Laid off from Philip Morris International.
A Philip Morris International layoff in 2026 could come with a second question attached, whether to follow the job to another state. Many office staff in Richmond and Owensboro were offered moves, while in Dothan the cigar work itself was headed for the Dominican Republic.

What Philip Morris International layoffs have meant for employees
A relocation offer can keep a paycheck and a career going, and it can also mean selling a house, changing schools or leaving a partner's job behind. That's the trade PMI put in front of many of its Richmond and Owensboro office staff in 2026, going by the company statements Virginia Business and the Messenger-Inquirer reported, and it's a rotten one to weigh on someone else's schedule. If you're offered relocation, it's worth asking for the role, pay, title and start date in writing, whether moving costs are covered, and whether saying no still leaves you eligible for severance. A job that moves can change shape on the way, so asking who you'd report to and what you'd be measured on can tell you more than the title does.
PMI was hiring while it cut. Its March 2026 release on the Tampa center names jobs in finance, data engineering and analytics, information technology, project management, sales enablement, talent acquisition and people operations, and the Stamford teams handle legal, marketing, communications, human resources, commercial operations, strategy, technology and analytics, the company told the Hartford Business Journal in September. If your old job sits in one of those functions and you turned a move down or weren't offered one, you can ask a PMI recruiter whether former Swedish Match and PMI staff can apply. If you've already signed a separation agreement, consider asking too whether taking a new PMI job would change what you're owed under it.
Dothan was a different kind of loss. Under the program described in PMI's second-quarter 10-Q, the plant's cigar production was being consolidated into PMI's manufacturing in the Dominican Republic, so the work itself was leaving the country rather than moving to an office hub. PMI U.S. said the shutdown would happen gradually over the following months, WDHN reported, and a date on a state notice isn't always the day a given person goes. If you're at the plant, it's worth asking HR for your own last day in writing, along with what changes if that date moves.
Who sat at the table when terms were set has varied from one PMI change to the next. The German plant closings went through consultations with employee representatives, and the Owensboro ZYN schedule change ran under a union contract, with the company giving about 10 weeks' notice where the contract asked for less, Nicotine Insider reported. The Richmond letter said none of the office staff there had a union. If you've been offered terms and you're negotiating on your own, it can help to ask HR whether those terms match everyone else's in your group, and to get any change you agree to in writing.
The filings put a price on the US reorganization without telling anyone what their own share looks like. By that same 10-Q, PMI booked $25 million of separation and related employee costs in the first half of 2026 and expected about $50 million in program charges for the year. Those are program-wide charges, not per-person severance amounts, so they can't say whether one package is generous. If you've been offered one, comparing notes with a coworker in a similar role and tenure can tell you more than any company-wide number.
PMI's two 2026 state filings went in under the names Swedish Match Cigars in Alabama and PMI-U.S. Corporate Services in Virginia, so if you're looking for your site in our tracker, you can search under those names and then match the city and date. If you worked in Richmond, Virginia's layoff notices and Virginia unemployment benefits cover the state side. Alabama has the same pair in Alabama layoff notices and Alabama unemployment benefits, and anyone filing from Owensboro can start with Kentucky unemployment benefits.

January 2026, 48 back-office roles in Owensboro, Kentucky

January 2026, Richmond office closing, 135 jobs
Swedish Match North America's president told Virginia the downtown office would close, with layoffs from April 17 hitting staff of five PMI subsidiaries and affiliates, Virginia Business reported. PMI said most of the Richmond staff were being offered a chance to relocate.
October 2024, Berlin and Dresden cigarette plants
Two German subsidiaries opened talks with employee representatives on ending production at both plants by mid-2025 as cigarette demand fell in Europe, per PMI's second-quarter 2026 10-Q. The talks ended in April 2025, with $127 million booked for pension and separation costs.
July 2022, Manhattan headquarters exit

What to do if you're laid off from Philip Morris International
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Philip Morris International's biggest hubs: Virginia, Alabama. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Philip Morris International's hub states run: Virginia, Alabama, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Philip Morris International layoff and severance questions
What severance has Philip Morris International given laid-off employees?
When PMI U.S. announced in March 2026 that its Dothan cigar factory would close, it said workers there would get severance, extended salary continuation, a stretch of company-paid health insurance and outplacement services, WDHN reported. Owensboro back-office staff cut that January were offered relocation or severance, per the Messenger-Inquirer. None of that reporting gives an amount or a formula, so if a package has been put in front of you, you can ask HR how it was figured and when the paid health coverage stops.
Is Philip Morris International the same company as Philip Morris USA?
No. Philip Morris International split from Altria, which owns Philip Morris USA, in 2008, Crain's New York Business reported, and in the US the Marlboro trademark belongs to Altria and PMI sells no cigarettes here, per the Hartford Business Journal. If your paycheck came from Philip Morris USA or Altria, PMI's cuts and filings are another employer's.
Is Philip Morris International laying off ZYN workers in Owensboro?
In April 2026 PMI told union officials at its Owensboro, Kentucky plant that the ZYN Flagship department would drop from round-the-clock production to five days a week from July 6, because output was exceeding demand, Nicotine Insider reported. The company called it a schedule adjustment and said it would work with the union on job assignments and seniority, and the reporting we track puts no layoff count on it. If you're in that department, you can ask your union representative how schedules, assignments and seniority are being handled.
Why did Philip Morris International close its Richmond office?
PMI said it was gathering key functions into strategic location hubs to grow its smoke-free business, Virginia Business reported. Its second-quarter 2026 10-Q ties the closing to a US program that shifts roles mainly to a new business solutions center in Tampa, Florida, and the headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, and that also takes in the Dothan cigar plant's closing.
How many WARN notices has Philip Morris International filed?
Our tracker holds 2 filings for PMI, both from 2026, a January 28 Virginia notice for 135 Richmond jobs under PMI-U.S. Corporate Services and an April 1 Alabama notice for 54 Dothan jobs under Swedish Match Cigars. PMI also told New York in 2022 that 13 Manhattan headquarters jobs would end, Crain's New York Business reported.
