Laid off from UPMC.
UPMC said its April 2024 and June 2026 cuts fell mostly outside clinical work, though a union for its nurses says the earlier round cost clinicians. At hospitals it closed, Lancaster's notice invited staff to apply for other UPMC openings, and UPMC said most willing, qualified Braddock staff had transferred.

- 505 employees on UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster's closure notice, effective March 1, 2019
- 154 employees on UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury Hospital's closure notice, effective March 31, 2020
- More than 82 percent of willing, qualified Braddock staff transferred within UPMC

The most recent UPMC layoff we've found
UPMC took ownership of CommonSpirit's Trinity Health System, including its hospitals in Steubenville, Dennison and St. Clairsville, Ohio, as of October 1, 2026, UPMC said in a September 30 release.
What UPMC layoffs have meant for employees
UPMC's November 2024 and June 2026 rounds counted jobs nobody was doing alongside people who were, so each announced total ran ahead of the number of people let go, by UPMC's own figures to WESA and Becker's. In both rounds the people were the smaller share of the total. April 2024's cuts also included attrition and closed open positions, by Healthcare Dive's account. UPMC's June 2026 statement described the reductions as falling primarily outside clinical and member-facing roles. Losses haven't been the only backdrop. The 2024 rounds followed an operating loss for 2023, and June 2026's came after a year of operating income, with UPMC's spokesperson calling it part of regularly reassessing its services.
At Lancaster, a move to another UPMC hospital had to be won. When UPMC Pinnacle moved to close that hospital, the notice said employees didn't have "bumping rights into occupied positions," and, as CPBJ reported, no one would move to another hospital without applying. At Braddock, UPMC's February 2010 release reported transfers only among staff it called willing and qualified, a narrower group than everyone who worked there. Sunbury's notice, on Pennsylvania's January 2020 list, took in the outpatient practices around that hospital as well as its main campus. If your UPMC hospital or unit is closing, the openings posted at other UPMC sites are worth watching early, starting with the ones within commuting distance.
Lancaster's staff were heading both ways as their hospital closed, some toward placements in other UPMC Pinnacle jobs and some onto severance, as CBS21 reported. If you're weighing a transfer and a severance offer at the same time, setting the new post's commute, shift and pay against the package's dollars and whatever benefits coverage comes with it puts the trade in plain numbers. UPMC's 2024 and 2026 statements paired its severance with benefits coverage, and if severance and benefits coverage both come with your layoff, how long the coverage runs is worth setting beside a new job's start date and the day any health plan there begins.
UPMC has also handed work to an outside company and arranged job offers there for the people doing it. When transcription moved to Nuance in 2013, UPMC said voice recognition had shrunk the need for transcriptionists and pitched the Nuance jobs as longer-term employment, and the deal, as WESA reported, kept the old hourly rate for three months before pay switched to a rate per line, four or eight cents depending on how complex the work was. Paid by the line, earnings came to depend on speed instead of hours. If an outside company offers you a job taking over your UPMC work, working out what its pay comes to at your usual pace once any guarantee period ends gives a truer comparison than the first paychecks do.
As of UPMC's September 2026 count, its hospitals and outpatient sites were in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and, with the Trinity deal, Ohio. If your UPMC job is or was based in one of those states, the claim process sits under Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland or Ohio, and for a job based anywhere else, every state's unemployment rules are gathered in one place. If your layoff comes with a severance agreement, severance agreements and negotiation covers the ground when you want it, and if UPMC gives you a written notice, it's worth putting its dates on your calendar early.
A sourced history of UPMC layoffs
June 2026, 200 layoffs and 300 vacant positions confirmed
The reductions fell primarily on people outside clinical or member-facing roles, with enhanced severance pay and benefits coverage for those affected, a spokesperson told Becker's on June 9.
November 2024, 100 layoffs and 200 vacancies set to go
UPMC confirmed the plans to WESA, calling them targeted adjustments to improve efficiency and eliminate redundancies that could reach anywhere in its 100,000-person system.
April 2024, about 1,000 jobs cut across the system
UPMC told Healthcare Dive the reductions fell primarily on nonclinical and administrative functions and came partly through attrition and closed open positions, blaming a still-evolving post-pandemic marketplace. They included insurance services jobs, WESA reported, and UPMC promised enhanced severance pay plus benefits coverage.
2020, UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury Hospital closing
The hospital's closure notice on Pennsylvania's January 2020 WARN list covered 154 affected employees at its main campus and outpatient practices in Sunbury, effective March 31, 2020.
2019, UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster hospital closing
Pennsylvania's January 2019 WARN list shows the closure notice covering 505 employees, with layoffs effective March 1, 2019. Nearly 70% would be placed in UPMC Pinnacle jobs and about 25 percent took severance, UPMC Pinnacle's chief executive said in remarks CBS21 carried.
July 2013, transcription outsourced to Nuance
UPMC arranged for Nuance to offer jobs to the roughly 130 transcriptionists whose work it outsourced, and one with more than 20 years at UPMC said, in an unverified account to WESA, that her new per-line wages were roughly a third of her old pay.
January 2010, UPMC Braddock hospital closes
UPMC had announced the closing for January 31, 2010, NPR reported in October 2009, when the hospital employed 670 people. UPMC's February 2010 release said more than 82 percent of the willing and qualified staff had since moved to other UPMC facilities.
2008, hundreds laid off in the financial crisis
A much smaller UPMC laid off hundreds of employees during the 2008 financial crisis, WESA reported in 2024, calling that round its last system-wide reductions before 2024's cuts.
What to do if you're laid off from UPMC
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. UPMC's biggest hubs: Pennsylvania. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what UPMC's hub states run: Pennsylvania, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
UPMC layoff and severance questions
What severance has UPMC given laid-off employees?
UPMC said in April 2024 that it would offer enhanced severance pay along with benefits coverage, Healthcare Dive reported, and its spokesperson told Becker's in June 2026 that UPMC was providing both. When UPMC Pinnacle was closing its Lancaster hospital in 2019, CBS21 quoted its chief executive saying about 25 percent of affected employees had accepted a generous severance offer.
Has UPMC filed WARN notices for its layoffs?
Pennsylvania's monthly WARN lists carry UPMC closure notices covering 505 employees at UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster and six at UPMC Pinnacle's bariatric institute in Lititz on the January 2019 list, and 154 at UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury Hospital on the January 2020 list. UPMC has no filing at all in our WARN tracker, whose Pennsylvania records begin in 2023, so none of its system-wide cuts shows up there.
Did UPMC lay off nurses?
UPMC's statements and the union's don't say whether nurses were among those laid off. UPMC described its April 2024 cuts to Healthcare Dive as primarily nonclinical and administrative, and Becker's reported that no union-represented employees were laid off in June 2026. SEIU Healthcare PA, which represents more than 2,000 UPMC workers in nursing and other roles, said of UPMC's previous round that "we lost many experienced and valued clinicians with roles in direct patient care and nurse education."
Has UPMC Health Plan had layoffs?
UPMC's April 2024 cuts included positions in insurance services as well as in the health care system and other business units, WESA reported. That places cuts somewhere in UPMC's insurance business, which UPMC's September 2026 release calls UPMC Insurance Services, but the report doesn't name the unit or give a count for UPMC Health Plan.
