Laid off from Sanmina.
Plant closures run through Sanmina's layoff record, and its filings have tied cuts to slack demand and high-cost regions. Its December 2001 purchase of SCI Systems came with a restructuring that planned thousands of job cuts, months after a separate plan to close plants in an industry slowdown.

What Sanmina layoffs have meant for employees
Sanmina's WARN filings in our WARN tracker cluster in Texas between 2001 and 2004, while the company's 2002 annual report lists plants closed or closing that September in New Hampshire, Colorado, Minnesota, North Carolina, California and Maine as well. The Texas filings show one corner of a contraction that, by the company's own count, reached facilities across North America. Carrollton's Texas filings came in repeated rounds from 2001 to 2004, at a plant that same list didn't mark as closed or closing. The single biggest filing is older than the merger itself, SCI Systems' March 2001 closing filing for Arab, Alabama, which counts as Sanmina's in our tracker because SCI became part of Sanmina that December. For anyone who worked at those plants outside Texas, that 2002 list records each closing.
In that same report, the company said it had shut facilities "not required to satisfy current demand levels" while keeping "strategic manufacturing facilities in the United States and Western Europe" and planning to expand in lower-cost locations such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, China and Southeast Asia. In January 2005, Sanmina-SCI described an added charge, in an 8-K, as cutting capacity in high-cost regions while leaning on "more cost-efficient regions." If you're at a US plant, those are the company's own words for how it judged its sites in those years, and they're worth knowing before you consider a move to another Sanmina location.
Owego's closing in New York is documented down to its phases, and it shows how that shutdown unfolded for the people in it. Temporary workers went first, and NY1 reported that 50 of them were let go the morning the plan reached county leaders. The permanent layoffs then came in waves, and the dates moved, with the amended notice CNY Business Journal described pushing 28 layoffs from March to late April. Help moved quickly too. The Tioga Career Center held a job fair for Sanmina's workers a week after the announcement, and 32 companies came, some of which filled every opening with Sanmina people, the center's manager said. By March, dozens of the plant's workers had found jobs, many with other manufacturers. If you're named in a Sanmina closing notice, it's worth keeping every version, since the one that applies to you can change.
Severance shows up in Sanmina's filings as part of plan totals, and the company's fiscal 2020 10-K puts restructuring costs, including exit costs beyond severance, at $29 million in fiscal 2018, $14 million in fiscal 2019 and $27 million in fiscal 2020. If you're offered a package, any plan document behind the package is worth reading line by line, including anything it says about years of service. Service runs long at Sanmina, about eight years on average by the count in its fiscal 2025 10-K, with about 30% of employees past ten.
ZT Systems' New Jersey and Texas plants came to Sanmina when the purchase closed in October 2025, according to Sanmina's closing release, under a purchase agreement that has Sanmina keep continuing ZT employees' pay and benefits at least as good overall as before for a year after closing. The agreement also commits Sanmina to "commercially reasonable efforts" to have its plans count each person's earlier ZT service. For anyone who came over from ZT, the original ZT start date is worth keeping on file, since that service is what the agreement asks Sanmina's plans to recognize.

What to do if you're laid off from Sanmina
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Sanmina's biggest hubs: Texas, Alabama. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Sanmina's hub states run: Texas, Alabama, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Sanmina layoff and severance questions
What severance has Sanmina given laid-off employees?
Sanmina's filings count severance by plan, covering thousands of employees in its 2018 and 2019 plans, according to the fiscal 2020 10-K, and no per-person formula appears in the filings or press we track. The 2018 plan paired severance with retention pay, its January 2018 8-K said, so if you're asked to stay until a site closes and offered severance, the retention terms are worth reading as closely as the severance terms.
How does severance work for ZT Systems workers after Sanmina's purchase?
For a year after the deal closed, the purchase agreement requires Sanmina to give continuing ZT employees severance eligibility no less favorable than similarly situated Sanmina employees get. The same section says it doesn't create third party rights for current or former employees. If you came over from ZT, Sanmina's severance terms for comparable roles are the yardstick that clause uses.
How many WARN notices has Sanmina filed?
Twenty-three Sanmina and SCI Systems filings appear in our WARN tracker, dated 2001 through 2014, with none since the start of 2025. Notices from states and years our archives don't reach aren't in that count, among them the amended New York notice for Owego that CNY Business Journal covered in 2018.
Which Sanmina plants have closed?
By September 2002, according to its fiscal 2002 10-K, Sanmina-SCI had closed or was closing plants in Arab, Alabama; Austin, San Antonio, Von Ormy, El Paso and Eagle Pass, Texas; Colorado Springs and Longmont, Colorado; four New Hampshire towns; and sites in California, Maine, Minnesota and North Carolina. Later closings include Fountain, Colorado, which Circuits Assembly reported in 2007, and Owego, New York, which NY1 reported in 2017.
