Laid off from Select Medical.
As 2025 ended, most of Select Medical's critical illness recovery hospitals operated inside or beside another hospital. Longview's host didn't renew Select's lease, and Sanford needed its Sioux Falls space, so Select moved to close both and said staff could pursue or be considered for roles in its network.

The most recent Select Medical layoff we've found
In July 2026, according to the Tucson Sentinel, Select informed staff and state officials that it would close Select Specialty Hospital-Tucson East, a 28-bed facility on the Tucson Medical Center campus, which it said would be permanently closed by September. A Select spokeswoman told the paper the company was working to relocate Tucson East employees to its Tucson Northwest hospital, Banner Rehabilitation Hospital-Tucson and facilities near Phoenix to avoid job losses.
What Select Medical layoffs have meant for employees
A hospital within a hospital, as Select's 2025 annual report describes the arrangement, is separately licensed but typically rents its space from a general acute care hospital and sits inside it or on its campus. The host's plans came first in Sioux Falls and Longview, as SiouxFalls.Business and the Longview News-Journal described, and in Warren, Ohio, where The Vindicator reported that Select shut its unit in 2024 because the host hospital said it was closing, a closing that never came. That year Mercy Health also decided not to renew Select's lease at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, the paper reported, with clinical staff there to transfer to Select's Boardman hospital. If your unit sits in a host hospital, the host's plans for its space and its own future bear on your job too.
In Longview, Sioux Falls and Warren, Select pointed staff to jobs elsewhere in its own network, those same reports show, and how far that reached turned on what Select ran nearby. Warren had other Select hospitals in the same market, while in Sioux Falls Select was leaving the market altogether, so pursuing a hospital role elsewhere in its network could have required a move. That's where the host can matter a second time. Select said it was working with Sanford to guide affected Sioux Falls staff toward roles in Sanford's own system, and if your unit sits inside a larger hospital, that hospital is another employer to set beside a transfer. If Select offers you one, the distance, the shifts and whether your pay carries over are what separate a real option from a long commute.
The merger agreement behind Select's take-private set terms for the year after the closing. Employees working in the U.S. who stayed on were to get, for as long as a year after the closing, base pay and target cash incentive opportunities no less favorable than just before it. They were also to get credit for their Select service for vesting and eligibility under the buyer's benefit plans, except for eligibility under defined benefit pension plans or where it would duplicate benefits. The same section says nothing in the agreement guarantees anyone a job for any period or requires Select to keep a benefit plan, and it calls those terms "solely for the benefit of the parties" and says no employee counts as a third-party beneficiary. If you were on Select's staff at the closing and it ends your job inside that year, the plans in force on the closing date are the ones the agreement's severance promise points to.
Select's annual report shows the company adding and shedding facilities in the same years, buying and opening hospitals and clinics while it closed or sold some critical illness recovery hospitals and dozens of outpatient clinics. That churn across the network doesn't by itself show what kind of nearby role a worker at a closing unit could pursue. If your unit is closing, what counts more than the company's totals is whether a Select hospital or clinic, or a job with the host, sits within reach of your home and your shifts.
For the states behind Select's 2025 and 2026 notices, and for Texas, home to 10 of its filings in our WARN tracker, Texas unemployment benefits, Arizona unemployment benefits, Mississippi unemployment benefits and South Dakota unemployment benefits carry the rules for a claim in each. Select had operations in 38 states and the District of Columbia as of March 31, 2026, according to Select's June 30 release, and unemployment benefits by state covers the rest.

What to do if you're laid off from Select Medical
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Select Medical's biggest hubs: Texas, Arizona, Mississippi, South Dakota. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Select Medical's hub states run: Texas, Arizona, Mississippi, South Dakota, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Select Medical layoff and severance questions
What severance has Select Medical given laid-off employees?
No severance amount appears in Becker's Hospital Review's report on the Tucson East notice or in the Longview News-Journal and SiouxFalls.Business accounts of the Longview and Sioux Falls closings. Select's March 2026 merger agreement has the buyer pay employees still with Select after the take-private closed, if they're terminated within a year of the closing, severance equal to what their employment agreement or Select's benefit plans in effect at the closing provided. The same agreement says it doesn't guarantee anyone's job and makes no employee a third-party beneficiary.
When did Select Medical go private?
Select's acquisition by a group led by co-founder and executive chairman Robert Ortenzio, senior executive Martin Jackson and the private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe became effective July 1, 2026, under a March 2026 agreement, with its stock to stop trading on the New York Stock Exchange that day, the company said in a June 30 release announcing the deal's completion. The release said its officers, including Ortenzio and Jackson, would keep running the business.
How many WARN notices has Select Medical filed?
Twenty-three filings dated 2007 through 2026 count toward Select in our WARN tracker, 10 of them from Texas. Twenty carry the Select Medical or Select Specialty Hospital name and three only a Regency Hospital name, a name the Meridian Star tied to Select as operator of Regency Hospitals. The three filed in 2025 and 2026, in Arizona, Mississippi and South Dakota, covered 291 jobs.
Is Concentra part of Select Medical?
Not since Nov. 25, 2024, when Select distributed its Concentra shares to its stockholders, after which, per its 2025 annual report, it owned none. Concentra's own WARN notices aren't counted as Select's in our WARN tracker.
