Laid off from Shaw Industries.
Several of Shaw's layoff announcements since 2020 invited the people losing their jobs to apply at other Shaw sites, from Dalton to Aiken. Whether that works depends on the drive, the shift and the pay at the other end, and weighing it while a plant winds down is hard.

What Shaw Industries layoffs have meant for employees
Shaw has described several of its recent cuts as consolidation, with work leaving a building rather than the company. It said it was ending Plant 6's residential fiber work to make fuller use of facilities with more modern capabilities, according to FloorDaily's Plant 6 report, and the Irmo layoffs were announced while a $500 million expansion at Aiken neared completion. Shaw's challenging period came partly from consumers moving away from carpet and partly from its own execution, which slipped as it expanded hard-surface production, Berkshire Hathaway said in its 2025 annual report, adding that Shaw was rebuilding its manufacturing organization. That's the owner's view. From inside a plant that's winding down, it's a hard thing to sit through.
How much an invitation to apply is worth depends on where the plant sits. Shaw counted about 35 of its manufacturing, distribution and office sites in Dalton in 2024, so a closing there can leave other Shaw work within reach. When it announced Plant 23's closing in 2020, its communications chief told the Dalton Daily Citizen the plant would fully close in May as associates found other positions, so the job hunt and the shutdown were set to run side by side. Decatur was a different case. The nearest Shaw plant was 45 minutes away in Dalton, Fox Chattanooga noted, a drive that adds gas money for people whose plant had been Meigs County's largest private employer. If you're weighing a job at another Shaw plant, it can help to work out the drive and the shift, and to ask whether your pay rate and seniority would come with you, before you answer.
Shaw's announcement and Georgia's notice put different counts on Plant 6, and the Irmo layoffs were set to leave part of that plant running. For one plant, the state's notice is the document that ties a count to a date. The West Coast closing spanned two states, per FloorDaily's West Coast report, and California's notice in our WARN tracker covered the Santa Fe Springs plant alone. The Decatur workers weren't under a union contract, Tennessee's memo notes. A notice's first separation date is the earliest one scheduled at the site and may not be yours, so if your own job is on a notice, it can help to set that date beside any separation date you're given in writing.
Shaw's filings in the tracker also show its cuts arriving in bunches. Ten are dated 2008 and 2009, when WALB reported that demand for flooring had plummeted with the housing industry, and five more are dated 2015 and 2016. If you're deciding whether to ride out a slow stretch at Shaw, that history is part of the picture.
State agencies have been part of Shaw's recent closings, too. Shaw organized career fairs with South Carolina's workforce agency for the Irmo layoffs, and Tennessee's memo shows a rapid response team was told to coordinate services for Decatur, so if your plant's closing comes with sessions like those, they're worth showing up for. A temporary shutdown is a different event from a closing. In the 2020 shutdowns, Shaw expected its operations to ramp back up with demand, and its president's message in Floor Covering News said associates who had a confirmed COVID-19 case or were placed in quarantine would get up to 14 calendar days of paid leave. If a temporary shutdown reaches your plant, it's worth asking whether Shaw is filing the unemployment claim this time or whether that's on you, and Georgia's unemployment benefits and South Carolina's set out how the state side works.

What to do if you're laid off from Shaw Industries
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Shaw Industries's biggest hubs: Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Shaw Industries's hub states run: Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Shaw Industries layoff and severance questions
What severance has Shaw Industries given laid-off employees?
In 2009, WALB reported that employees at Shaw's closing Valdosta, Georgia plant would get sixty days of severance pay. In 2019, an unnamed worker gave SC Biz News an unverified account that staff at the closing Central, South Carolina plant were told their pay would run through the end of June even if the plant shut sooner. If severance comes with your own notice, it's worth asking whether applying for another Shaw job would change it.
