reported, with the affected TV staff notified by that Wednesday afternoon. If your team wasn't on the memo's list, those cuts show the list marked where the impact was greatest, and the layoffs reached past it. Smaller cuts have come between the big rounds, as Variety noted in October. The product-team reorganization it covered in March moved some people into other Netflix jobs instead of letting them go, and Game Developer reported in October 2024 that Netflix had shut Team Blue, its Southern California AAA game studio, after less than two years, in a closure that reportedly came amid Netflix layoffs affecting 35 people. If a move inside Netflix and a package are both on the table, setting the new team, the pay and how long the role is expected to last beside the package is one way to weigh them.
The memo's confident tone followed a more guarded remark earlier in October, when co-CEO Ted Sarandos told a Bloomberg conference, "Overall, we're not growing as fast as I want us to, and we're working on making that move faster," Deadline reported. The memo also said exits would be handled somewhat differently from country to country, so for anyone at Netflix outside the U.S., a colleague's account from another country may not match the steps they're given.
The four-month starting point reported for 2022's packages came from a round four years before October's, and amounts then depended on position and seniority. If you're offered a package in the 2026 cuts, that figure is a point of comparison rather than a promise. The October memo, in the copy Deadline printed, promised those leaving "as much clarity and context as possible," which is a fair standard for any explanation of the terms. There's more on weighing a severance offer if you're deciding whether to push for more.
Netflix's mid-2026 quarterly filing describes its options as generally vested in full at grant and exercisable for their full term regardless of employment status. That description covers the plan rather than any particular award. If you hold options, comparing the expiration dates and exercise terms in your own award documents with that general description, before any deadline you're given, can show whether your grants follow it.
Of the four Netflix notices our WARN tracker matches, two came from cities where Netflix ran customer-service call centers. Netflix came to Salt Lake City in 2014 and saw it as a place to experiment with running its own call center, according to a 2020 piece by its customer-service staff that Utah Business carried, and the largest of the four notices, dated October 2018, was filed there under the name NetflixCS. By 2020 that office was moving from call-center work toward production support, consumer claims and compliance. In Hillsboro, Oregon, the call center for DVD customers was set to move to California, Oregon Business reported. The Netflix notices our tracker matches since 2018 are from Utah and California, and there's more on unemployment claims in Utah and California.

Netflix told staff on October 14 it would let go of roughly 6% of its colleagues, about 1,000 people by Variety's count, with product, tech, legal and HR teams taking the greatest impact.
February 2026, Netflix cuts in its global product team

May 2022, Netflix lays off about 150 employees
In May, Netflix let around 150 employees go, mostly in the U.S., plus dozens of contractors and part-time staffers, as LA Magazine recounted, and Fox's Los Angeles station reported packages for them expected to start at four months.

Netflix said it was closing its Hillsboro, Oregon DVD call center, where nearly 200 full-time employees worked, and moving the work to Fremont, California, as its DVD business declined, according to Oregon Business; a Hillsboro closure notice of 2015 in our WARN tracker counted 68 jobs.
What to do if you're laid off from Netflix
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Netflix's biggest hubs: California, Utah. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Netflix's hub states run: California, Utah, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Netflix layoff and severance questions
Is Netflix laying off employees in 2026?
Yes. On October 14, 2026, Netflix began eliminating about 6% of its global staff, some 1,000 jobs, its biggest round of cuts in four years by Deadline's account, which also counted February's product-division cuts of several dozen people among the most notable since 2022. Our WARN tracker matches one Netflix notice dated 2026, an August filing for Los Angeles.
What severance has Netflix given laid-off employees?
For the round of about 150 employees in May 2022 that LA Magazine described, Fox's Los Angeles station reported that those affected were expected to receive severance packages beginning at four months, with amounts depending on position and seniority. For the October 2026 cuts, the co-CEOs' memo, which Deadline printed in full, called supporting those leaving the top priority but gave no amount or formula.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Netflix?
Netflix's 10-Q covering the quarter through June 30, 2026 says its stock options are generally vested in full on the grant date and exercisable for the full ten-year contractual term regardless of employment status. That's a general description, and the filing mentions restricted stock units only for certain executive officers, vesting quarterly over three years subject to continued employment or service. If you hold Netflix equity, the exercise terms written into your own grants take precedence over any summary.
